Sony (NYSE: SNE) launched a slimmer version of the PlayStation 3 and has slashed the price of all console models, heating up competition with rivals Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) and Nintendo.
Sony introduced the PS3 Slim Tuesday at the GamesCom conference in Germany. The new model, scheduled for release in the first week of September, has the same features as the older versions, but takes up 33% less space and consumes 34% less power, according to Sony.

In launching the console, Sony also announced that the price of the two current PS3 models would be lowered by $100. Starting Tuesday, the 80 GB model was available on Amazon for the lower price of $300, and the 160 GB version for $400.
The PS3 Slim, which has a 120 GB hard drive, was available online for pre-order as of Tuesday on Amazon[$299], Sears and Kmart. Sears and Kmart listed the release date as Sept. 1.

How much does anyone think I could get for my 60 GB (backwords compatible, 4 USB slots, SD card slots... version) PS3? I'd would definitely like to slim down.

I wouldn't get rid of your 60gig bro. They are a bit rare.

It would be real tough to get an estimate on that right now because of the price drop; also, lots of rumors about BC coming for all PS3s in an update - your hardcore gamer, looking for backwards compatibility probably has heard that too.

Total estimate - but if you were to sell it on Ebay - maybe $225; less if you use Craigslist. Again though, it all depends on how much people still value the ability to play PS2 games on their PS3.

I'm thinking a lot more that $225. Last I heard they were selling for over $500. I definiteky wouldn't bet on a BC firmware update. That's been rumored for over a year.

Twigg is telling it right. I wouldn't part with my 60g simply because it has the card slots. Gonna talk the wife into me get the slim, less power to run and heat-wise less in my den. She likes to download movies and do the SD card slots, etc., so we compromised.

But I do understand the money part...if you need it. But I don't think you will save much space in your dorm room.....it's slimmer but the footprint isn't much smaller than the other models. And if the 60g still works, why bother unless you need the extra disk space. If that's the case, take it down and have a tech put a large hard drive in it. Save your system files if do, lol.

Whoa, I was way off. Still not close to $500, but $335 is way better than I thought.

I think the $500 fiigure you were referencing is still the price at many outlets nationwide for the "collectible" model, the first consoles off production, which it is now being referred to.

Hmmmmm, $335 off eBay, depending on which model and condition. Collectible model or not? New or used?

Most locations are still selling the 60g collectible priced from a low of $469 to a high of $675 at [ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0009VXAM0/ref=dp_olp_collectible?ie=UTF8&condition=collectible]Amazon.com[/ame]....and that is used in good to very good condition.

Shown below is a new 60g for $499 at Game Electronics on sale at $450. Shopping around might get you lower price.

Like my PS2, I'm moving my 60g to the living room where it can retire. The new slim, 34% less power consumption and a lot quieter, will be the workhorse starting Sept. 1. I'm not a Linuz user, so the restriction on the OS system doesn't bother me.

Not busting balls, but the Slim size is going to be on the same level size wise as the 360 now? When it comes down another 50 bucks ill definitely buy. Or when MAG comes out, whichever comes first.

Like I mentioned earlier, the footprint of the Slim isn't much smaller than my PS3, or as you mentioned, the 360. The XBox 360 measures 12.5" (W) x 3.25" (H) x 10.25" (D).

They trimmed about 1-1 3/4" depending on which model you're comparing it to.
Slim measures 11.42” (W) x 2.56 (H) x 11.42” (D)

The PS3 measures 12.8"(W) x 3.8"(H) x 10.8"(D)......compared.

I just got my futureshop newsletter (canada version of best buy basically. Owned by the same company anyways).

They are taking preorders to be shipped on the 26th. Free shipping too.

If I wasn't in my typical end of summer debt I would be getting one of these right now.

They are selling it for $299 canadian which is pretty insane. Our dollar is getting better right now but if it takes a dive anytime soon it would be almost worth it for you americans close to the boarder to hop on over and try and sneak one back with yah.

Sure, you've seen the pictures already, but just in time for the weekend, we thought we'd put together this video showing off the PlayStation 3 Slim, both on its lonesome and as it compares to the classic PS3 and its Xbox 360 competitor. There's also a small segment that confirms what many readers have asked about: yes, the 2.5-inch Serial ATA hard drive is indeed removable and is done so with Sony's blessing (i.e. no worries, it won't void your warranty). The HDD enclosure is located behind a front panel just under the disk drive, which is a snap to pull out once you undo the blue screw from the bottom of the console. Confused?
