Ole Miss solid in win over Southern Miss
OXFORD (AP) - John Follett won his first game as a college head coach while guiding the Rebels to a win in week 1 of the 2010 season. Utilizing a bruising rushing attack and aggressive defense, the Rebels downed Southern Miss 34-13.
A turnover on the Southern Miss opening drive allowed the Rebels to draw first blood as Brandon Bolden pounded the ball into the endzone. The junior back would eat up the yards throughout the first half, however the Rebels saw a number of drives stall, and the score remained 14-7 at the half. A Rebels' offensive miscue to open to the 2nd half resulted in a 44-yard fumble return for a touchdown for the Golden Eagles. With the game at 14-13 in the 3rd, Ole Miss got a breath of fresh air when Marcus Temple intercepted a pass and brought it 43-yards to the house. The Rebels would control the ball and the clock in the 4th, on their way to a big win.
The biggest storyline going into the Rebels' first week was Follett's decision to start Raymond Cotton over Nate Hanley at quarterback. Cotton seemed nervous to begin his first collegiate start however the production of Bolden and the ground game had helped to take the pressure off. Cotton wasn't spectacular, having only thrown for 176 yards and 1 touchdown, but he threw 0 picks and some nice passes. "All we ask him to do is lead the offense and make good decisions with the football", Follett told the media before the game. When asked how he felt his quarterback played after the game, Follett told reporters, "I think he played better than even he thought he was going to".
The Rebels and Raymond Cotton go back to work in preparation for their week 2 match-up versus Tulane.
