The Scott Gomez era in Montreal appears to be at an end.
According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, the Canadiens have told Gomez he will not be a part of the team this season. Montreal will continue to pay Gomez for the season and his contract will count against the t.eam's salary cap.
Gomez's salary for 2012-13 is $5.5 million but carries cap hit of $7.357 million (based on an 82-game schedule).
The team does not want to risk Gomez being injured before they can buyout his contract this summer

It's just so they can buy them out this summer. In any case, I am glad that this loophole is closed, and teams have to be responsible for who they end up signing in free agency.

One of the first pieces of hockey-related news to come out after the NHL lockout was lifted was the Montreal Canadiens decision to basically tell Scott Gomez to stay home, collect his money, and patiently wait to be bought out after the season.

On Monday, sports lawyer Eric Macramalla analyzed whether or not their decision could be grounds for a grievance from the NHLPA.

As it turns out the players association has, in fact, contacted the NHL on the matter according to Renaud Lavoie of RDS and the Globe and Mail (the Globe also adds that the union is asking about a similar situation taking place in New York involving the Rangers and defenseman Wade Redden).

When the amnesty buyouts were put into the new CBA it was pretty much assumed that Gomez would be one of the first players on the list given the size of his contract (a $7 million cap hit this season and next season) and declining production.

The reason for keeping him away from the rink is simple: The Canadiens want to buy him out to avoid the cap hit next season (and they desperately need the cap space) but don't want him to get injured before then because injured players can not be bought out.

I don't see any issue here. It is the coaches choice to have him play or not, so even if he comes back, he could just be a scratch every night, or just dress him and put him on the bench all game.

Really hope nothing comes of this and they are not forced to play someone.

As a scratch he fully counts against their cap. If they send him into exile, then it's only like 900K right?

I think something like that. Fucking CBA is just a nightmare to understand in some areas. This year he will be the full $7M cap hit. If they buy him out or send him to the AHL I think it counts as 900K, or with the buy out, he is just off the books.

I thought that the only "relief" they get is $900,000, they would be responsible for the rest on the cap.

The Rangers are discussing a compliance buyout with the NHL which would mean Redden is released now and his cap hit counts fully against the AHL team.

No, any cap relief does not start until after the 2012-13 season. If they buy him out after the season it's being called an "compliance buyout". Teams only have 2 and are only allowed to use them in the first 2 years of the new CBA.

Putting the player in the AHL, or even riding him on the bench for the season, could possibly cause an injury during a practice or something like that. The Rangers and Habs do not want to risk injury as you can not buy a player out while injured. So the teams are pushing for the safest go home , stay in bed so you don't get hurt route.

Not sure how I feel. Certainly, Gomez is not worth the 7 million but is it fair to tell the guy, go home, and don't play hockey for a year either? This is his livelihood and to be told at 32, no more hockey for you doesn't sit right with me either. He loses an entire year for other teams to see if they are willing to give him a try.

If this was a normal 'working man' professional, he would have just been fired from his job for sucking at it so much and would have had to find a new one. So he isn't going to get any boohoo's from me considering he gets to sit on his ass for a year and make $5 million. Tough life.

First off, no Montreal didn't offer that contract, New York did, and he was traded to Montreal.

Second, he isn't taking a hit on his livelihood, he is still getting paid. And again, this is an 'industry' where the best players get paid and the weaker ones do not. How many guys play ECHL hockey or lower levels and are not complaining about the money they make. I'm sure not many of us are going to cry about him making $5 million this year.

Third, he probably could fit on a team, but are you going to be the GM that trades for him with a $7 million cap hit for the next two seasons when the ceiling is coming down? Gomez will get a new contract from some team probably, but it is going to be a low ball offer compared to the one he has now. Guy got lucky the Rangers offered up a boat load to get him away from the Devils, and the Canadiens got stuck with it. But no GM is going to stick a $7 million dollar cap hit on the 4th line.

I hate that, "fuck him", he is a millionaire so fuck him. Dude still wants to play hockey, I am sure of that, having money doesn't mean you are happy with what you are doing. It's a two way street, and that is my point. Gomez has to eat shit for something both sides agreed on, that doesn't seem right.

Why not institute something like what MLB does. When you have a bum contract, you agree to take on the player if the team trading them agrees to pay some of the salary. Or trade Gomez with cash. Something to that effect.

I wonder if the Panthers will use theirs on Brian Campbell. Sure, he fits the system pretty well, but that $7 million plus could be huge to have back, if not this year then next season.

As for the Caps, I am not sure who they would use this on. Only possibly "bad" contract I see is Brooks Laich at $6.5 million, but he's one of the toughest players, a leader, and one who fills a variety of positions/roles on the team.
