I haven't seen the movie yet but it does look very interesting and exciting to see. I'm not really a fan of ''Horror'' movies, don't know why. Saw the trailer and it was alright, only thing that give me the creeps and ''What the Fuck?'' is the old women in the trailer.

Leonardo is truly is one of the best movie actress, agreed?

Meryl Streep is easily one of the best actors of all time. And this is not just my opinion. She is as natural and as real as it gets on screen.

Agreed 100% about Meryl Streep. As good as it gets on screen and has fantastic versatility.

She's the only woman that I can say that about. She was so powerful in Doubt that she was able to steal some scenes from Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who I think is one of the best actors out there today.

You made me laugh not because you thought she was good but because you listed all ACTORS(which are guys) and thought you were implying she was a dude. Which was why I laughed so hard.

Here's my 2 cents about the movie and the ending.. I read the book about 2 weeks ago and was still confused but the movie helped clear up a few things for me..

 

I feel the last scene can be interpreted by the viewer in one of two ways.

1. Like you guys were saying Leo purposely acts as if he is Teddy because he ignores the fact that he killed his wife and he ultimately wants to die.

2. Leo is actually so fucked up crazy that he can't control it and truly believes he is Teddy on an investigation. He doesn't know that he is going to be killed or whatever the fuck is gonna happen to him.


One thing though, I just reread the last chapter (final scene chapter that's 3 pages long), no where does it say this line:

"I dont know whats worse, to live on as a monster or die a hero"


I'm still fascinated of how close this movie stuck to the book, I can't remember a movie that has played out exactly like the book like SI.

However, in case you were wondering if the book had any differences I only noticed a couple big ones.

First, the whole 'Law of 4' deal where the 4 names have the same letters as eachother, was more of a storyline in the book. 'Rachel Solando' left more than 1 clue for Teddy including the name and Teddy was having trouble solving the fairly easy clue. Then in the lighthouse, just like the movie Cawley explains that the letters are the same.

The next noticeable difference came in between the blowing up of the car and Leo going to the lighthouse. In the book, after Leo blows up the car he runs through the island and sees the ferry. He then jumps into the water and clings onto the ferry but then hears the Warden go on the ferry telling the driver that the ferry is not leaving until he is found and he takes the keys. Then after this occurs is when Leo heads to the lighthouse.

Good post. I definitely felt as if the movie played out very much like the book, it was refreshing.

in the end, the new, radical role-playing experiment worked. however, when he was on the steps with the psychiatrist/chuck, he decided to lie and pretended to still be "Teddy Daniels". he chose to receive the lobotomy, erase the past, and EVENTUALLY die as a good (oblivious) man. He didn't want to live with the knowledge of his past. Remember, he blamed himself for the death of his children because he never intervened in his wife's mental problems.

In my town our movie theater had sh tter island as the name for the movie. I lol'd

Saw the movie last night and definitely had mixed feelings. Overall it was pretty damn good movie, considering the crap that has came out recently. It was very refreshing to see a live action movie blend minimal CGI effectively. Leo did a great job acting IMO and had a really memorable scene at the end with Jackie Earle Haley. Teddy talking with Gorge there was a very crucial piece to the plot and thought both actors did an outstanding job. Like I said I had mixed feelings... My main gripe was was how the end dragged on a little. they literally had to beat the twist into the audiences head! I understand some people are pretty dumb, but a simple flashback would have done, instead of Ben Kingsly repeatedly telling me something and Leo denying it. I also thought some parts were a little too predictable. But like someone e else said we can thank M. Night Shamalongdingdong for directors trying to one up each other with surprise ending.

Well worth the price of admisson.

Here is what I think:

 

I have read the book. In the book the final words are Teddy agreeing with Chuck that they're pretty smart. So in the book, he regresses and is Teddy once again. However in the movie it is obvious he is Andrew in the final scene. He realizes that this is his way out from what he is suffering from and thinks of himself as a monster for letting his wife kill the kids.

He wants to die a good man because he's atoned for his sins at that point and realizes he could relapse again. Basically he wants to die in his right mind rather than in an illusion.

I'd give it an 8/10, music was kind of annoying though.

Really enjoyed it, just another movie people will relate to Scorsese, although not as much as others. Like earlier posts have said, it had it's negative parts, especially in the scene in the lighthouse, it seemed unnecessary that they had to go through the twist like three times, but that's also a good example of how insane he was. Knowing the book ending is different, I think I like the movie ending a bit more.
