You knew eventually the Kings were going to break out for a huge game. I will say though, the Bernier hit is something I wish could be addressed more in the NHL, as I felt Scuderi put himself in the bad spot by turning his body. If he keeps going around the net and dumps the puck off, it would be a clean hit, but because he turned, he gaves drove into the boards. The call had to be made, but it just sucked that is how it had to go down.

The puck gets caught along the boards and is barely moving. Scuderi is playing the puck back to a teammate. There is no way for Scuderi to "keep going around the net" without slowing up to play the puck, and he doesn't have enough momentum to play the puck and continue around the net. And there is no way for it to be a "clean hit" by Bernier, because if Scuderi was somehow able to keep going around the boards, the angle Bernier was taking wouldn't have allowed him to even touch Scuderi...Bernier would have ended up about 10 feet behind Scuderi.

It was a terrible hit by Bernier, because you can tell Bernier shifts his angle to the right well after Scuderi played the puck and slams full force into Scuderi. Maybe you can explain to me what Bernier was trying to accomplish...if Scuderi magically was able to keep going around the net, Bernier is still about three seconds late getting to the puck and can make no play. If Scuderi plays the puck, his back has been to Bernier the entire time so Bernier has to know that he's going to get called for boarding.

Bernier is nowhere near Scuderi, and there is no chance that Bernier gets close enough to Scuderi to disrupt the play. The puck bounces off the corner of the board and loses momentum. Scuderi has to virtually stop just to play the puck. Also, Scuderi doesn't have enough momentum himself to magically jet himself around the net. I don't know what you are expecting Scuderi to do in that situation...Bernier is in the wrong, not Scuderi. Scuderi had enough time to turn his back to the play, and Bernier has enough time to change the direction of his momentum and slam full force into Scuderi's back well after the puck has been played. Again, if Scuderi was somehow able to keep going around the boards, the angle Bernier was taking wouldn't have allowed him to even touch Scuderi...Bernier would have ended up about 10 feet behind Scuderi.

I said Andrew Shaw could have avoided the hit since he clearly saw Smith behind the net and he didn't even try to avoid the hit.

I'm not saying Scuderi needed to jet around the net, I'm just saying I hate when players turn their back towards the boards in thos situations. Guys do it all the time and it always ends up badly. So many times in the regular season you see it, and when I played hockey, kids use to do that all the time to try and get a penalty. Just wish people would stop it, and take a look.

I think Ravin is just saying that Scuderi victimized himself because that's what players do now. He could have played it backhand or forehand along either end of the boards and not had to turn his back as much as he did. Players do this so that forwards can't hit them and Bernier's only legal option was to forfeit a chance to lay a big hit on the forecheck because of it.

All unimportant of course since the play should have been dead for a hit from behind minor on Jarret Stoll 5 seconds earlier. The referees made the right call on Bernier but shot themselves in the foot by missing an equally blatant though less violent illegal hit which would have stopped play and negated the Bernier forecheck. As if giving a phantom 5 minute powerplay (3 goals scored) wasn't enough the linesman then decided to really end the game by gifting the Kings a 4th goal early in the 2nd.

No, this is wrong. Scuderi's momentum has basically stopped him on the boards, and his back is facing Bernier. Bernier's straight-line charge is too straight, so in order to hit Scuderi Bernier has to skate to his right. There is no T-boning. I don't get why you have such a conflicting description of the play, but that usually happens in this forum.

You just said if Scuderi kept skating, Bernier couldn't have laid the hit. But he didn't. He slowed down and turned his back, putting himself in the position to get hit from behind. What is hard to understand about that. If he keeps skating, the worst that happens is a shoulder hit into the glass. Turning around put him into the position for a bad hit.

Nonsense. Perhaps you don't understand the logic of this forum because you don't know how fast a player like Steve Bernier can close a gap. Bernier would have easily took a big chunk off of Scuderi's side if he had continued to skate around the net (which would have been the logical thing to do if Scuderi had any care for his own personal safety). Thats terrible logic, because Scuderi's back is to Bernier the entire play. From 0:42 - 0:48 Scuderi's shoulders remain parallel with the back boards. You seem to be arguing that Scuderi turned his back to Bernier on purpose...and? Is he not allowed to do that? I thought the boarding rules were to prevent what Bernier did, not what Scuderi did. You also seem to be arguing that Bernier had no choice but to deliver the illegal hit. But if he has to change his path to hit Scuderi because Scuderi slowed up when he wasn't supposed to, then how can that be an argument?

So which is it? Did Bernier expect Scuderi to slow down an play the puck, and still decided to illegally board him? Or was Bernier expecting Scuderi to play the puck and continue around the net like Scuderi was "supposed" to do? I don't understand how Scuderi did something he wasn't "supposed" to do, its Scuderi's fault for putting himself in harm's way, yet Bernier hits Scuderi exactly where he anticipated he would meet him.

Perhaps you don't understand physics, but Bernier's speed is a detriment to him hitting Scuderi behind the net. His angle is too direct and he is going too fast to change direction enough to get at Scuderi. Even in the illegal boarding hit, Bernier still has to change direction to the right to get at Scuderi.

It boggles my mind that you can't see just how run of the mill everything about this incident was except that Scuderi exposed his own back. How can you possibly think that Bernier is going too fast to hit Scuderi when he, an experienced grinder who makes a living partially because of body checking, has tracked his movement all the way from the blue line and is only a few feet away as Scuderi closes in on the puck. There's not much variation to go through on this. Scuderi's either going to get hit on the side or the back depending on what he does, and it will be the exact same spot regardless.
