COMPUSTRIKE FIGHTER REPORT – 11/7 STRIKEFORCE
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers
(Fedor is a 5-1 favorite)
Fedor
1/24/09 KO 1 Andrei Arlovski – Arlovski was outlanding Fedor 18-8 in total strikes (12 arm strikes and six leg strikes) before attempting a flying knee after driving Fedor to the ropes. Fedor, who landed seven of 20 arm strikes, countered with single right hand to the suspect chin of Arlovski, who was counted out, face to the mat, at 3:14 of round one. Arlovski is the fifth UFC champ that Fedor has defeated, joining Tim Sylvia (KO 1); Antonio Nogueira (dec); Mark Coleman (sub.) and Kevin Randleman (sub.)
7/19/08 W sub 1 (rear naked choke- :36) Tim Sylvia – Fedor mauled the 260-lb Sylvia, landing several hooks and uppercuts that sent the two-time UFC champ to the canvas. Fedor pounced, causing Sylvia to tap out from a rear naked choke at :36. Sylvia did not land a single strike. The efficient Fedor landed six of nine attempted arm strikes.
4/14/07 W sub 1 (armbar – 2:58) Matt Lindland– Lindland was the aggressor, attempting to take Fedor to the mat after Fedor landed three strikes from the clinch. Fedor hip tossed Lindland to the mat into a dominant position and controlled the action attempting an armbar, then succeeding with another attempt at 2:58 of round one.
12/31/06 W sub 1 (kimura – 8:16) Mark Hunt – An interesting scrap, as Hunt held his own on the feet and on the ground. Only Fedor’s champion heart and superior conditioning allowed him to escape the dominant positions (and submission attempt) of the 260-lb Hunt, who gassed. Fedor landed 16 total strikes to 11 for Hunt, who secured three dominant positions. A Fedor takedown led to a kimura that forced Hunt to tapout at the 8:16 mark. Note: Pride first round is 10 minutes.
Brett Rogers
6/6/09 KO 1 Andrei Arlovski – Arlovski landed a low kick and it was all down hill from there, as Rogers landed a left hook, followed by two right hands and another hook. The fight was over in :22 after four landed arm strikes for Rogers.
4/11/09 KO 2 Ron Humphrey – Rogers dominated round one, landing 46 of 79 total strikes, including 32 of 62 arm strikes. A heated pace for a heavyweight. Rogers did severe damage from the Thai plum position, landing 14 knees. Humphrey had his moments, landing 21 of 49 total strikes, including 14 arm strikes. Rogers lost a point for repeatedly grabbing the dreadlocks of Humphrey. This will not be an issue vs. Fedor. A Rogers knee was the beginning of the end for Humphrey, who was hit with 18 arm strikes and eight more knees before the end came at 1:38 of round two. Overall, Rogers landed 73 of 113 total strikes (65%), including 50 of 86 arm strikes. Rogers also landed 23 knees.
5/31/08 KO 1 Jon Murphy – Murphy buzzed Rogers with a short right hand before a Rogers right cross dropped Murphy to the canvas. Rogers added four knees before the end came at 1:01 of round one.
2/16/08 KO 1 James Thompson – Thompson started fast but his momentum was quickly halted by a series of Rogers strikes from the clinch position. After eating Rogers leather, Thompson attempted a single leg that Rogers stuffed. Rogers then ko’d Thompson with a five punch combination that ended the fight at 2: 24 of round one. Overall, Rogers landed 21 of 28 arm strikes, 16 from the clinch position.
Overview:
Rogers has a puncher’s chance and has done damge in past fights with knees from the thai plum position. Fedor’s attack is a mixed bag of nastiness. He can punch with either hand and Rogers, who drops his left hand while throwing his right, will want no part of the internationally-experienced Sambo king on the ground. Both throw looping power shots, look for Fedor’s to get this first- midway through round one.
COMPUSTRIKE FIGHTER REPORT – 11/7 STRIKEFORCE
Jake Shields vs. Jason Miller
(Shields is a 2 ½-1 favorite)
Jake Shields
6/6/09 W sub 1 (guillotine choke- 2:02) Robbie Lawlor – Shields scored an early takedown, before Lawlor got fight to the feet and outlanded Shields 10-2 in arm strikes. Shields pulled guard with an arm-in guillotine choke forcing Lawlor to tap at 2:02 of round one. The win was Shields’ 12th straight. His last loss, nearly five years ago, was 12/14/04 L 3 (decision) to Akira Kikuchi at The Shooto Year End Show ’04.
10/4/08 W sub 2 (armbar- 3:47) Paul Daley- Shields mounted Daley with 3:15 left in round one and proceeded to land 35 ground strikes- never hurting the British striker. Daley was taken down by Shields after stuffing his previous two takedown attempts. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt then maneuvered into position for the armbar, as Daley tapped at 3:47 of round two. 43 of Shields’ 46 total strikes landed were from the ground. He also scored three takedowns.
7/26/08 W sub 1 (guillotine choke- 1:03) Nick Thompson – Shields followed a stiff body kick with a takedown that led to a one-armed guillotine that turned Thompson’s head bright red, forcing him to tap at 1:03- without landing a single strike.
11/10/07 W sub 1 (rear naked choke – 3:39) Mike Pyle – Shields was rocked by a knee as he shot a takedown. They exchanged takedowns before Shields mounted Pyle and ended the fight with a rear-naked choke at 3:39. Shields’ three takedowns led to 11 ground strikes landed among his 18 total strikes landed.
Jason Miller
12/15/07 W 3 (unan dec.) Tim Kennedy – Kennedy outlanded Miller 20-12 in round one, including 14-4 in arm strikes. Kennedy also scored two takedowns and had three submission attempts. Miller rebounded in round two by outlanding Kennedy 18-8 in total strikes, 14 of which came from the ground position. A Miller elbow opened a bad cut on Kennedy’s nose.
Miller survived two more Kennedy submission attempts in round three and dominated the round with 23 ground strikes landed. Overall, Miller landed 55 of 100 total strikes to 37 of 94 for Kennedy. 37 of Miller’s 55 landed strikes were from the ground.
12/1/06 KO by 2 Frank Trigg – Trigg too strong, Miller too sloppy. In first, Trigg outlanded Miller 40-4 in total strikes, including 29 from ground. Only a tolerant ref let fight continue into second round. The assault continued in round two, as Trigg outlanded Miller 36-7 in total strikes. Overall, Trigg had a 76-11 edge in total strikes landed.
Overview:
Shields has won 12 straight fights and has not lost in nearly five years. He’s submitted six of his last seven opponents. In this battle of grapplers, the huge edge goes to Shields, unless Miller can take it into the late rounds and test Shields’ sometimes questionable stamina.
COMPUSTRIKE FIGHTER REPORT – 11/7 STRIKEFORCE
Gegard Mousasi vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou
(Mousasi is a 4-1 favorite)
Gegard Mousasi
8/15/09 KO 1 Renato Babalu Sobral – the stoic Mousasi, making his U.S. debut, landed 12 of 14 total strikes in his 1:00 destruction of Babalu, who landed one strike all fight. The win was Mousasi’s 13th straight.
5/26/09 W sub 1 (armbar) Mark Hunt – Mousasi ducked a wild attempt from the 250-lb Hunt, tripped him to the mat, landing seven ground strikes. Mousasi then secured the armbar, causing a tapout at 1:19. Hunt landed one total strike.
9/23/08 KO 1 Ronaldo Souza – Dream 6 Finale. Mousasi was taken down to start the fight. He reversed Souza, then landed 11 ground strikes, the last a kick from his back that ko’d the highly-touted phenom at 2:15.
Mousasi has outstruck his last three opponents, Sobral (12-1), Hunt (8-1) and Souza (13-4) 33-6 in total strikes.
Thierry Sokoudjou
1/24/09 L sub 2 (anaconda choke) Renato Babalu Sobral – Big first round for Sokoudjou, who landed 22 of 36 total strikes, including 12 of 19 arm strikes. Babalu scored a takedown in round two that led to 23 ground strikes landed, including several hammerfists. Sokoudjou tapped from an anaconda choke at 2:36 of round two. Babalu landed 12 of 15 leg strikes.
12/29/07 L sub 2 (arm triangle choke) Lyoto Machida - Close, uneventful opening round, won by Machida, who landed 13 of 21 total strikes to six of just 14 for Sokoudjou. Sokoudjou, who entered the octagon wearing a Predator mask, rocked Machida with a right hand in the opening minute of the round and also scored two takedowns. Machida also had two submission attempts. Machida used superior footwork to set up a straight left hand that dropped Sokoudjou in round two. Machida then dominated Sokoudjou from the ground, landing 25 strikes before an arm triangle choke ended the fight at 4:20 of round two.
Overview:
Like Shields, Mousasi’s on a roll, having won 13 straight- including a one-minute destruction of Babalu in his last outing. Sokoudjou’s 3-3 in his last six, with two of those wins over limited hulks Bob Sapp and Jan Nortje. Sokoudjou will be dangerous early, however that aggression will give the patient Mousasi the openings he needs to end this one via ko.
COMPUSTRIKE FIGHTER REPORT – 11/7 STRIKEFORCE
Fabricio Werdum vs. Antonio Silva
(Werdum is a 7-5 favorite)
Fabricio Werdum
8/15/09 W sub 1 (guillotine choke) Mike Kyle – they exchanged on the feet from the opening bell, with Kyle landing four hard arm strikes, causing Werdum to shoot. Werdum scored the takedown, then passed a Kyle arm bar attempt to gain side control. Werdum secured a one-armed guillotine that forced Kyle to tap out at 1:24. Werdum landed 12 of 20 total strikes.
1/19/08 KO 2 Gabriel Gonzaga – rematch of 9/13/03 fight, won by Werdum, via third round ko. Not a terribly active first round, as Werdum landed 11 of 23 total strikes (only one of five arm strikes) to nine of 15 for Gonzaga, who landed seven hard kicks to carry the round. Werdum was much more aggressive in round two, landing 46 of 73 total strikes. He mixed his attack, landing 17 arm strikes, 11 leg strikes and 18 ground strikes against the now gassed Gonzaga, who managed to land nine leg strikes before the fight was stopped at 4:34 of round two.
Antonio Silva
7/26/08 KO 2 Justin Eilers – Silva got the better of the action in round one, due to size advantage and effectiveness on the ground. Silva landed 13 arm strikes, while Eilers landed 12. A Silva takedown and six ground strikes landed the difference. Silva attacked with combination punches opening round two, knocking out Eilers mouthpiece. Silva landed 15 arm strikes before the fight was halted :19 into round two.
11/10/07 W sub 1 (rear naked choke) Jon Wiezorek – total mugging, as Silva landed 40 total strikes to just one for Wiezorek, who tapped out 3:12 via a rear naked choke.
Overview:
Silva will not have his customary size advantage and his suspect takedown defense will be exploited by Werdum. Silva’s best shot is on the feet. If he doesn’t land the big one it’s tapout city by round two.
