I'm not a believer in babying pitchers, nobody in baseball for 100 years cared about pitch counts/innings/batters faced/etc, and guys still pitched for 20 years throwing 300 innings and starting 40+ games in four man rotations. And that's with prehistoric medical techniques.

All of a sudden, over the last 30 years, we blame every injury on being "overworked". Bullshit. If baseball players were still making $50k there would be no pitch counts. Guys are so babied now, 100 pitches, "throw days", etc. You know what they called a pitchers "throw day" 30 years ago? His next start.

I don't want to get into this argument again but there's a dramatic difference in how Bob Feller pitched and was developed as opposed to Johnny Cueto.

Reds have a bunch of good starters, all under 25. Chapman, Leake, Wood, Cueto, Volquez - all locked up for 5 or 6 years - sounds good to me.

The Reds have a ton of young pitching, but I'd still take Atlanta's young arms. Hanson, Jurrjens, Minor, Medlen, Venters, Vizcaino, Teheran, Kimbrel, etc. Then we have Freeman, McCann, Heyward and Prado all under 27.

You can't put a metric on a pitchers arm. It's a crapshoot.

In fact, in my opinion, part of the reason today's pitchers can't throw the number of innings as in the past, is because they are conditioned from the start to throw 90 pitches. There is absolultely no reason, with today's medical advances, that pitchers shouldnt be more durable today.

I also find it a bit humorous that you supply an article that was written 12 years ago, which basically says that Livan Hernandez's arm will fall off any day now, thanks to abuse by JIm Leyland, while Jason Schmidt is the model of how to treat a young arm.

It's 2010, and Livan Heranandez is still racking up 200 innings a year, has led the league in CG's, IP's, and batter faced numerous times since the article was written, and just signed a contract extention. I couldnt tell you the last time Schmidt threw a major league pitch (essentially retired after arm problems).

I don't disagree that if guys were trained from the beginning to pitch higher innings/pitches they'd likely be better off.

However, I do think young pitchers pitch far too much before they are developed and I believe people sacrifice clean deliveries for quicker to the plate deliveries.

To be fair, most of Wood's overuse occurred under Riggleman and he was bound to have arm problems with his delivery.

Arroyo actually only has 2 games above 110 pitches. Cueto has 6, Harang 7, Bailey 5 and Wood 1.

that can be deceiving, what if the two that Arroyo threw over 110 were 130+ but the other pitchers were just over 110
