Hypothetical 2011 NCAA Playoff system:

LSU plays the hardest schedule in the country, wins every game. They are the champions.

Too many games?

Play an 11 game schedule and if one of the lower seeded teams runs the table they end with 15 games. One more than some teams played going 13-1 etc.

Adding onto this point, D2 and D3 schools play 15 games if they go to the championship of the playoff all the time.

glen, HS teams play 14-15 games if they win their state titles... adding one or two games isnt going to be detrimental... that being said, 14 should be the max, including playoffs...

Again if you aren't the 8th best team at the end of the regular season then you aren't deserving to play for the title.

Also, I disagree with schools pulling schollies...but the length of the season isn't an issue. I don't recall anyone complaining when bama played 14

You cannot tell me that NIU, Arkansas State, and LTU are more deserving of a playoff bid than Kansas State, Michigan, Alabama, even Baylor!

this may be something you may or may not have already discussed, but opening it up to where all 11 conference winners get a bid to the playoffs will level the recruiting field exponentially... all these CUSA, MAC, Sun Belt and WAC teams will be able to use the "hey, we got the same shot at a national title that everyone else has" pitch... then there would be true parity in college football, provided they also stop allowing oversigning and even greyshirting... and yes, it would take time, but it would be awesome to see...

These schools don't have the enrollments or the alumni to support a top program though. Many of them are where they are for a reason, and I don't think a shot at a NC changes it all that much. It's not like kids are turning down bench spots on the UNC basketball team because the College of Charleston offers them a chance to start.

In basketball one great player can make a world of difference and cause an upset. In football that player isn't even on the field half of the game.

You point to NCAA tourney as an example, I point to how many people tuned out of the Sugar Bowl as Georgia was giving it to Hawaii in every orifice. The schools that win the CUSA, MAC and especially the Sun Belt would get whitewashed every year by the SEC, Pac12, Big12, hell even the ACC champs in a way that wouldn't even be fun to watch.

That game meant zero. Nothing. Nada. Georgia vs Hawaii in a game with National Title Tournament advancement issues.....Huge ratings..to start with. Hell how many people do you think tuned out with LSU vs Georgia in a game that "meant something"(even though it didn't) in the current system?

The current system just gave us two conference championship games in the two best conferences in America that meant zero.

Of course they are willing to go out and play those games because they really aren't putting much on the line to do so. The top eight programs in D1 will likely be sending how many guys to the NFL every season? 40? 50?

You're asking kids to risk millions of dollars so we can get teams that couldn't even crack the top 10 involved.

I really don't think this is as big of an issue as you're making it out to be Glen. Players won't really care either way whether or not they play 13 or 15 games, they just wanna play and will love any opportunity to do so.

What's to stop them from just scheduling nobodies and FCS schools in the preseason and then just walking through their weak conference to the playoffs every year?

Some FBS teams are doing that already.

You have the NCAA set scheduling guidelines.....and if they do that then get run in the playoffs and it was all for naught.

Fair? How it fair to cut half of the teams in D1 completely out of the national title picture, with some rare exceptions, every year based on the "they can't compete" notion. Ok. Give them a shot. They get run, they get run. We see it in other sports. They win and make a Cinderella run.... :fap:

In the end I don't support any system that has at large bids in college football. Win your conference or STFU. Adding the smaller conferences is an issue I will always push for but I'd live with a 4 6 or 8 team playoff with only conference champs.

I think there are already a lot of rumblings about paying players and adding games to their schedule (and $$$ to the school's coffers) is only going to increase the volume.

But you're really not adding games. ND will play 13 games this season. LSU and Georgia will play 14 this year. You cap the regular season at 11 games. Max 3 additional games for a playoff(in my scenario) all is equal to what it is now to the team that wins.

Then they need to re-align the conferences and balance the schedules. Lets put Texas in the Sun Belt and see how many times any team but Texas wins that conference.

Cinderella games happen in football, Cinderella runs do not.

Because we don't have a system that allows for it.

BTW if you don't think this would happen three years into your system (and the Sun Belt would jump at the chance) you're crazy. The big schools will find a way around whatever you throw in front of them because they have the means to mold the system any way they want.

Texas would kill their brand doping so. There is way too much money tied into the big conferences in academics and across all sports for that to happen

If you can't beat Nevada should you really be playing for the NC?

One game anything can happen. Boise has also shown the ability to play with anyone and everyone over the last few years.

And this year it was TCU...a pretty damn good team.

On the flip side, Boise has run the table and so has TCU and neither has gotten a shot.
