Seattle Signs Mckenzie

While many hoped for Seattle to take on a big name free agent acquisition such as Davone Bess or Marlin Jackson, GM Mark Chiarelli stayed for the most part pat with his plans, not meeting any outrageous contract demands. The team did sign OLB Tyrone Mckenzie, a 2nd year guy out of USF. Mckenzie was on the Patriots roster for all of the '09 season, but was never suited up because of recovering from a torn ACL. Mckenzie brings a lot of athleticism off the edge in a 3-4, as he is able to cover the tight end as well as put a little heat on the QB. Expect Mckenzie to get into the games mainly on third down and on special teams.​

Seattle Makes Two Trades Hours before Draft

With the draft set for a 7PM start time tonight, the Seattle Seahawks felt they needed to make their moves sooner rather than later. RE Patrick Kerney has been dealt, and multiple reports have surfaced it is in fact to the New York Jets. The Jets do not currently have a RE on their roster while 10 year vet Shaun Ellis occupies the other end position. The Seahawks in return have acquired New York's 2nd round draft pick, that round will take place tommorow night. Kerney had a solid amount of tackles from the end position last year at 41, but could not seem to get that extra pressure to the QB only accounting for 3 sacks. Now Kerney can worry about stuffing the run in New York in Rex Ryan's vaunted defense.

The team has also dealt WR Deion Branch to the New England Patriots for the Patriots 5th round draft pick, which is 32nd overall. Deion Branch could never quite get healthy enough during his tenure in Seattle, and was overtaken on the depth chart by Deon Butler. Branch will get a chance to be reunited with QB Tom Brady who has not masked that he wants Deion back in New England. Hopefully it is a good fit for both.

The Seahawks now go into draft day with 9 selections, two selections in the second round and two selections in the fifth round. ​

Digging your draft picks. Cody should be a beast. You get a possible future QB in McCoy. You add explosiveness to your offensive with Spiller. You get a good return man in Arenas. A possible #1 or #2 Receiver in Mardy Gilyard. Very good draft, sir.

Seattle Seahawks Draft Grade: B

I like what we did in the beginning rounds, but having the chance to acquire Randy Phillips or Major Wright and not capitalizing was a major disappointment. With Wade Phillips coming in and making the move over to the a 3-4 defense, we needed someone for the long haul up the middle who could routinely take on two blockers and make plays. That man was 365 pounder Terrence Cody out of Alabama, who will feast on running backs who try to break it up the middle. With Brandon Mebane making the move over to LE, that leaves us with two 300+ pound lineman and then the rising star in Lawrence Jackson. Having Cody up the middle will also help David Hawthorne and Lofa Tatupu get free.

Picking up Trent Williams may seem like a head scratcher at the moment, but 2-3 years from now when Walter Jones has either retired or his contract runs up, Williams will be the guy in waiting. Tyler Sash is also a pick for the future, because our defensive secondary comes in looking exactly the same as last season. I don't know how long Deon Grant will be able to last at SS, and Jordan Babineaux is a big question mark. The third round was the beginning of a lot of low risk high reward type picks. C.J Spiller was one of the most electrifying players in this draft, we could potentially see him and Cedric Peerman as the running back duo of the future.

I like what I saw from Colt Mccoy in college. Dude is a gamer, and with ample time to develop he could possibly flourish in the West Coast Offense. Of course we also have Mike Teel as a young QB, but we aren't sure either of those guys will pan out. Iliked the pick up of Javier Arenas. He's an explosive return man and a pretty good cover corner for someone of his stature. We picked up a lot of exciting players this draft. Mardy Gilyard, C.J Spiller, Javier Arenas, they can all make plays at any given instant. ​

EDIT: I also find it alarming that Seneca Wallace has a considerably better overall rating than Colt McCoy, even regarding that he is a rookie.

Preseason Outlook

As we head into year two, there is obviously a pressing issue that we need to see some sort of improvement. The roster looks a lot different than last seasons. We have lost the depth outside at WR and CB, but have improved all around. The franchise LT is potentially in place, we have playmakers at every offensive position, and have one of the youngest and most impressive front sevens around. It's now time to check out the training camp battles that will take place.

QB. We have four guys at quarterback and only three will most likely make the team. The obvious two to watch is Mike Teel and Colt McCoy. Teel is the incumbent, and has always made great strides under the watchful eye of Matt Hasselbeck. Colt McCoy is the new guy, and although it seems that you don't cut a 4th round draft pick stranger things have happened under coach Jim Mora Jr.

Halfback is also an issue for this team. Last season on paper looked to be a closer race, but the word inside Seahawks camp is that they absolutely love Cedric Peerman and his improvement. C.J Spiller is the home run hitting playmaker that this offense needs at halfback. There are also plenty of good running backs looking to get picked up in free agency as well. Nothing is safe for Julius Jones.

Everywhere else, the positions seem to be set. We could see Seattle take in another wide receiver and DB depending on the asking price. Marshawn Gilyard and Javier Arenas may not be NFL ready as of now, it all depends. Defensive line is set, the linebackers are set, and we don't see Tyler Sash being a challenger at safety.​
