Seahawks Bring in Two More

Adding to the list of young players the Seahawks have acquired, Seattle has brought in two more players to compete for jobs. HB Samkon Gado and WR Darius Reynaud have been brought in to potentially garner playing time in the regular rotation. Samkon Gado is in his 5th season out of Liberty, and has seen time with the Green Bay Packers, Houston Texans, Miami Dolphins, and St. Louis Rams. Darius Reynaud is in his 3rd season out of West Virginia. He caught 17 passes for 182 yards a year ago in Minnesota. He is only 5'9, but has very reliable hands and is very quick. Gado is a power style running back. ​

Seahawks Make Surprising 2 Cuts

The Seahawks only had 51 guys on roster and needed to get down to 50. But they went one less, cutting down to 49 and cutting two players who have had prominent roles on this ball club at one time or another. The Seattle Seahawks released QB Seneca Wallace and HB Julius Jones, replacing both with youth. Wallace spent 7 years in Seattle, totaling 22 TD's and 2847yds. Jones is a 6 year veteran who started in Dallas but came over to Seattle in hopes of becoming the feature back. Things did not work out as management planned. Jones topped 1000 yards in his career once in Dallas, but only rushed for 1500 yards in 2 seasons in Seattle. He still had three years left on his deal. The team will move forward with Mike Teel the back up quarterback and Cedric Peerman the starting halfback. Peerman was signed last season during training camp as someone who was supposed to compete for the third string job, but now finds himself being thrust into the starting role after impressing coaches. C.J Spiller will back Peerman up and Samkon Gado will be the short yardage back.​

Season Outlook

After making improvements on both sides of the ball this year, Seattle hopes to rise up in the standings somewhat. A record of 8-8 will be challenging but not impossible this season, as they play many teams who they can stay competitive against. If another 4-12 season repeats, I would not be surprised if Jim Mora finds his way out the door and either Wade Phillips gets promoted from the defensive coordinator position, or the team goes out and hires a new head coach. QB is a huge question mark for this team. This is the final year of Matt Hasselbecks contract, and even though he is coming off one of his best seasons in recent memory, he will turn 35 during the season. The tricky situation is that there is only one QB in this year’s draft worth taking to build your team around, and that QB is Sam Bradford. If all goes to plan Seattle may be out of reach of Bradford, and yet again stuck at the QB position.

Running back will also continue to be an issue. Can we rely on Cedric Peerman? From the streets to starting in a little over a year, Peerman has impressed but is not on path to turn into a feature back. C.J Spiller will be the change of pace guy, and the team hopes to see marked improvement from him as the season progresses. Although this is a very deep class in terms of WR, I wouldn’t expect a move to be made there. Both T.J Houshmanzadeh and Nate Burleson are still under contract for the foreseeable future and Deon Butler, Darius Reynaud and Marshawn Gilyard are all still very young. LG and Center will be positions to watch as both Chris Spencer and Rob Sims are in the final year of their contract. If both ask for big money we could see the Seahawks look elsewhere for offensive line help. Brandon Mebane is a free agent to be and the Seahawks are not ones to offer larger than granted contracts. The defensive backfield is a huge area of concern as well. Josh Wilson progressed fabulously as a second CB, but could look for a large payday.

Scouting

There are still plenty of areas of concern on this football team. It all starts on the line of scrimmage, which is why it is imperative to keep the offensive line’s foundation secure. With both Rob Sims and Chris Spencer up for new contracts, could the Seahawks take the boring approach to this draft again and go offensive line? Or could the ‘Hawks perhaps try to take the future QB in Sam Bradford. Both the running back and Wide Receiver positions are loaded this draft, which makes a selection there just as enticing. And don’t forget the defensive secondary. Jordan Babineaux is in need of a replacement as well as possibly one if not both of the CB positions. San Francisco Players to Watch
If this 49ers team expects to win, they are going to have to rely on the rushing game a lot. Alex Smith is yet again the starting QB leaving them with no dangerous passing attack. Both Frank Gore and Glen Coffee will have to produce not only today but the entire season to give the Niners a chance. On defense, it all starts with Patrick Willis. In my opinion the best MLB in the league, Willis had 141 tackles a season ago. Look for him to give Cedric Peerman second thoughts on if he really wants the starting job. Injury Report: Chilo Rachal is out with a quad injury.

Seattle Seahawks Players to Watch
Matt Hasselbeck is under the Seattle spotlight yet again. He’s been rumored to be out for the past 2 seasons yet still finds himself #1 on the depth chart. With a questionable RB by Committee behind him, Hass may have to throw the ball even more than last season. Defensively I can’t wait to watch big Terrence Cody. Although he may not make a ton of tackles Cody is a dominant force in the run game plugging the middle. If you do not double team him, he will make you pay. Injury report: Nate Burleson is out with a partial groin tear and Chris Spencer is out with a Quad injury.

Stout Seahawks Defense Comes up Huge, 'Hawks Win Opener

Seattle If Seahawks fans are looking for signs to be optimistic early, look no further than the amazing defensive showing today. The 49ers hopped on the board early, but that in part due to a INT that took them to the Seahawk 1 yardline. The only other points they scored were on a fumble returned for a touchdown. The Seattle defense did not allow a single drive of over 2 plays to score any type of points. Seattle was however down 14 after the returned fumble, but Cedric Peerman redeemed himself rumbling into the endzone from 14 yards out.

Cedric Peerman tied the game up late in the third quarter, taking a toss to the outside and punching it in from 11 yards out. A defensive struggle for most of the game, Peerman was not able to get a consistent rushing attack going. Matt Hasselbeck faced pressure all day long, seriously affecting his throwing decisions. But Hasselbeck was able to maneuver his offense down the field late in the 4th quarter, and Samkon Gado was able to power behind the center into the endzone from one yard out giving the Seahawks the lead and eventually the victory.

Coming off an impressive defensive performance against the Niners, Seattle will have to kick it up even further if they hope to stay competitive against the Cardinals. Seattle heads in at 1-0 while Arizona is 0-1.

Arizona Players to Watch
Arizona still has the high flying offense of Kurt Warner, Larry Fitz, Anquan Boldin, and Steve Breaston which does not bode well for a team that only plays 4 DB and has a tendency to not be able to force turnovers. If Arizona wants to win it will come down to Kurt Warner effectively marching the offense up and down the field building a lead early. Matt Hasselbeck hasn't look great so far the five times we've seen him this season so passing may become a bit of a problem. I'm also looking forward to watching Rodgers-Cromartie go at it with T.J Houshmanzadeh.


Seattle Seahawks Players to Watch
Both Nate Burleson and Chris Spencer will miss today's game. It will be interesting to see if Cedric Peerman can find some holes and break off a big run or two, he will be key to delivering a balanced passing attack. The entire front seven had a spectacular performance on Sunday, hurrying throws creating pressure and plugging up most holes to run with. They will need to stay dominant to be competitive.

Offense Lays Egg, 'Hawks Drop Game to 'Zona

Arizona Matt Hasselbeck certainly hasn't quieted his doubters so far this season. In the first two games of the season Hasselbeck has failed to go over 150 yards and now has 4INT to zero touchdowns. Cedric Peerman broke his first big run of the regular season, flying 61 yards for the touchdown to go up 7-0. Kurt Warner answered not even a full minute later, hitting Larry Fitzgerald for a 25 yard TD pass. That was the kind of night Seattle had, whenever something went their way there was an immediate counter reaction against them.

Neil Rackers knocked in two field goals from 30 and 43 yards respectively in the second quarter, which proved to be the lone scoring in the quarter. Both defenses started to dig in after the first quarter. Both teams continued to trade off defensive stops, Arizona going three and out and Seattle for the most part turning it over. But it took a Lerod Stephens-Howling 78 yard punt return to put the deficit at two scores in the third quarter. That was the lone touchdown on the second half, as neither team could really do much more.
