thats his opinion but the circumstances around what actually happened contradict that. Michigan State pursued him hard and he was going to come up here to interview changed his mind and said he was holding out for an NFL job. then he ended up in cincy a few weeks later

Lewis called the Spartans' opening a "great opportunity" and "very intriguing." He said a "little bit" of the decision was based on a desire to be in the NFL rather than college.

"I've been battling something here in the NFL," Lewis said. "We've got things left to do here. I'd like to be a head coach. I'm not sure where at. I just felt like that wasn't the time. There's some things left undone."

Highly doubtful. Tomlin and Lewis got those jobs because they were the best guys for those jobs.. not because they were the token minority candidate like Art Shell or Dennis Green.

As far as Tomlin goes, he only got interviewed b/c of the rule.

Rooney recently announced the hiring of Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin, 34.

"Mike Tomlin wouldn't have gotten this opportunity without this rule," said Shell, the first modern black NFL head coach. "He never would have sat down with Dan Rooney."

Said Rooney: "To be honest with you, before the interview he was just another guy who was an assistant coach. Once we interviewed him the first time, he just came through and we thought it was great. And we brought him back and talked to him on the phone and went through the process that we do, and he ended up winning the job.

"[The rule] wasn't the most important thing because he was the most important thing. Mike got the job because he showed us his ability and showed us what he could do, and we believed in him."

Said Tomlin: "I think it's given me an opportunity to present myself maybe in some situations that I wouldn't have had."

If the rule was not in effect, Mike Tomlin never becomes head coach of the Steelers b/c he likely never gets to the interview phase.

The percentage of minority coaches in the NFL compared to the NCAA should be evidence that the Rooney rule does work. A few organizations obviously try to get around the rule, however, a lot of organizations do not. Wasn't that the intent of the rule? To get more minority coaches in the NFL? I'd say it's working pretty well.

an interesting aspect of the situation in college is the effect the players could have on it. When Kellen winslow jr was picking a college his father wanted him to go to a school with a black coach to send a message well he went to miami instead. Had he decided to go to a school based on the color of the coach it could have had a huge ripple effect.
 
the point of the rule is not to get 'them' jobs, it is to get them interveiwed so the people that hire coaches will look at them as viable canidates. as was mentioned before about tomlin and lewis, they were brought in to satisfy the rule and when the opportunity arose they wowed the team owners. the rule is not like affirmative action, the best quailified applicant will still getteh job under the rooney rule. it is only there to get some one else besides the same 10 or 12 old white men into the process, after that the rest is up to the person. what people dont realize is that before the rule no one would even interview a black man for a head coach spot.
 
It's a joke. It hasn't helped a single black HC yet. Tomlin was the 2nd minority interviewed by the Steelers behind Ron Rivera (Puerto Rican). He wasn't interviewed to satisfy any rule or anything.

The only other black HC to get hired since the rule were Art Shell, Lewis, Mike Singletary and Raheem Morris, from which two of were promoted from coordinator and probably would have regardless of the rule. All the rule is doing it making certain black coaches like Denny Green token interviewers

I agree. Wisenhunt/Grimm likely would of had the job if it wasn't for this rule. Glad they chose Tomlin.
 
The only time the Rooney Rule actually works is when all the coaches being looked at aren't big marquee names. When a team has someone they've fallen for, ala Cowher, Gruden, Shanahan, or any other big name coach, they'll basically get the token interview to bypass the rule.

Hell, Carroll already has his contract, and the Seahawks are about to go to Craigslist just to find a black guy to interview.

BTW, I wouldn't use the Raiders as a team as an example of being a team that does the token black interview. Seeing as they were the first team to have a minority coach, and the first team to have a black coach.
