Nothing wrong at all with protesting, poppies have no place in football or sport. If an individual wants to wear a poppy in support then by all means go ahead but it shouldn't be forced on people. How do you think supporters will feel seeing the team wear poppys in support of the British Army that murdered family and friends. Politics should be kept out of sport and I'm really disappointed that the club has decided to have poppies on the shirt this weekend.

If you think supporting our troops is political you are an ignorant scumbag. I doubt you'll find anyone in Scotland other than the most ignorant of people at Celtic Park, who are mostly from Ireland anyway, who don't support our troops.

If you don't want to see the poppy go support a club in Ireland. Celtic are a Scottish club and Scottish clubs support Scottish and British troops.

I am British. I'm not even a Unionist but I am British. British troops fight for our defence in the manner which is judged best by politicians. They do not make the decisions, they pick up their guns and go wherever they are told. They are apolitical.

The poppy represents the honour of and financially supports troops who have served in France, Germany, Ireland, the Falklands, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq, Afghanistan and wherever else their services have been required. We owe an infinite debt to them.

Next weekend is Remembrance Sunday, poppies are sold in the weeks leading up to it and people wear them in support of the troops and the money raised goes to the British Legion. Obviously witch Celtic having a high percentage of Catholic/Irish supporters many aren't very happy that the the players will have poppies on their shirt next weekend in support and raising money for the British Army that killed many innocent people during the Troubles and other wars, though I wouldn't expect our resident hun here to understand. Basically it comes down to religion, Protestants consider themselves British and Unionists normally while the Catholics don't consder themselves brittish and are Nationalist/Republican, it's an extremely sensitive subject..

Not really. The Troubles are a fringe part of public perception of politics these days. People are far more interested in the progress of co-operation, as can be seen at Stormont. Most reasonable people in Ireland want to move forward.

As far as Scottish people are interested in this sectarian ignorance, The Troubles are not even a blip on the radar, and this stunt has been universally condemned.

Not in the Catholic/Nationalist community it hasn't and we'll soon see how much progress has been made when Sinn Fein become the biggest party up North in the next election. I agree most don't express it as extremely or won't outright say it but the anti-British sentiment is still as strong as ever. They might not be pro-Republican but they are certainly still Nationalists. I know loads of people that find the poppies offensive and are against them but this really isn't the thread for this kind of talk, so let's go back to talking football but I'll leave you with a lovely wee tune for your listening pleasure :smug:

Sorry to turn this a little political but I'd hardly consider Afghanistan to be shameful. Iraq I guess you might have an argument but not Afghanistan. Its one of the wars in history I'd consider justifiable.

To be honest, when I think of the Poppies, I think primarily of WW1 and WW2. In both of these wars, Canadian troops fought valiantly next to British troops (and as part of British brigades) and were often noted as the best fighters in the war. Being a soldier is being a soldier. I think memorializing those who have died or been wounded in service is irrespective of the wars that they fought in.

I think the Iraq war is bunk and am proud of Canada's fringe status in that war. Doesn't mean it's not tragic when a well meaning Canadian soldier dies at the hands of an IED
