The vinyl/record/LP/7 inch Thread

What is the preferred style of storage for you guys? I currently have mine on the bottom shelf of my bookshelf, but I'm running out of space, I think I might just go with wooden crates or something until I have enough space to build my own shelves.

Milk crates if you want to be cheap. Ikea has shelves that serve as great record shelves if you want to be cheap, but stylish.

Found what was left of my dad's collection this summer, some good stuff in there: Houses of the Holy original press, some Bowie, but some stuff no one should have (ABBA).

Ah, lovely, lovely records...

Both are reissues, I missed the chance to get 'Wrong' before NMN deleted all their stuff from Alternative Tentacles and I dread to think how much a 1972 copy of the Delia Derbyshire LP would cost.

Still, I'm more of a listener than an antiques collector so OPs don't really bother me that much. I'd rather a brand new, 180g virgin pressing for a semi-reasonable price rather than spend £200 on a dog-eared, ring-worn bit of scratched, flimsy plastic.

The floor can do the job when you're stuck for shelf space, as long as you store them upright and make sure that the end record is against a flat surface.

It's not perfect but it saw a big chunk of my collection through my college years.

If you're tempted to take on a little DIY project though it didn't take me long to build a load of these last year.

Just a big sheet of 18mm plywood cut into 13"x13" and 13"x14" panels, fix them together with a bit of wood glue and some screws - best to use both, records are surprisingly heavy - then a good sand down and finish with some paint and/or varnish - gloss for the inside to get a nice glide when sliding your records in and whatever your missus thinks matches the soft furnishings on the outside.

The good thing with them is you can use them anywhere. Stack them 8 foot high from floor to ceiling, put them all around the house wherever you can find a bit of space or just fix them to the wall with some heavy duty mirror brackets. Just remember to insulate the back of them if you're fixing them to an exterior wall, I used a square of underfloor insulation stuck onto a sheet of hardboard and then tacked it onto the back.

Basic but they get the job done and I can take them with me anywhere I move in the future.

Anyone know if the Tron: Legacy sountrack will be getting a vinyl release? I looked around but found nothing.

No clue. If Daft Punk sell vinyl's it's probable. But, since it's a soundtrack it might be going through a different record company. And soundtrack's usually aren't out on vinyl's. I guess you'll have to wait and see.

Ah, the annual Christmas buying break.

When I was a kid I used to get all excited waiting for my presents on Xmas day, now I get all excited a few days after Christmas when I can start buying records again.

Went a bit mad last year though. A combination of rare financial stability and cabin fever brought on by freak weather conditions resulted in me buying this lot before the end of January.

My wallet hurt afterwards.

The soundtrack is owned by Disney and will be distributed as such. So far only a CD has been announced, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Cramps records always look brilliant on vinyl. Trashy, 50s-style pinup shots with a seedy undercurrent and a tangible threat of violence.

They don't come across anywhere near as well on CD's or fucking thumbnails.
