Just to correct bucky. Archie Manning was never the MVP of the NFL. He was named the NFC POY once.

I thought he was NFC MVP, but it was Offensive Player of the Year? I still loved to watch the guy play. I felt so bad for him on those horrible Saints teams.

Exactly. I cant fathom saying Sanders is the GOAT with surrounding talent being the basis then somehow putting him ahead of Payton.
Payton was an absolute beast and had a flawless game. Had some insane highlights , tough as nails performances ,and was a prototype back. Had the all time rushing and TD record and did most of with teams that would make Barry quit first day of camp.

I don't think Payton ran behind a Pro Bowl offensive lineman until 1984.

And KOF I havent read the dissertations you have been writing but I caught that last part. Nobody said Emmit is overrated and Im not here to argue that one way or the other. My argument is that Emmit Smith is/was not a better RB than Barry Sanders. As a neutral party who watched both and take into account the talent surrounding the 2 its not even a question who was the better of the 2.

While Sanders may not have been on dead last teams throughout his career his teams were usually middle of the pack to consistantly average and even bad some years while Emmits were constantly amongst the best. The talent between their teams isnt even debatable, Dallas wins far and away and its relevant when making a case for either man. Barry did far more with much less but your bias for the Cowboys wont allow you to acknowledge the obvious.

How many HOF players were on the Lions offense again during Barrys playing days. I mean the man retired because he was tired of being on such a mediocre team year in and year out.

Why not have a "Neutral" discussion about Rice , any 00's Patriots , Vick , Warner , Favre.
Theres teams and players that instantly form like or dislike.
This isnt Richmond Webb vs Anthony Munoz. These are 2 of the biggest names and THE marquee RBs of our generation. One of them happens to play on the most loved and most hated team not wearing pinstripes.

Neutral opinions are few and far between.
Emmitt Barry like I said 2 of my 3 fave players of all time. The reason I couldnt ever move away from Football. If Barry was clearly better Id say it.

His 77 season was gross. 1800+ 14 tds 14 game season. With the QB 1800 yards passing and an almost 2-1 INT to TD ratio.

Yea, Im still learning to read so bare with me.

Again its not debatable. Barry Sanders never, ever had half the talent Emmit Smith on his team but still managed to have stellar years and even went for 2000. Emmit was solid but wasnt on Barrys level. Barry doesnt retire, Emmit plays second fiddle. Thats based on what I seen not some shot in the dark assumption.

Barry Sanders the best I have seen in my day while Emmit is one of your 3 favorite players. No need to argue any more, that says it all.

Barry made the playoffs in half of his NFL seasons. That's not that bad. And it should be noted that in the playoffs Barry played like shit so some would have to think that Barry needs to look into the mirror as well as to why his teams didn't go further.

In all seriousness, I'm in the Barry camp.. but you definitely couldn't go wrong with Emmitt in the 90's. I remember the MNF game where he carried the 'Boys to a win over NY with literally one arm.

Emmitt was one of the greatest to play the game at that position. If there are players better than him, it's only a small handful.

A least one coach said Smith was a great player at any time in any conditions, but Sanders only excelled at certain times.

I'm not sure if I agree, but I can't remember a great Sanders playoff game. I can remember more great Smith playoff games than I care to remember.

In '93 he lit up Green Bay. The Lions lost.

Barry and those Lions teams were built to win and play one way. In the playoffs though that style was really conducive to winning games. I don't want to use the term one dimensional but something along those lines...

The Eagles have the same problem. Andy Reid thinks a 95-5 pass/run ratio is a winner.
The Eagles ran shotgun on first down more than 31 other teams did on 2nd and 18.

I'd also like to throw in there that Emmitt ran for nearly 1,000 yards for the Arizona Cardinals at the age of 35. Not that it's a hard and fast comparison or example but in my mind this proves he was a damn good back and would have put up monster numbers in his prime/over his career anywhere he played.
