Coins unlock slowly in the context of item price, which is where EA aims to lure players toward its downloadable add-on content. The publisher learned from Tiger Woods 12 that locking courses behind a pay-to-play gate was a mistake, so Tiger 13 tries to meet the audience in the middle. Coins earn players access to new courses, so playing Tiger Woods 13 as normal rewards players with extra content without having to spend real-world money. Even better, completing challenges unlocks courses permanently.

This is the pitch, anyway. The reality is that EA's new system is a disgusting, well-disguised sham that makes past DLC traps look like charity.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 restricts access to 20 of its 36 courses. Players can rent one round on a locked course for 6000 Coins, the earnings of about 10 rounds at 18 holes, each of which takes about 20 minutes. For those who can't spend the inordinate amount of time required to borrow one round of golf, EA presents the option to pay for Coins. Rather than selling the audience iconic places like Banff Springs, it's made it more expensive than ever – and it's temporary.

Completing "Gold Mastery" tasks is the only way to open a course forever. The challenges are not only extremely difficult and time consuming -- sinking five Eagles, hitting the green in regulation 80 times, etc. -- but must be completed on each course players hope to own. Tiger 13 golfers need to pay dozens if their hours and/or dollars to spend additional time to possibly access a course indefinitely.

EA is well within its right to restrict access to as much optional content as it pleases, but Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 features an exploitative add-on system which displays complete contempt for its audience.

Online Country Clubs are the best way to soften the blow of the DLC structure and make the most of the Tiger 13 economy. The more people who join a Club, the more they contribute to its rank and status, and the more days in a row its members play, the more Coins everyone makes. This cyclical system is absolutely for the Tiger faithful, and hardcore players should can maximize their gain.

Yeah, what Maynard said...the DLC for extra courses is the most extravagent piece of bullshit I have ever seen in my life.

First impressions: HOLY. SHIT. I don't know why I didn't pick up on this in the demo...but this is a complete re-tooling of the swing mechanic, which is of course what the entire game revolves around. Percentage shots are gone, and replaced by the "total swing mechanic". I'll admit, my first round I fucking hated this system...so much so that I considered going back to Gamestop not ten minutes after I bought this and getting my Tiger Woods 12 back. But after a few rounds, I'm starting to come around. One thing that has me perplexed is that in TW12, I was a hooking/slicing mofo. Hitting the fairway was an accomplishment. In TW13, I began on Tour Pro difficulty, and have yet to miss a fairway. Seriously. It goes straight every time.

But as amazing as my drive and approach shots are, my close approach (within 20 yards) and putting were horrendous starting out. I'm having a really hard time locking down the tempo and overswing...and if you over-judge it, watch out.

I think I'll like the game in the end, and put a good amount of playing time into it, but I'm still not sure that TW12 won't be a more enjoyable game for me in the end.

Seriously I know the only time I'll play it is when I got buddies over and we're playing a 4 person match and I'll probably barely touch the single player or multi because I'd rather be out playing real golf.

I'll be honest, if I had rented the game beforehand...I would've just stuck with TW12. But that's not what I did, so I'll play this.

Anyway, if enough guys get this for 360, lemme know and we'll start up a country club.

the course thing is an annoyance to me, but not a gamekiller. the issue i had during the demo was the new swing system. i found that the only place it felt new to me was on the green because u no longer have a meter to judge distance.

on the any other shot i just judged like i always do and thats off of the max power of the club. But the greens didnt give u that max power number making it feel completely frustrating. The new system seemed pointless and like a half assed add on

Some guys on OS got the game early (season pass I guess), and said the same thing about the fairway shots. The impression I got was that even on the most difficult level, its nothing to shoot considerably under par.

The game is difficult, but for all the wrong reasons. I have no issues if my I'm slicing/hooking, landing in bunkers and stuff, or trying a risky shot and ending in the water. But no, what happens is I have a PERFECT drive, then I might miss my approach shot just a bit and watch it roll off the green, like ten yards from the hole. This is where I get in trouble, because unless I severely underplay the power of the club, I will overshoot the green on the next five god damn shots.

I just don't know if I can enjoy this game long-term. I traded in a bunch of games and got TW13 for 15 bucks, and I'm strongly considering taking it back tomorrow and getting TW12 again. I dunno, guess we'll see. Sometimes I think it's not that bad, and then I five-putt on a green.

So I'm thinking what happened to me is that I never missed the green in the demo, so I never experienced the worst part of the game, which is the close approach shot.

I played about seven rounds of golf on the game yesterday, some with my brother online, some in the career...then I went and traded it back in today, got my TW12 back. I just came to the realization that my tempo would forever be fucked on this game. I can't teach myself how not to slam the stick forward on my downswing...I've been doing it forever! And I just didn't feel like I could enjoy the game in the long run.

So, if anyone wants to play a round on TW12, hit me up. Maybe we could get a few guys together, run a few tourneys or something.

I decided to bite the bullet and get TW13, after all. Glad I did.
Putting is a bitch in this game ... which is supposed to be the case.
That said, hitting the fairway off the tee is still way too easy.
Still building up my golfer in play now, so haven't even touched tourney play yet.

Installing the game to my 360 hard drive ... wow.

Coming off TW12 on the ps3, it's like night and day, the loading times between holes.

Still can't decide if I'm a fan of the new putting meter over TW12's. I guess I'll get used to it.

My best score so far, on tour pro, is +8, which isn't such a bad thing.

I just bought the collectors edition '360' from a guy at CAG for $45 (he made $10).

I can't wait to get it and try it out. I have heard good and bad about the game but I'll gladly see for myself at that price.
