I assume you mean Vernon Wells. That said, I wouldn't build teams with high-priced recruited talent. My Philadelphia Eagles proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that model doesn't work. I would do what the Yankee teams of the early Jeter days did ... build a base by spending like a mofo on scouting, farm system, etc...

Simply spending your way to titles rarely works.

That said, Vernon Davis is a helluva talent for the Niners.

A few years ago a fellow VSN member got laid off while we were all taking about playing the latest NCAA Football game. Said he couldn't justify buying the game because of his situation. He was a very popular poster at the time, I told him to send me his personal info. I Amazon gifted him the game. It wasn't charity. I said if you get back in a good position, just pay me back. There really is no insanity. Players(for the most part) get paid their fair market value, and it has only gone up as inflation has gone up. We are just starting to see $30M contracts, $50M isn't coming anytime soon.

But, again, I say the Angels have to be careful how they deal with Trout. This isn't a small market team dealing with Alex Rodriguez in the prime of his career. This is the Los Anaheim Angels of Los Angeles. They have to be careful how they deal with a clearly special talent. They can't simply keep baseball "franchise" him. That simply won't work. They have to make him happy.

That still doesn't help support any claims of $50 million. The team can make him happy with $25 million. If he asks for $50 million, no team is going to give him that. He knows it, his agent knows it, the teams know it.

Or it could be the massive local television contracts and team-run networks that are generating tons of money.

Making him happy also includes putting other good players around him so he can win championships. Can't do that if you pay him $50M per year, especially with the contracts they currently have with Pujols and Hamilton.
