Two Players to Start an NFL Franchise

Wait... the 26 yr old concussion prone QB is going to play 10 more years? And his weapons and team around him don't contribute to him being a great player right? We're talking about the same guy right?

Your building a franchise you want youth, somebody who you feel you can build a team around. You don't get the Panthers WR's and line with Cam Newton, and you don't get the Packers weapons and line with Aaron Rodgers. If I pick ONE player, homer or not it is Cam because he has everything that you can need and want out of a QB to help build your team around for the next 10-15 years. He really isn't even as raw as people say, I watch every game, he makes a lot of throws that leave the announcers and people shocked, and makes bad decisions too. You can work with that. With the right coaching Cam will be superb and have an incredible career. Let me stress "With the right coaching"

You're blinded by homerism. Aaron Rodgers is the best quarterback right now regardless of his weapons. He's got pinpoint accuracy. Cam Newton does not have everything you want in a QB. He makes stupid decisions, gets nervous in the pocket, and isn't all that accurate. Not to mention you can gameplan stop a running QB but if you got a guy who can sit in the pocket and make the throws, you can't stop it.

I've seen Cam play too and he isn't that special. He puts up big numbers but it isn't difficult to throw for 250 plus yards a game anymore. You taking Cam over Rodgers shows how stupid you are. I'll enjoy my QB picking apart defense for years to come, you can watch Cam Newton make the occasional big plays and watch him cost his team games as well while you would occasionally win 9 or 10 games and get that ass spanked in the playoffs.

On defense, you can have a few different choices and it still be a good choice. I obviously pick Patrick Willis

Bears , Ravens have remained consistently some of the best defenses in the league. MLB is the one constant.

Not saying Id pick MLB but its not a stupid choice.

I chose Willis because he's a rare player IMO. He has it all, speed, power, coverage skills, and he's a playmaker/difference maker. He's neck and neck with D. Ware IMO on how much he can fuck up an offensive game plan, but I like Willis more, so flip a coin there.

Aaron Rodgers, easily for offense. 27-year old franchise QB with at LEAST 10 good to great seasons ahead of him if he stays healthy. What more could you ask for?

Defense it gets much more difficult.. I'd probably pick Patrick Willis to anchor my D, Patrick Peterson would be a close 2nd.

Have to agree with Larry, MLB is not a position I would go with if I had my choice of any defensive player in the league.

Ex: Ravens didn't have Ray Lewis last Thursday but they looked pretty damn good since they got nine sacks, five from the Suggs/Ngata combination.

Give me a stud DE/OLB or DT any day over any other position on the defense. Cue the cliche "the NFL is a passing league" stuff, but it's true.

I can see taking Revis because he's such a rare, incredible player, but if you have a dominant DE/OLB, you can do fine with average CBs.

Ravens, Steelers, Tampa at the beginning of the decade, et al.

Yes, they all had great play by linebackers, but the defensive lines were also very strong...and its of my opinion the defensive line (along with QB and OL) are the building blocks of all teams.

I went with middle linebacker because, more often than not, that is the captain of your defense. Most defenses use either their MLB or a safety as the guy who is mic'ed for their DC.

As for Willis, the dude can do it all. Cover tight ends and running backs, stop the run and he's worked on his pass-rushing skills. He quite simply can do just about everything, and neutralize match ups that are head aches for most teams.
