This guy was the perfect mix for college football...just big enough to run over people, and just fast enough to score a TD on any play. He even returned kicks, too. He had a good NFL career, but nothing as spectacular as his college days. Michigan's offense was pretty basic, so Wheatley had to gain almost all of his yards on his own. In the video, its amazing how many times Wheatley can turn the corner on guys who have an angle on him.

I remember the ONLY game we ever left early was against Northwestern frosh year. He was getting some mop up time (before he was really splitting time with Ricky Powers), and we had the ball at our own 26. We were climbing up the stairs to leave; I swear, I turned around for a second, and he was gone for 74 yards.

He routinely ran guys over. Another game, we were playing MSU, and he had a 25 yard run straight up the gut from our own 24 to the 49. Back at the 35 was an MSU player that he just ran over who had to be helped off the field.

I was SO PUMPED when the Giants drafted him... then, ugh.

A friend of mine was on those early 90's Michigan teams, and everyone was at a loss as to why Gary Moeller would always play Ricky Powers instead of Wheatley. Powers was average at best, and Wheatley was the best player on the team.

Guy played a decade in the NFL. 6000 yard of total offense. 47 career touchdowns. Was even a good kick returner early in his career. Not a great, but I wouldn't call that a bust.

lol, a bust is a player that simply can not play in the league, or, by defition a "A failure; a flop"...Wheatley could certainly play in the league, and wasn't a failure.

Calling every player a bust that doesn't end up a stud is for the uneducated.

I remember this... IIRC Powers was this a huge get for Mich, and they did teverything they could to make that kid a star....and failed misberably...

You live in fantasy land. Maybe you expect a stud with a Top 5 pick, but @ pick #17? Nah. You want a guy that comes in and plays. Wheatley came in and played for a decade. Only played with two teams, too...so, journeyman?

Exactly.....though Eagle fans will continue to call Mike Mamula a bust. Wheatley had a pretty good two years, and as someone else pointed out, amassed over 6000 yards and 47 TDs. Mamula had 31.5 sacks in 77 games despite battling injuries through his time there.

Not a star, but hardly unproductive.

Definition of BUST - A failure...or flop.

When applying that to the NFL...it includes players that just straight up could not play the game. Not players that were productive and had longevity to their careers...not players that suffered career ending injuries...not players that just didn't have success with the team that drafted them...straight up, players that couldn't play.

Jamarcus Russell...Ryan Leaf...Bruce Pickens...Charles Rogers...R. Jay Soward.

Those fucks couldn't play...therefore...busts.
