VSN MLB SHOWDOWN: Volume 1

VSN MLB SHOWDOWN will pit two random players from the late 90s and early 2000s in a HEAD TO HEAD showdown. It's kind of like the baseball-reference EloRater, but on a much smaller scale.


edit - MvP will have to provide the actual SHOWDOWN ratings, so I will defer to him for all official rulings.

Two shortstops from the left coast, Bobby Crosby and Khalil Greene.

It's VERY close but I'll go with Crosby.

Unless there is some defensive metrics I am missing (and I am not on my computer so it's difficult to look these things up) I think I have to go with Greene. Essentially the same number of ABs for each player, but Greene had the higher average and slugging and more home runs, so unless Crosby is a much better defender, I'll go with Greene.

Good call on this thread. I remember when many thought these two were the future at shortstop. Things certainly change.

Green for sure. He was borderline "good" while Crosby was largely shit for a long time, rookie year notwithstanding.

I don't know about any metrics but I seem to remember Crosby making a ton of errors at SS, and generally being a kind of poor fielder. Apparently Greene was error prone too, in their rookie seasons Crosby had 19 and Greene 20. Field pct. has them both between .971 and .975 so I think it's a wash defensively.

But yeah this thread was inspired by an odd bit of trivia being found out last night in the chatbox, Khalil Greene is 10th on the all-time San Diego HR list despite only hitting 84 homers as a Padre. Given that he and Crosby had similar career paths (stud rookie > replacement level journeyman > out of baseball) I figured it was worth a comparison.

Fuck stats. I would always sign Crosby as a back-up IF in Show franchises and there would always be a stretch (thanks Reyes) where he'd be forced into the starting line-up for a week or two and he'd be productive.

10th on the home run list? Somehow I feel that is a giant :troll: from the Padres organization, but that is pathetic.

Went with Greene for this one. Wasn't really that close in my mind. Crosby was largely dogshit. Greene was a bit more serviceable.
