Washington Bravehearts, anyone?
A registration application for that name was received by the U.S Patent and Trademark Office on Oct. 17. The purpose, according to the application obtained by USA TODAY Sports, is "Entertainment in the nature of football games." The owner is listed as Washington Bravehearts LLC in Potomac, Md.
The NFL team in Washington said it has nothing to do with the application.
"There is no connection between the registering of this trademark and the Washington Redskins," said Tony Wyllie, senior vice president of the pro football club that has been under fire for its team name from a range of critics including the Oneida Indian Nation and newspaper columnists. Even the president of the United States said he'd think about changing the name if he owned the team.
Daniel Snyder, the team's owner, told USA TODAY Sports in May that he would never change the team's name. He wrote a letter to the team's fans this month in which he said he respected the opinions of those who are offended by the name but explained why he believes it should stay, based on its history and tradition and his childhood memories.
The attorney of record listed on the paperwork in the trademark filing is Donna J. Bunton of Nixon & Vanderhye in Arlington, Va. The woman who answered Bunton's phone said she is out of town and unavailable to speak.
