The three top choices are Stoops, Kelly, and Patterson, with my money on Kelly because he is the best coach and the most likely to take the job.

But I will throw out a name a lot of people might scoff at, but don't be surprised if his name turns up soon... Skip Holtz. He has the ND connection, he is a solid up and coming coach, and definitely is a defensive mind.

Agreed. Those are the only names I'm hearing right now with Stoops at the top of the list followed by Kelly then Patterson but it's a very close race between Kelly and Patterson.

If I had to put money on it I'd say it will end up being Kelly but honestly I don't think Notre Dame can go wrong with any of these three guys.

Davis could probably get 1/3 of those Miami players past the ND admissions board. Notre Dame isn't a Stanford or Northwestern when it comes to academic standards, but it definitely isn't "Da U" recruiting Willie Williams.

Academically, Butch Davis' recruits earned Miami recognition from the AFCA for outstanding graduation rates in each of his six years at Miami. Which of course can be taken with a grain of salt considering it's a Coaches Association, but he wasn't recruiting straight dumb dumbs.

Davis' recruiting at UNC has been fairly good, but its not like he's pulling in Lawrence Taylors every year.

While true, it's also UNC. The University of Miami is one of those "hype" colleges. Where everyone wants to go for football. UNC is a basketball school, no matter which way you cut it. Tobacco Road belongs to basketball. I think Butch could do very well for himself at Notre Dame as well as restore a little luster back into the program.

Other then the usual "Michigan Sucks, what can they do?" response I'd normally give here. This counter argument was something I didn't think of. It would be the biggest hurdle for Butch, and probably the straw that could break the camels back. As well as what kind of time frame the Boosters and University want success. Anybody going to Notre Dame knows they'll have little time to produce results.

Another thing that I didn't think of, and could be another Butch Davis tie-in. If Stoops leaves Oklahoma, would Butch be inclined to return home?

Funnily enough, Williams was more than qualified academically. The chapter about him in "Cane Mutiny" by Bruce Feldman talks about how he had a solid SAT score and a 3.5 GPA, and it wasn't until the 11 arrests came to light that he had trouble getting through UM admissions.

Makes sense. I wouldn't want to lose him at ECU, he turned this program around from like having 3 wins in 2 years or something like that.

No school takes in more "dumb dumbs" to play football than Miami. Frank Gore could barely read when they took him in, and im pretty sure he's legally considered mentally retarded.

This is missing the point. The point is that at Notre Dame you can't get the players admitted into the school...it has nothing to do with graduation rates or the fact that Frank Gore overcame dyslexia. Good for Miami for getting their players to attend their Picture Pages classes, but thats not the issue.

I read a book called "Meat Market", which profiles a recruiting year for Ed Orgeron when he was the head coach at Ole Miss a few years ago. Aside from being completely bonkers, Orgeron would literally try to recruit guys already in jail and guys who never attended high school. It was insane.
