Werth Close to Deal With Nats

I know the Nats have a lot of money to spend, and I understand Werth is a very solid player...but is he worth $120 million?

He just isn't.

Career OPS+ of 122 has a career year at age 31 (145 OPS+). They have him signed until he's 38. Does anyone honestly believe Werth is still going to be an effective player into his late 30s?

Not a chance.

Not a great deal for the Nats, at all.

My only question is what happens when Bryce Harper is ready to come to the majors. Werth is going to make too much money to be moved so my only guess is that Willingham will be gone whenever Harper is big league ready and he'll play left field.

Willingham has already been in some trade talks... so who knows what happens to him. I personally like this signing by the Nats even though i don't like the Nats. He's about to get a million D batteries thrown at him when he returns to Philly.

It's absolutely a Soriano-esque deal. It almost mirrors it. Except the Cubs were solidly in WIN now mode and probably should've won the WS in 2008.

The Nats are 2-3 years away from being serious contenders...

While it may be a bad signing, it's a step in the right direction. It's a sign to the fan base here in DC that this team is willing to go out and increase payroll to make this team better. We're a leadoff man away from having a solid lineup in 2012 IMO. As of now the top leadoff man/CF prospect we have in the system is Boomer Whiting in Syracuse.

The problem is, it's not the market value for Werth. If you're the Yankees you can afford to pay well above market value. They outbidding themselves, plain and simple. Everything I've read the next best deal for Werth was the Red Sox for 4 years and the Nats go 7?!

You basically have to get the production he gave you this year (a career year at age 31) for the course of this deal to even remotely make it worth the $18 million per year he's getting.

The Nationals may be in a position 4-5 years down the line where Harper ends up being a bust, Strasburg is never healthy and 60% of their payroll budget is taken up by a sub 100 OPS+ corner outfielder. That's a very plausible situation and one that can really hurt a franchise.

I doubt he's going to be as good now he doesn't have Howard, Utley and the like around him...he was a late bloomer...this contract is horrific though.

Stat of the Century: Werth will receive more money ($126M) than all of the free agents the Nationals/Expos have signed COMBINED in the last 20 years ($122.1M).

My biggest gripe, is this throws the entire market into a whirl. Crawford should get $200M if we are paying on a Werth scale. I shudder on what it will take for the Reds to keep people like Bruce and Votto long term.

The Phills offered Werth 4yr/$66M. Who exactly were the Nats bidding against?

Seriously, fuck the Nats. I hope they win about 50 games.
