Werth Close to Deal With Nats

One of the worst contracts in the history of baseball. No hyperbole. One of the worst ever.

Stat of the Century: Werth will receive more money ($126M) than all of the free agents the Nationals/Expos have signed COMBINED in the last 20 years ($122.1M).

My biggest gripe, is this throws the entire market into a whirl. Crawford should get $200M if we are paying on a Werth scale. I shudder on what it will take for the Reds to keep people like Bruce and Votto long term.

The Phills offered Werth 4yr/$66M. Who exactly were the Nats bidding against?

Seriously, fuck the Nats. I hope they win about 50 games.

I lol'd. It's gonna get really messy with Crawford, he's gonna demand all that money and no team is gonna give it to him. He'll end up getting pissed off and accepting a lower contract and demand a better one after one year.

What a horrible contract. This doesn't help the Cardinals chances of signing Pujols this offseason. If a barely above average outfielder gets a contract worth $126 million, what's the market value for one of the greatest players of all time?

Werth is about 5 months older...comparable stats (Bay's 2010 was a joke)...Werth gets 7 years, $126 million (he'll be 38 in the final year of the deal)...Bay now has a 3 year deal worth $48 mil (plus a team option/buy out fourth year).

This deal has screwed up a lot of potential deals this winter. I can't believe Werth actually got the money, I am happy for him, but man did the Nats over-pay. Funny I think Jayson Stark mentioned, that the Nats were bought for $120 million or something in 2002, now they just spent $126 million on one player, lol.

Another annoying aspect is that the Phils can't even take full advantage of the compensatory pick, because they won't get the Nats' 3rd overall pick, they will get a supplemental pick.
