There's this stupid unwritten rule in NY sports that the fans won't tolerate rebuilding. Bullshit - fans will tolerate rebuilding if they see a plan and the team is playing hard. But ever since they won the title in '73, the Knicks have been trying that rebuilding-on-the-fly shit, signing veterans past their prime(Spencer Haywood, Larry Johnson) to phat contracts hoping to sneak into the playoffs(and raise ticket prices). That is the road to mediocrity. Thank goodness we got lucky with Ewing, otherwise Knick history would really be woeful.
There are two ways to become a perennial contender(50+ wins, get to the 2nd round of the playoffs) - a) draft a franchise player and build around him, or b) get under the cap, sign top flight free agents and build around them. Walsh is thinking long-term with Plan B.
...and remember, Knicks don't have a draft pick next season thanks to the Curry trade. Isiah really fixed our wagon, didn't he? That's the mess Walsh has to deal with.
