You spelled Sandlot wrong.
Raging Bull is amazing, but I don't think I've ever felt the connection to a character in a sports movie similar to Agee and William Gates. When the Arthur's mom is reading the Valentine's Day letter, or when he sees his dad buying crack during a pick up game, William's first visit to get an MRI or when he's sidelined during the Top 100 camp, the shit is poignant.

Yeah it's obviously one of the more emotionally investing sports films ever made, but it has kind of an unfair advantage to scripted drama. (Unfair is probably the wrong word to use here, but anyway, we agree that Hoop Dreams is fucking awesome.)

Lefty not enjoying Hoop Dreams is pretty disappointing. I liked Blue Chips a lot too even if it was just a basketball version of The Program, which I also enjoyed, and a little cartoony in its portrayal of the college game. Any Given Sunday was the same way with pro football but I still really liked it too.
Friday Night Lights and Remember the Titans are a couple of my favorite sports movies ever. But the best sports movie I've ever seen was about that high school football team from Memphis called Undefeated.

As others have said, not only is this the greatest basketball movie ever created, it's one of the best documentaries... ever.

To every single person in this thread who didnt pick Baseball.
I think objectively speaking you'd have to say boxing. Million dollar baby , Rocky 1-2, Raging Bull , The Fighter , When We were Kings , Ali (?) etc have all won Oscars or received Oscar nods. So the "best" movies are likely from Boxing.
For me its baseball hands down. No sport movies seem to make a realistic portrayal of the sport , and can insert the level of nostalgia the way baseball does. Can anyone watch the sandlot , field of dreams , or even league of there own and not *sigh* at least once about missing your youth ?
Football even the good ones just exaggerate the fuck out of everything. Something about the camera work is simply never right. Closest was Jerry Maguire cutting to actual MNF footage.

Usually it's too close and the cuts are too tight. Football is best viewed from a wide angle so you can see the movement of the line, but most football movies will stage their shots with really close ups of players running in place, or really unnatural looking and over the top tackles.
I want to say Varsity Blues and the original Longest Yard did it the best, but for the most part the action in football movies doesn't look like actual football.
Not to mention AIR BUD!
Wow. First time I've ever heard this about "Hoop Dreams." I can honestly say I've never heard a bad word about it before now.
I'd even argue that Basketball Diaries has nothing at all to do with basketball.
TBH, I just lump these in with boxing movies. As the actual sport of boxing moves farther away from our collective conscience, so will boxing movies. MMA flicks will step in to fill the void. We already have our first classic, imho, with "Warrior."
