Christ this is as stupid as when ESPN decided it had the right to crown a new Titletown.

Dallas is America's Team. Always has been, always will be.

And Fuck You ESPN, Green Bay is Titletown. Always has been, always will be.

It's completely idiotic.

Green Bay's won 1 title in the last 40 years.

But they will ALWAYS be Titletown.

It's like the Baltimore Ravens defense calling themselves the Steel Curtain.

I don't care how or why they get the nicknames. Once they have them and they are established they are there for good.

I can't express how angry I was about the Titletown thing on ESPN. If I wasn't permanently banned from MM I'm sure I could find some ranting in the threads about the competition in there.

Thankfully no one is dumb enough to go with what ESPN does.

I think that's probably an exception I guess. Best Team is a term thrown around too much to become a nickname or part of a nickname really.

Not sure I'm explaining that correctly. For instance, there was no Titletown, at least not well known in the public, until Green Bay got the nickname. Same with America's Team. Its not like people walked around and called teams America's Team left and right. It wasn't a well known term until it became synonymous with the Cowboys.

Someone gets called best team like every year so that kinda loses its luster and its ability to be a nickname.

As much as it pains me to say, the Steelers are the greatest right now and possibly the greatest of all time. 6 Super Bowls. This is the "What have you done for me lately" league, not the "What once was" league and that's why the Cowboys and Packers are not in contention. The Patriots are hated by most people who aren't Patriots fans. Their fans are also very stuck-up. Granted, they were a dynasty, but that time has gone. They won three Super Bowls in four years and the Steelers have won two in the same span, but the Steelers won most recently.

Granted, I don't like the Steelers, but they're a blue-collar team and they have a guy from USC (one of the best at his position) on their team... [size=-7]and a black head coach...[/size]

Also, the Steelers do need their own nickname, though. That stuff in the '70s was classic and let's return to that. How 'bout they're just "The Steel Curtain". Pittsburgh can be "The City of Champions" and the Steelers can be "The Best Ever" or something... but let's leave-alone "Titletown" and "America's Team." (and "Steeler Nation"... that shit's just classless. lol)

The Bears used to be IMO up until the 70's and the suckfest of a decade they had.

Honestly IMO year in and year out the Bears have a pretty damn strong country wide fan base. I'm not saying they are America's Team but they are up there for sure. I'd argue perhaps as high #2.

Exactly. Dallas' is obviousyl "America's Team" or whatever because they branded themselves as such but as far as a fanbase reaching all over the country the Bears are up there year in and year out. Can't really say for the Steelers.

Bob Ryan, the Vice President and editor-in-chief of NFL Films, coined this for the Cowboys in 1979. After preparing and editing the team’s 1978 season highlight film he had to come up with a title for the film. [6] He was quoted as saying:

I wanted to come up with a different twist on their team highlight film. I noticed then, and had noticed earlier, that wherever the Cowboys played, you saw people in the stands with Cowboys jerseys and hats and pennants. Plus, they were always the national game on television.

During the Cowboys' first game of the 1979 season, a nationally televised game against the St. Louis Cardinals (which Dallas won 22-21), the television announcer for CBS introduced the Cowboys as America’s Team and the name stuck.

Dallas's Hall of Fame coach Tom Landry originally did not approve of the appellation of America's Team. He felt that it would give opposing teams extra incentive to play harder. Eventually he gave in and actually came to like the name.[7]
