In college sports I've always had a hard time rooting for a school that I didn't attend, so I'd have to say my favorite program is Hampton University. However, I tend to root for specific players that I know or who are from my area.

I love watching most college basketball though. Im a different breed of UK fan i guess I have no problem with Duke, UNC, Kansas, etc. The only team i hate is Louisville.

I'm not one of those one school in football, one school in basketball type deals.

So my b-ball team is Georgia.

I rooted for Drake hardcore two years ago when they were actually good because I live in Des Moines, Iowa. But thats about it.

I would agree with that....

but....

Notre Dame is first and foremost. Illinois I have just watched my whole life because they are always on here locally when I was a kid. The first Illinois player I really remember liking a lot was Kiwane Garris back in like 1994.

I think the problem with Notre Dame basketball is that up until about the last 7-8 years they were very tough to follow if you didn't live in the South Bend area. Very few televised games, etc. When they joined the Big East in 1995(and started getting better at the start of this decade) all that changed and more Notre Dame fans could follow more games and see them play more often as ESPN, etc would cover more of their games. Honestly, I don't recall watching a ton of Notre Dame basketball until Troy Murphy got there in the late 90's early 2000's.

That's why I don't understand how people root for schools that they never attended. How do you root for the football team, but not the basketball team? Or the basketball team and not the football team? College sports is as much about the school as it is the program. IMO its even worse when guys attend(ed) a particualr school, but still declare another school as their favorite, which is generally guys who live close to major college programs, but attend smaller schools in the area.

I was born in the state of Kentucky and my whole family on my mother's side are Kentucky fans. Actually born in the city of Louisville and I was brainwashed early on that anyone who cheers for Louisville is a despicable person,lol. If my 71 year old grandmother gets cut off in traffic or somebody does something rude her first instinct to say is "must be a Louisville fan" lmao

I go to a very small school that doesnt even have a football team. I, like many others, cheer for the team our family traditionally has followed. Every man and woman on my mother's side of the family is serious about kentucky basketball, the majority are serious about Kentucky football as well.

I don’t have issues with people in your situation, because you obviously root for the school’s athletic program as whole and not just the successful ones. However, if your school's basketball programs sucks and you run around saying they suck, so you don't support them, but then if the team started to become successful and you all of a sudden became a fan I'd have issues. I work with a guy who grew up in West Virginia and his favorite teams are Duke Basketball and Florida State Football, but he doesn’t watch FSU Football anymore (I wonder why?). These people annoy me.

In my view it comes down to one thing....either you are a fan/supporter of a school or you are not, because college sports is about the school and not the specific programs. I am a fan of Hampton University's athletic program, not the successful sports programs.

There's a ton of people here in Indiana that are (were) IU Basketball fans and ND football fans. I understand a little bit with ND football cause of what Firsttimer said but there's too many combo fans running around.

I couldn't get into Notre Dame sadly enough..... But I was raised watching the football team and following the school. My grandpa went there(and actually played basketball there in the late 40's) and I was Irish Catholic and grew up in the midwest...what other school was I going to follow?

It's not as simple as "if you didn't go the school how can you root for them"? People have relatives that go/went to the school, it was always the team on in the house and just because they didn't go to the school, which could have been for a variety of reasons, doesn't mean they can't root for them. Hell I went to NIU for 3 semesters and when I was there I could have given a flying fuck about their athletic programs. I went to some football games, tailgated, enjoyed myself. My freshman year was the year NIU beat Maryland and Alabama and went like 10-3, so it was fun but I was skipping NIU Homecomings to go to Notre Dame games and never once watched an NIU basketball game even though I could have gotten in for free. I already had my allegiances.

I see your point about picking and choosing programs to follow in certain sports but to each his own I suppose. I personally try best I can to follow all of Notre Dames sports. Heck the #1 thing on my Xmas wish list this year is a Notre Dame hockey jersey.
