For the sake of a fun thread....Ill say...This is entirely dependent on how theyve been covering my back out of the backfield , if I have an elite WR , and if my punter can coffin corner kick.

Theyve likely been protecting the outside and allowing my TE some breathing room. But at 4th and 5 they will squat down looking for slants and drag routes. I will line up in Shotgun and call a draw play.I instruct my QB if he spots man coverage or the FS moves up Im going deep to Bob OchoSiete on a slant and go. If they are playing soft and he doesnt like underneath matchups he pulls a doug flutie and surprise punts it himself like we did in practice since June for JUST this situation.

Im only down by 4. Ill trust my D will give up a ton but theyll want to run down clock and go for an easy FG. I havent wasted any timeouts. So Ill get the ball back with under a minute which means we can score with ease if things go right.

I would punt, because even converting the 4th down still wouldn't get you into FG range, really. And you are down by 4, so a FG would kind of help but it wouldn't tie the game.

On a side note, I never understand why teams go for it on 4th and short inside the 30 (unless they are at the goal-line), because most of the time even when the offense converts the 1st down they still end up kicking the FG anyway.

I like the in depth analysis. Have to be honest, though, there's nothing I hate more than a 3rd or 4th and long draw play from the shotgun. I don't know what the stats are on this, but in whatever games I'm watching it almost never works. Like I said, I'd punt but if I did decide to go for it I'd call a pass play and either through intitial formation or motion try to dictate a favorable match-up for my TE or slot receiver then have my QB looking for those other things.

I actually agree with you, but let me play devil's advocate. If you're inside the 30, but close to it, is going for it here worth it even if it only means getting a 30 to 35 yard fg attempt a few plays later as opposed to going ahead and trying a fg from 40 to 45 yards?

I don't think your odds are increased that much when differentiating between a 35 yd FG and a 45 yd FG, to be honest. I think you'd have a greater chance of not converting the 4th down and coming away with zero points and giving your opponent decent field position.

But if you aren't going to stop them in 4 or 8 downs, you're most likely going to run out of time anyways...a team can kill the clock on you with just 60 yards to work with.

Maybe you are thinking of Canadian Football where they have 3 downs instead of 4?

No matter how good my defense is I trust them more to hold the opponent to a FG or less if I give them the ball with 80 or more yards between them and the endzone as opposed to giving it to them with 60 yards or less. And don't forget I have all 3 timeouts. Even if I don't force a three and out, I still have a better shot at getting the ball back with it still a one possession game if I punt it away than if I go for it and fail.

Is your QB agile enough to get 5 yards on a run when it's needed? How good is the matchup between your 3rd receiver versus their nickel/dime back? How good is your punter at coffin kicks?

Give me a punter that will kick it OOB or super high inside the 10, and I'll punt. Otherwise, I'm going for it in this situation, without knowing the other info.

You have timeouts so you have a set of downs to burn so to speak. We'd need to know more about the opponent but they are going to play the clock. They score a TD early after possession change and the game isn't over, they need to play for the clock.

I'm not thinking of CFL? 3 sets of downs = 9 plays max. If you get to the 4th down, then you get the ball back and have another shot so why include that? I guess you could hit 10 if it were to happen on the 3rd set of downs in that scenario.

A TD will kill you, but in hindsight not if it happens right away. We're also talking about an "average team" which implies an "average punter", no guarantee he's not gonna put it in the endzone making it waste.

This is where we part ways. A TD "right away" doesn't end the game but now you're down two scores south of 5 minutes to go. I think my chance of getting 5 yards on 4th down is a good deal less than my chance of keeping my opponent from going 80+ yards for a TD, or running the clock out. So playing the percentages I punt.

Not a canned phrase:

Also, I don't think you can be absolutely sure that a team with a 4 point lead and almost 5 minutes left isn't going to try and score a TD. After all, they also know that a TD kills you.

2. 5 minutes is plenty of time, and 4th and 5 is no gimme. I would punt and stop their offense.
