I assume you have the same thoughts on people caught texting and driving because statistics are starting to indicate that texting and driving is 6 times more dangerous than driving while intoxicated.

I think it's completely hypocritical for so many people to crucify others for driving drunk but don't have as strong feelings for those who text and drive. The punishment for texting and driving is a small ticket compared to the punishment for drunk driving.

And then I see idiots everywhere bitching and moaning about a $20 ticket for texting and driving (first offense, every offense after is $50) in California when the penalty for DUI costs at least $2k and possibly up to $5k with lawyer fees.

It's quite a joke really.

I've gotten 1 and learned my lesson, thankful I didn't hurt anyone else or myself.

People don't realize how easy it is to get a DUI. If you go out to dinner and have 2 glasses of wine you can be over the limit.

Obviously, Gallardo was hammered as he was 3 times over the limit. Hopefully he learns his lesson and doesn't drive drunk again.

My brother, who is now a drug and alcohol addiction counselor, got two DUIs before he turned 21. My sister has two as well. I’m the only one of the three of us not to get one and that’s through sheer luck. Three years ago I got pulled over leaving my Marine Corps Birthday Ball and blew a .18. The cop let me off with a warning because I was 2 blocks from my house and I was in my military dress uniform on Veterans Day. Have never drank and drove since and now I don’t even drink.

I was .12 when I got mine and legitimately shocked when they told me. Before that there were plenty of times where had I been caught it would have been much much worse.

But yeah you learn your lesson after your first one or you're an idiot. Maybe it's different in other states where the penalties aren't as stiff but taking away someone's liscense for 6 months, 30 day jail sentence (replaceable by fine), impound fees, 10 years of summary probation, driving school every week for 6 months at $600+ and whatever else a county wants to attach (I had to go to a MADD lecture) in California should be enough to convince anyone how much another one of these could wreck your life.

And LOL @ mister fiscal conservative gooby looking to send first time, non-accident DUIs and texters to prison. Replacing the income generated from fines to increased spending to house all these people is a great plan.

I see your point but I don't know if I completely agree.

A lot of people always want to compare professional athletes to employees in other occupations. In this situation, an employee is rarely ever fired or punished by the employer for DUI (unless they have to report it to the company or have a job that involves driving). Most employers never find out when an employee gets a DUI.

We only know here because it involves a professional athlete. I guess I'm just not of the opinion that athletes should be held to a higher standard because I don't think they are intelligent enough to be held to that standard. They should be treated equally to all other citizens / employees, IMHO.

Well, I'm not trying to hold Gallardo to a higher standard because he's an athlete. As of right now, the way I'm viewing DUI versus PEDs as, "What's worse?"

I don't see the logic where MLB will suspend a guy for 50 games for marijuana or prenatal hormone pills, and then not even cause Gallardo to miss a start due to this DUI. What's the worse that can happen from steroid use? Roid rage and he's good at baseball? Testicular cancer or other health issues someday?

And just some perspective on the "holding him more accountable than others" argument: if I have a DUI, there's a very good chance that I wouldn't be allowed to sit for the national board examinations that I'll need to take for radiology in 2 years. That's not a California versus Wisconsin thing. This dude isn't going to be docked a penny from his pay check and I could potentially lose my chance at a career in healthcare - essentially rendering all my previous schooling a waste of time and money.

An ounce of cocaine is a felony. Comparing an ounce of cocaine to a DUI is stupid.

The punishment for DUI and marijuana are stiffer than DUI in the MLB's regard because they were becoming an epidemic and affecting baseball. Also factor in that the justice system rarely ever catches or punishes people for taking steroids or smoking marijuana and you have the MLB's reasoning.

When the justice system stops punishing people for driving drunk and it becomes an MLB epidemic you will see the MLB suspend drunk drivers for 100 games.

For the record, I don't think sports should punish for marijuana or adderall but they aren't going to go back on it.

Like I said, I do think the MLB should institute a punishment for DUI but not more than 50 games. I agree that the MLB and the NFL should reevaluate their stance on substance abuse punishments but they're not going to lessen any of them. I think DUI will be punished by the MLB within the next 5 years...probably even sooner.

Guess what, they don't occur on the baseball field. The results of PED use play out on the field. One falls under the obvious jurisdiction of the MLB, the other occurs within the jurisdiction of whatever law agency arrests the player.

Well in regards to that, they failed a MLB sponsored drug test. MLB doesn't pull over these guys for DUI.
