The punishment for DUI and marijuana are stiffer than DUI in the MLB's regard because they were becoming an epidemic and affecting baseball. Also factor in that the justice system rarely ever catches or punishes people for taking steroids or smoking marijuana and you have the MLB's reasoning.

When the justice system stops punishing people for driving drunk and it becomes an MLB epidemic you will see the MLB suspend drunk drivers for 100 games.

MLB has it's substance abuse suspension policies way out of wack. In my opinion, getting caught driving drunk is way worse than getting caught with a gram of weed in your bat bag. MLB gives zero reprimand for the DUI and makes you miss almost half of a season for weed. It's laughable that Gallardo didn't even miss a start.

I'll say it again, MLB needs to reevaluate its priorities if it's going to be suspending players for substance abuse.

If you get caught by MLB on a MLB sponsored drug test they should have the right to punish you. If you get caught by anyone else it should be outside of their jurisdiction.

The line has already been drawn.

You can't test for alcohol use on a daily basis (you could but let's be realistic about this). It is in and out of the system much faster than marijuana and it's a complete waste of time and money to start testing players before games for alcohol. It also undoubtedly slows down reaction time and coordination. It's also not illegal.

Like I said...common sense. No need for the MLB to try and take on more than they can chew at this point. Steroids are the main issue and other illegal drugs are already banned. Just leave it at that. Let's not try to reinvent the wheel when it comes to drug testing and athletics when it's really not much of an issue. The rules in place are fine for the most part.
