how is it based on dice rolls? you aim, you shoot...there is no turn based action at all
i dont disagree that the gameplay action is not so good compared to ME2, but the game overall is great and provides a much more varied story than ME2
ME2 was nothing more than companion missions. Do a mission to find the companion, then do a mission to make the companion your friend....repeat that about 10 times then complete the main quest
And we'll just have to agree to disagree about the story. Particularly your somewhat dense way of breaking it down. The story was about Shepherd building a team of elites for his mission. Why penalize it for that? ME1 had a great story as far as tracking down Saren, but it's dogshit side quests were extremely sub par and it's locales outside of the Citadel left a lot to be desired.
I guess it's just me, I found very little at fault with ME2 and while I loved ME1, it has a lot of problems that they thankfully learned from with 2.Comment

None of which were worse than the lunar landing missions. How many times could they rehash the same buildings is beyond my comprehension.Comment

Dice rolls =/= turn based. ME2 is aim and shoot. ME1 you have to improve your specific gun ability to improve your aim/effectiveness with that gun. You can have the aiming reticule rested squarely on an enemy, shoot, and miss. It's like Alpha Protocol in that respect (although not as punishing as Alpha Protocol).
im am not arguing at all that 1 was better than 2. ME2 was way better and alot more fun. I just hope ME3 stories have more variety than the cookie cutter companion stories. they were not bad, but they were all structured the same way. they needed to mix it up...throw in some surprises. It was very predictableComment

Hearing about all that shit in ME1 really turned me off and I basically had no interest in it. ME2 seems like a lot more up my alley though.
The fact that the PS3 release reduces ME1 to a digital comic and gets me right into what many say is the better game, plus (almost) all of the DLC, it seems perfect for me.Comment

Just another reason why I really have no interest to check out ME1 and makes me feel even more confident in my decision to start with ME2.
i just think your description was wrong. calling it a dice roll is misleading and unfair. dice roll makes it seem random when in fact its based on your character build and leveling up skills. how was that any different than ME2? the only difference was they built it into the the character build...as an adept i automatically had the ability to use certain weapons cause they chose to streamline, or dumbdown the rpg aspects and build it right into your chosen class
That would be beyond frustrating to me.Comment

Interestingly enough, this threas is the first I'm hearing of all these repeated "dungeons" or areas. That seems like another HUGE knock for ME1. Dragon Age 2 caught tons of flak for that same shit and rightfully so.

It has been a while since I played ME1, and it was right before ME2 came out, so I can't speak 100% for it, but some of the repetitive dungeons are on the side missions, like the lunar ones, so you can really skip them and play through the main story. Obviously, if you don't like how the guns are leveled, that is another thing entirely, but I think playing the main story is definitely worth it.
There were a few cool missions like the one where you dock the disabled ship, but otherwise meh.
Have to say reading the past couple pages, especially that article about Chobot, is super depressing.
Then again, I called it ages ago, the demise of Bioware is complete when this game releases. It'll be pretty good, lack some polish but won't meet the expectations fans from the beginning expect and deserve.
I suspect this is my final Bioware purchase, I've always been a massive fan of their work since the mid 90's PC games they made, but EA is cancer to game studios...it always goes this way. Star Wars will not deliver financially and it'll hurt future Bioware projects, no doubt about it.Comment

Yeah that side stuff can easily be skipped for the most part.

There's actually quite a few of those missions. One where the ship is taken over by Husks, one taken over by pirates and another by biotics. All using the same looking ship

Would be cool to have a co-op session on the go. Played through a game of NWN2 last fall with guys on another forum, it was pretty fun.
Was considering playing IWD2 again too...Comment

All this talk about ME1 is depressing. Twigg, you have to remember that all of the recollections here about the first game are the way they are because of the existence of a second game.
Without ME2, ME1 is a damn fine game with a really great story. You'd be missing a lot by just going through a dumb little comic. Considering you haven't played ME2 yet, I see no reason why you can't play ME1. Sure, it's frustrating at times, but what game isn't? Without a proper frame of reference, it will still be a fun game.
And if you're worried about the dice-roll mechanics of the shooting, be a Soldier or an Adept. You don't need to ever fire a gun yourself to be successful because of your squadmates.Comment

There were a lot of great things about ME1 that changed dramatically in ME2. I contend that they're both fantastic games, but ME2 was just far more polished and had a greater variation in environments.Comment
