Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
Platform: SNES
A lot of you are probably saying, how is it even possible that I have this in front of The Original Super Mario Bros? Well I can honestly say that I enjoyed everything about this game way more than I did about SMB.
Yoshi’s Island, as I’ll refer to it from now on, is the first game in the Super Mario timeline. The whole plot begins with this big ass stork flying across the screen and this bastard wizard koopa troopa steals Luigi but Mario proceeds to careen towards the ground. He falls and hit’s Yoshi, but this is Yoshi’s island so that means everyone is Yoshi right? Anyway Yoshi and his merry men have to make it through numerous worlds and levels to save Luigi. Let me tell you one thing about Yoshi’s Island. The art direction in this game is seriously the best I have ever seen in a game. I’m not talking about nice graphics but the backgrounds and every sprite on the screen is colorful and just gives way to a very fun atmosphere. The worlds were so diverse too, it almost like after you finished one world you moved onto a whole new game in the next. The one thing I truly loved about this game, almost more than the art direction was The Boss Battles. From the first castle you play in to the last has these larger than life bosses. One time it’s a clown in a flour pot, a guy who loses his pants or any other crazy boss they can throw at you. How you get past each boss and through each level is the fun part. Yoshi carries Baby Mario on his back the entire time along with a trail of eggs. You can get more eggs by eating enemies. If Yoshi is hit Mario will float off in a bubble and a timer will start. If you cannot pop the bubble within time you will lose and Mario will be carried off by a koopa troopa. The screaming and crying of Mario will make you want to get him back as fast as possible. The basic attacks you have with Yoshi are the ability to jump on enemies, eat them or shoot eggs. Shooting eggs was a great concept that really caught me by surprise when I first played the game. The soundtrack is another strong point of this game as well. In my opinion it is a perfect mix of the Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 2 soundtracks. By that I mean the songs sounded like they were half recorded thinking of each game. The story, as I alluded to way earlier, is one of the best in a Mario Bros. game. It was a shame that it came out so late in the Super Nintendo’s lifecycle. The game does take a long time to beat. You probably won’t finish it in one sitting unless you have a lot of free time on your hands. It has a progressing level of difficulty as well which is standard in the Mario universe. Jumps, enemies and just about everything gets harder as the game goes on and you’ll probably fall victim to losing a life or two before the game is over. One last thing, the final battle in this game is in my opinion the best battle in a mario game of all time.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island is one of my favorite SNES games of all time. The Super Nintendo is probably my favorite console of all time as well, as you’ll begin to notice as my list winds down. This game really doesn’t get the credit it deserves and its too bad because it is one amazing looking and playing games. If you don’t know about this game, passed it over or just never played it and wanted to, watch the video below.

Donkey Kong Country
Platform: SNES
What a surprise! A Super Nintendo game makes the list yet again. Sorry guys, as I stated before the SNES was my favorite system and it molded me into the gamer I am today. Anyway, Donkey Kong Country was one of the most revolutionary games on the SNES. Forget Star Fox and any other game that gave you archaic 3-D but as far as Characters and levels, everything in Donkey Kong Country looks like its shaded and popping out.
The whole point of Donkey Kong Country is to traverse through all the levels and take back the big banana horde from King K Rool, the leader of the Kremlings. Donkey Kong is the aptly named main character but he doesn’t have to do this whole journey alone. He is aided by Diddy Kong, his agile nephew. Donkey Kong is stronger and has a slamming attack on the ground while Diddy is faster and can jump further and has a goofy cartwheel attack. I usually tagged in and out depending on how much jumping was needed in the level. The duo also has Cranky Kong, who provides you with jokes and hints if you get stuck, Candy Kong, who is who you go to for saving your game and finally Funky Kong, who will transport you to the next set of levels after you beat the end boss of each part. In the first level, Kongo Jungle, you get introduced to the game in a very simple manor. You get a basic platforming level and as it goes on it gives you a taste of everything. Just like in every platforming game you get stuck with a water level but at least in Donkey Kong Country you get a swordfish to attack enemies. Cause if either Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong get hit they’re dead. Fortunately the game isn’t too difficult. You get plenty of bananas to collect so you can get an extra life or two, checkpoint barrels are plentiful as well so even if you die you can start there again and extra life balloons can be found as well. All in all its an easy game but can be frustrating at times. The end bosses aren’t too difficult if you can get their patterns down. Other than that the game is somewhat long, I mean if you’re really dedicated you could probably beat the game in 4-5 hours but at the risk of getting burnt out. I mean the game isn’t repetitive but playing over and over, especially a platformer, would get monotonous. This game is really diverse. I mean that as in differing levels and a variety of gameplay but when you go from an extremely fun level like riding in a minecart to just jumping and avoiding getting hit by coconuts kinda sucks.
Graphically I think this is the best looking game on the SNES. Sure they did sequels but none of them looked any worse or better than this game. This was the first game to use a technique that pre rendered everything in 3D and put it on a 2D plain. The end result was pure beauty. The trees looked great, water looked real enough for a 16 bit system and just everything from the characters moving to the backgrounds looked fantastic. The sound was also very well done. The jungle themed soundtrack for the jungle levels to a more techno for the caves was great and a nice touch. You forget how much sound does for a game when you don’t listen to it. Character chatter and just everything you hear in this game is just top notch and one of the Super Nintendo’s crown jewels.
I can honestly say the majority of you guys have at least played a level or two of this game and don’t need me to tell you to play it so just watch the video and enjoy.

I don't know what it is but that game never sucked me in like other SMB games. I've tried playing through it several times and just get bored after a while.
I think I can honestly say that Super Mario Land 3D might be the best SMB game I've ever played.Comment

Tetris
Platform: NES
Yes I’m specifically talking about the one on the Nintendo. All other versions suck in comparison to this game. A simple puzzle game at first but as it progresses it gets faster. This kind of fast paced puzzle game took not only Russia but The United State by storm.
Tetris was a game originated in Russia and exported here. It’s a puzzle game that can be extremely addicting at times and usually gave my 6 year old self a reason to sit in front of the tv for an hour. The object of the game is to get as many points as you can by stacking blocks called tetronimos. I always just refer to this as blocks. Like the square block, long block and so forth and so on. Anyway, the game is endless so there is no final stage to try to beat. The goal is simply to just stack the blocks and clearing the lines. But if you end up messing up and not being able to keep the blocks from stacking all the way to the top of the screen you will lose. Trust me it gets hectic on some of the later levels and you just can't keep up. When you first start the game it is going slow and a good time to get your bearings straight. The music is also a factor in the game. At the earlier stages the music is slow but as you progress it gets faster and for some reason always put added pressure on me. The reason I like the NES version is the goofy cut scenes of the spaceships blasting off. I don’t know why I enjoyed that so much, maybe it gave me a sense of self accomplishment. There isn’t a whole lot to talk about for this ranking because the game is so damn simple. So instead I’ll rant about one thing that pisses me off so bad about Tetris. You are having a great game and you’re stacking blocks and you end up with this big ass valley. You starting to hope you get a long block. Numerous blocks continue to fall all of which being the square or those annoying s shaped ones. At this point I get really frustrated and plug the valley with a different block just so I have more room. Wouldn’t you know it? The long block comes like 3 blocks later. That shit used to drive me absolutely nuts. Although I’ve played tetris on my computer or phone its not the same as sitting there when I was a kid playing on my console tv and just having fun.
This is one of the goofy scenes i'm talking about.
I apologize that this is short but it’s Tetris. Everyone has played Tetris. Watch the video.

Final Fantasy VII
Platform: Playstation
This game is called the greatest RPGs of all time by many critics. I can’t arguer it’s greatness but I can say on my list it is not the greatest. Sure this game was pretty damn groundbreaking when it came out but through refineries to gameplay there are a lot of better RPGs out there since this game was created. You can’t argue the nostalgia factor because this game is a mainstay in many gamers memories due to it being one of the greatest games of their childhood.
Final Fantasy 7 is a classic RPG at its roots but has a facelift to show gamers that they were part of that generation of consoles. This game came out 15 years ago and still looks halfway decent for a game of that age. Basically Final Fantasy is a lot like all the previous Final Fantasy games. You have an overworld where you can travel to different towns and locations. Traveling in wooded areas, along beaches or even just in the grass can grant you a random battle with any sort of enemy. When you battle you come into a different screens with your basic commands such as Attack, Magic, Summon or item. You could also run if you wanted but you’d be missing out on some experience. The battles played out very well. Graphically for a Playstation game, they looked great. If you used an attack you got to see Cloud attack by swinging his sword. If you used magic the magic looked like what you were casting be it fire, thunder or any other spell. Summoning would bring forth various allies such as Ifrit or numerous others. It all looked very well and showed us how serious Square was by taking something as tedious as battling and made it at least look good. Of course if you are taking an ass beating and you get to low health you have the opportunity to pull off a Limit Break. A limit break is a desperation attack that is usually a chain of attacks that deal heavy damage. Aura is a spell that can give you the Limit Break without having to be low and XP and I always had that spell stocked. As well as all that fun stuff, the game had a lot of side quests. Not to the level of Skyrim or Oblivion but it had numerous quests that can at least extend the life of the game by a few more hours. This game is long to begin with but those sidequests give you a reason to really experience the whole game because although some of them are of no importance to the story, they are still epic.
The whole setting of Final Fantasy 7 is this Techno-Industrial not too distant future vibe. The planet is not earth but rather “Gaia”. The world has a few continents that you can travel between each town and important location as you progress through the story. It’s a pretty large world full of many secrets which is amazing for a game for the Playstation. Yeah the game might be on multiple disks but who cares? A lot of the towns carry the same theme but each town has a diverse look. It’s a breath of fresh air when developers don’t overuse the same textures. I can’t go too far into the story but for the most part it’s about the main guy, Cloud, joins a group of people who are out to stop the corporation known as Shinra. Avalanches, the group of rebels, want to stop this company because they are draining the life out of the planet to use as an energy source. Cloud does their first mission but when they get to the Shinra Corporation Headquarters everything changes. We are introduced to one of the greatest and most evil villains in any game, Sephiroth. I want to go on but it would ruin this entire game and Final Fantasy 7 has one of the greatest stories ever told. The thing I really enjoyed about this game is it really made you have a connection with the characters of the game. You get the real feeling of evilness when you see Sephiroth and that isn’t common in a lot of games. Although you hear no audio of any character talking, the dialogue boxes do a good job of setting the tone. The soundtrack for this game is really in sync with the game. Sad moments get slow music, action packed get upbeat music and the whole game is like that and for one of the few times I really enjoye the soundtrack.
Final Fantasy 7 is a game for true RPG enthusiasts. One of Square’s greatest games of all time and will go down in history as one of the greatest games of all time. Judge for yourself by watching the video below.
