Competition is great, I can't say that enough. I enjoyed so many MLB games back in the early part of last decade, because you had 3-4 games continually pushing each other. Great strides were made each year, until The Show came out on top. It got to the point where 2K gave up, and the Show, until now (fingers crossed) has improved in some areas but falling well short of online play. EA's NHL has coasted every few years since 2K left the NHL realm. NBA2K has had some issues with online, but that's the only sport where there is competition now, and Live is still in it's infancy.
A new football franchise is much needed, and it can't be a one-off game. There needs to be a plan put in place for at least two games to be released, so they can take community feedback and mold them together for a second shot, especially if the first one doesn't pan out. Like TH said, a game with customization, especially rosters, makes things so much better for the hardcore players who are in it for the entire year (or more) of the game.
Forget a console game at this point, I'm still not sure this even comes to fruition to be honest. It's a whole lot of work to get a game franchise off the ground, much less one about football, and with the lack of details at this point, I'm not sold it's where they are claiming it is (or at least Montana claiming it is.)
I'm still very confused about any potential 2K involvement. The head honchos over there (OS) have continually shot down any possibility of that by pointing out that the old 2K football team has moved on and are doing different things. I don't have a hard time believing that, it's been almost 10 years. It still confuses me greatly though because of Grow saying any involvement with 2K was "Certainly uncertain" (That's the type of stuff making people rage), and Montana re-tweeting the picture of 2K and his likeness in the game. If Montana is the head guy as far as information being released, why isn't that photo being taken more seriously? Why would he re-tweet that?
The latest theory I've read is that maybe they are using 2K purely as inspiration material, as evidenced by Grow tweeting the photo of 2K5 on the office television with a caption that read "The Daily Devotional". I guess given what little information we have that probably holds the most water right now. I just still find it curious that Montana would re-tweet that photo, given that 2K is what it is.Comment

This is how I seen those tweets. They want to dive into the old 2K football fan base, create anticipation and buzz around the fact that they are gearing towards a football game more aligned with 2K's views than EA's.Comment

Damon Grow (JM16 developer) can't wait for Sunday.
Damon Grow @DamonGrow @simulationfl omg so ready for Sunday can't wait!
He is referring to the broadcast of the SFL's playoff games. It is obvious the JM16 development team is enamored with APF2K8. Damon spends hours every Sunday watching it and commenting on the tackles, the throws, the plays, etc. etc.

He will be there again on Sunday @ 4 PM eastern commenting on APF2K8 and JM16 on occasion.

Looks like those rumors of an Xbox exclusive just got even more weight.
Montana tweeted that he is visiting Microsoft's campus in Seattle earlier today.Comment

I'm wondering if this is going to be Backbreaker with a new name? Not that that is a bad thing, it just wouldn't be a sim style football game to compete with Madden...which is what what most of the community wants to see in the future.Comment
-
Backbreaker for all intents and purposes really just seemed to be a demo to show what the euphoria engine could do (imo it proved, as well as Madden recently, that a physics based football game just doesn't work given the tech available at the moment). The developers for this game haven't mentioned Backbreaker in the slightest and have consistently pointed at 2K5 and 2K8 as inspiration for what they are trying to accomplish here.
Now I understand the argument that this is simply a marketing ploy to take advantage of the former 2K crowd and the "sim" demographic, because that makes sense from multiple angles. The idea that this is another version of backbreaker though really isn't rooted in anything. The only similarity, given the little information we have, would be that it appears both titles would be generic games. But 2K8 was a generic game as well, So was Blitz the league. So Backbreaker isn't the sole example of that ever being done.
Given that all anyone can really do is speculate because of the lack of information, It's understandable to get different POV's. But I've heard the backbreaker one before, and maybe it is another backbreaker; I don't know. but there is nothing from the developers or Montana himself to indicate that is the path they are trying to follow.Comment

I think people are drawing conclusions based on what we see being communicated. While Damon Grow has been doing a solid job getting the word out on the game, if he were associated with any work being done by 2K or on behalf of 2K, a developer would not be the one giving you news on the title. It would be coming from 2K's PR departmen.
Secondly, the tweets from the man who's name is on the game. He's visiting MS' campus, which leads to speculation that they are developing the game. Considering the close relationship between Natural Motion Studios and MS, it makes sense that they partner together and develop a game using the updated Euphoria engine (first seen in Backbreaker and most recently in GTA V).
It's all speculation but that scenario can't be dismissed based on what we do know.
