One Goal
#22 TCU Horned Frogs (9-1) at Syracuse Orange (5-5)
"One win," I stated, standing in the middle of the huddle. "One win separates us from our goal. Bowl eligibility. A post-season. A stepping stone for next year. Do you want this? Do you want to be part of the re-birth of Syracuse football!? It's time, boys. I don't want to walk out of here with our heads hung low - fuck that. And the thought of 'oh we have Louisville next week to get our sixth win' better not cross your fucking mind. We're getting this today, and we're going to show the nation that it's a new era. TCU ain't got shit on us. Now...Who we are!?"
"SU!"
"And what we do!?"
"Stomp on you!"
"I said, what we do!?"
"Stomp on you!"
"Break it down now! One, two, three..."
"SU! Will rock you!"
...
And the quest towards pulling off the biggest upset in the last five years was on. TCU came out angry - knowing that their BCS hopes died when they fell to Utah last week - and put an early touchdown up on the board. I was fearing the worst because when a team scored so quickly on us, we would just roll over and give up but that wasn't happening today.
That's because Ryan was firing on all cylinders. He single-handily kept us in the game with precision passes to all of our receivers; not targeting on just me. 300 yards and two touchdowns later, we were still down by one but had the ball with three and a half minutes left.
I was held to four catches before the final drive, but suddenly I was getting open against TCU's all-american corner Jason Teague. First it was a quick hitch for eight yards, then a 10 yard out while keeping both my feet in bounds and then another hitch for 12 yards which moved us to the 31 yard line of TCU's. The game was in our grasp and I was feeling really confident about pulling off the upset.
The play was called 15 Go, which had me on the right all by myself running a fade on the corner. If the safety shifted over, then Ryan would hit Lavar across the middle on a deep post and if he played the post, I would be getting the call.
The ball was snapped and I broke off into my route. Immediately I read the safety shading to the middle and I threw my arm up for the ball. Ryan chucked it and my feet got tangled up with Teague's a little, which caused an interception. After Teague was tackled, I walked off the field disappointed, but then out of the corner of my eye I saw an object that would reverse our fate.
"Pass interference," the referee shouted. "Number 27 defense."
"Listen," I said to Ryan to make sure he didn't lose focus. "You didn't fuck up there; I did. Look for me again, I'll make sure I don't screw up this time."
Ryan called the same formation in the huddle, but instead had Lavar run a slant underneath and had me run the post over the middle. The line held their blocks well and as soon as I saw the secondary go into a Cover Two look, I signaled for the ball and instantly had it come in my direction.
I caught the ball at the one with the safeties closing and thought about lying down to save some time. Instead, the greedy side of me took over and I stretched my arm cross the plane right before I took a shot. We were just one minute away from bowl eligibility.
TCU completed one deep pass but then failed on their next few chances, sealing the upset. The student section poured onto the field and some of the seniors had tears flowing from their eyes, knowing that next week wasn't their last game, but they had another one after Louisville.

Some cliffs for everyone, if you're lost; starting from the last set of cliff-notes:
- Ethan goes to South Carolina with Melyssa and visits South Carolina with the intentions to transfer. However, running into Rebecca down there makes Ethan reconsider his decision.
- Rodney appears at an Everett High School basketball game where Ethan is supposed to be getting his jersey retired. Ethan's little brother decides to watch the ceremony, but with a gun hidden, Rodney starts firing shots in order to fulfill CP's job. The shots miss Ethan, but hit other spectators and Evan.
- Evan is only survivor and Rodney goes to jail, which ends Rodney's role in the story.
- Ethan starts off the basketball season coming off the bench, but earns the starting job after two straight losses. He becomes the second leading scorer on the team and posts his best games against hated rival Georgetown.
- Melyssa goes into labor during the Seton Hall game and after fouling out, Ethan leaves the arena mid-game to accommodate her. His son, Sean Joseph, is born healthy.
- Britt writes a story on Ethan, which includes the revelation of his near-suicide during football season. The story gets to Coach Boeheim and after a meeting with Ethan, he suspends him for the rest of the season. Syracuse would go on to lose in the first round.
- Ethan breaks off all contact with Britt after the story and focuses on the football season ahead. The team gets off to a rocky start with a 10-48 blowout loss to Boston College, but turn around and take two straight wins.
- South Carolina comes and visits Syracuse on the fourth game of the season. With Ethan befriending starting quarterback Stephen Garcia during his visit down south, the two plan to meet up after the game. Garcia got the best of Ethan in the game and as he walked off to get ready for the night, a familiar woman in the stands gives him a bad feeling about the night.
- Turns out, Rebecca is Stephen's girlfriend and it makes for a very awkward night. In one of the most important moments in the story, Rebecca follows Melyssa into the bathroom and reveals the abortion years ago. Shocked by the news, Melyssa leaves the restaurant and puts her engagement ring on the table; a sign that they were done. Ethan is devastated whenever he comes back after paying the bill and makes it a mission to get her back.
- After a loss to Pittsburgh, Ethan receives a text from a friend and decides to go to the party he's hosting. There he runs into Britt and after explaining the break-up story to her, the two hook up which turns around Ethan's life.
Mel right now is living with her brother Troy and their (Ethan and Melyssa's) son Sean Joseph. The two haven't spoken since dinner after the South Carolina game and it seems that Britt has filled Mel's void in Ethan's life.
There you go.
