Brown, Davis, Little, McNabb...Woy?
"..I'm a king - bank rolls in the pockets of my jeans, I'm a king - you pussy ni**az couldn't see me in your dreams, I'm a king - top topic of all of your magazine, I'm a king - head of the body, leader of the team, I'm a king..."
It was a beautiful mid-summer day at Syracuse University. I had the top down on the new ride, blasting T.I.'s "Tha King" as other students walking around outside were staring at the new freshman.
"Is that our top football recruit?"
"Yeah I believe so. He's pretty cute though."
"I saw him first! Dibs."
"Haha, whatever."
As I pulled into the parking lot of the athletic offices, a guy in a flat-bill Yankees hat approached me.
"You that new recruit we signed? Woy, right? Sick whip."
"Thanks and yeah, I'm that recruit. And you are?"
"Mike Williams, senior receiver."
Mike was the team's leading receiver during his freshman and sophomore seasons. After academic issues halted his junior season, he looked eager to get back on that field for a final year. I reached my hand out to shake his.
"Ethan Woy, freshman receiver."
"Nice to meet you man. What brought you to SU?"
"I came up here on a weekend visit and instantly loved the campus. Plus they told me that I would be able to play basketball here as well."
"Damn, quite the athlete huh?"
"Haha, yeah I guess so. You got your academic shit straightened out?"
"Oh yeah, definitely. I'm ready to play again this year."
"Yeah I bet. We're going be a sick pair of receivers."
"You know it. Well Coach Marrone probably wants you in there, he's got to talk to you about doing some sort of local commerical shit. Haha, but anyways, I'll be seeing you around."
"Aight, later."
I received some more stares once I walked into the building, like there was a target on my back already. Eventually I made it a few floors up, right into Coach Marrone's office.
*KNOCK KNOCK*
"Come in!"
"Hey Coach."
"Ethan! Nice to have you here early and safely. How was the drive?"
"Too damn long, haha. Six hours!"
"Geez. That your car out there? It's pretty nice."
"The convertible? Yeah, that's mine. Got it about a week or so ago."
"I like how you got it in school colors as well."
"Gotta rep Syracuse Coach."
"How'd you get the money to pay for that thing? Rich Rod send you money?"
Even though I wanted to gulp because I figured he heard about the situation, I tried my hardest to keep a straight face. Then, to my relief, Coach started to laugh.
"Haha, just messing with you kid."
"Heh, I figured so."
"I forgot to ask you when I called the other day...could you be able to do a commerical hyping up this season for our fan base? You wouldn't be the only player in it though."
"Of course. Who's going to do it with me?"
"It'll be you, senior receiver Mike Williams and senior tailback Delone Carter. They kind of want to make it like 'the present and the future' type thing."
"Sounds good, I'm down."
We continued our small-talk and eventually got to talking about expectations for myself and the team.
"So what's your expectations Ethan?"
"Well Coach, for myself...I'd like to make All-Big East and the Freshman All-American team. I believe I can accomplish those."
"We've got some good receivers in the Big East, but I know you have the talent to make that happen. How about team wise?"
"Team? Honestly, I know we're not the most talented bunch, but with hard work and determination, I believe we can make a bowl game. Eventually I want to get to a BCS bowl."
"Believe me kid, so do I. We have the same team expectations, but I'd like to share my expectations for you."
I was intrigued to see what he expected of me. Double-digit touchdowns? Over 1000 yards receiving?
"Shoot."
"You recognize the names Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little and Donovan McNabb?"
Jim Brown played at Syracuse from 1954-56. He was one of the most feared players to face back in the day and set all sorts of records. He was an All-American in both basketball and lacrosse, and was a double digit scorer on the basketball team. He later was drafted by the Cleveland Browns where he enjoyed one of the most successful NFL careers in history, retiring with the most rushing yards in league history.
Ernie Davis played from 1959-61. He won a national championship as a sophomore in '59, the Heisman Trophy in 1961, and was a two time All-American. He was drafted by the Washington Redskins and was traded to the Cleveland Browns to play along Syracuse alumni Jim Brown. Unfortunately, he developed acute monocytic leukemia, never played a down in the NFL, and eventually died on May 18, 1963 at the age of 23.
Floyd Little continued the great runningback tradition at Syracuse, wearing the famed number 44 jersey from 1964-66. He was a three time All-American, eclipsed the century mark in rushing yards in 1965, and finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting in his last two seasons. He was drafted by the AFL's Denver Broncos in 1967, where he became a two time AFL All-Star, and a three time Pro Bowler once the leagues merged.
Donovan McNabb played from 1994-98. After red-shirting his first year, he started every game under center in his career. He was first team All-Big East all four years and was Big East Offensive Player of the Year three of those years. Just like Brown, he found success in other sports, as he was a key reserve on the Syracuse basketball team. In 1999, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles and has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL since then.
"Of course Coach...some of the greatest ever to put on a Syracuse uniform."
"Right. And I want to see Ethan Woy mentioned in the same breath as them when you graduate."
Chills ran through my spine when he said that. My name mentioned with some of the all-time greats of college football? I couldn't believe it.
"Wow Coach, that would be an honor if I had half the career they did."
"I believe you will. I see that kind of potential in you. Your confidence on the field is unparallel to anyone else's. My coaching staff agrees with me when they say that you have the best pair of hands they've ever seen. Everything about you has 'all-time great' written all over it. You just need to prove it."
Coach really knew how to give me goosebumps. I cleared my throat and said with confidence...
"I will prove it."Last edited by Woy; 08-05-2009, 10:17 PM.
