The game started off very slow for both teams. Matt Grothe drove his team down the field but threw an interception. However, just like the season's gone so far, Greg Paulus gave the ball back with his own pick. Grothe then drove down the field in the second quarter, hitting all his receivers, before punching in himself to give South Florida a 7-0 lead.

"Grothe's in the gun, two receivers split out on both sides. Here's the snap, Grothe drops...and it's a draw play! He's to 10, touchdown Bulls! The redshirt senior gives the number 25 team in the land an early lead!"

We started driving, riding Delone before our drive stalled and Paulus's hail mary attempt was picked off to end the half. However, we got the ball to start the third quarter and we finally captialized on a long drive.

...

"Paulus gets the snap, hands off to Carter...actually it's play action, freezes the defense...sees Woy! He fires, and it's caught! 20, 10, touchdown Syracuse! An extra point will tie this game!"

That's right, an extra point would tie the game. Well...

...

"Here's the snap, the kick...it's wide right! So instead of a tie game, South Florida still leads 7-6!"

Our defense lost some confidence it seemed after that botched extra point. Grothe tore up our defense again, driving the whole field before throwing a score. It was 14-6 after the end of the third and the score would continue to stay that way it looked like, until the last two minutes of the game.

...

"Paulus hits Woy for 12 yards and a first down!"

"Carter runs for 11 yards and another first down!"

"Mike Williams breaks a tackle and gets a first down!"

...

That's how the drive went. With 30 seconds left, we were at the nine yard line when suddenly we stalled. An incomplete pass by Greg, a lack of run blocking causing Delone to lose 3 and another incomplete pass left us on the 12 yard line with one last chance to score.

"Here's the snap..."

...

"DOWN, SET, HUT!"

"...Paulus looks right..."

...

"Greg, look my fucking way! I'm wide open!"

"...Woy is open on a slant route..."

...

"Fuck Greg!"

"...and he throws behind Williams and into a defensive back's hands. Game over. South Florida makes their way out of Syracuse with a close win."

AI is really frustrating in this game. Sometimes they'll throw it to you when you're open, sometimes they'll throw it to you when you're in double coverage, etc.

Raising the Bar

"Damn, you weren't kidding Rodney. The boy is good."

Rodney and his friend Tyrone each had a beer in their hands, as they were watching Rodney's client in action. It was 7-0 South Florida at the end of the half, as they were showing the half time statistics.

"What'd I tell ya? Eight touchdowns the last two games. And he's already at five catches in this one. If Paulus could get his head out of his ass, he'd probably be in the endzone at least once so far today."

Tyrone nodded his head, signaling that he agreed. Rodney picked up his can and took another sip of his beer.

"I should start raising the bar on this kid though. He's got West Virginia, Akron and Cincinnati coming up, two decent secondaries and a weak one. If I put on the table double-digit catches and a touchdown, could you imagine the money I'd bring in?"

"Man, we'd be rolling in green."

"Damn right we would be. I'm tempted to pull the trigger on it."

As they continued to talk about raising the standard on Rodney's client's play, a commerical came across the screen.

"...future. With new coach Doug Marrone in, spirits are high. We signed a top 25 recruiting class and the hype behind the future of this program has student season ticket sales going through the roof. First the Big East, then the NCAA. We're back Syracuse, you better believe it."

As the commerical faded out, Tyrone began to speak up.

"Woy's right in that commerical - the future is bright for this program."

"As long as he completes my goals, he'll be a big part of that future."

Some small talk ensued after that, and then South Florida kicked off to start the second half.

"Damn, Paulus is actually looking decent this drive."

"Yeah for once. Let's see if he continues his success."

...

The game continued to go on, as South Florida put up another touchdown to make it 14-6. With the game hanging in the balance, Rodney and Tyrone started to move their chairs closer to the TV as Paulus started to drive the Orange down the field.

"Shit, Paulus is gonna bring them back!"

"I don't have enough faith in the guy. He's going to blow it."

...

"Paulus hits Woy for 12 yards and a first down!"

...

"More money for yours truly."

"And another first down for the team."

...

"And the pass is incomplete. It'll be fourth and 12 with 14 seconds left."

"Here's the ball game Rodney."

"Let's go Woy, clutch play here."

...

"Here's the snap, Paulus looks right, Woy is open on a slant route..."

"Throw it to him Paulus!"

And with that, Rodney lit up a cigarette and turned off the television...and also turned up the standards for the freshman phenom.
