Welcome Back
Monday was a rude awakening of sorts. I had to go tutor Britt early in the morning, and we didn't talk about calculus at all.
"So are you excited to get back on the football field, superstar?"
"Please don't call me that."
"I can call you whatever I want, stud. I saved your life, remember?"
She had a point.
"Yeah and I thank you every day for that. Anyways, yeah I'm ready to get back on the field. I gotta learn not to take losing so seriously."
"You're at Syracuse, what do you expect? This team hasn't had a winning season since 2001. You'll have to accept losses for now while Marrone gets this ship turned around."
Damn, Britt knows her sports. Always wanted that in a woman.
After a little small talk, I left Britt's dorm and made my way back to Troy's apartment, where I had a surprise waiting for me.
"Ethan!"
A sense of relief went through my head. I probably had the biggest smile on my face since I arrived at Syracuse when I walked through that door.
"Man, did I miss you babe. How's your uncle doing?"
"He's doing a lot better. How have you been?"
"I've been missing you every second of every day."
"You're too cute. How was the game Saturday?"
Shit. Do I tell her about all that happened?
"Umm...we beat Akron, 20-7."
Nah, it's going to be my secret.
"Did I buy a shit load of alcohol before I left? I don't remember."
I could hear Troy over by the fridge, looking through the Captain Morgan, Bacardi and Jack Daniels.
"Troy, since you let me use your apartment, I decided to buy you some gifts."
"Thanks man, appreciate them. Wait...how'd you buy them? You're not 21."
"I got a fake. According to it, my name's Chad Murray."
"You do kind of look like Chad Michael Murray, hun. One of the reasons why I fell for you."
"That, and my charm, right?"
"Hey! If you two want to sweet talk with each other, go to your own dorm, haha."
Troy continued looking through the fridge, looking for more surprises.
"Did you decide to drink some of the Jack while I was gone, Ethan?"
"Hey I bought it, didn't I?"
"True, true."
We talked for a little while then Melyssa and I headed out to her dorm.
"Did anything go wrong while I was gone?"
I was surprised, and hoping she didn't know of the whole near-death episode.
"Nothing at all hun. Why would you think that?"
"For some reason during the flight, I felt something happened. That's all."
"Sure it wasn't the baby kicking?"
"Positive. Speaking of which..."
Now what's she going to bring up?
"...where do we stand, future-wise?"
Damn, there's something I haven't put much thought into.
"Well...you know I love you, right?"
"Yes, and I love you too."
"Now do you mean by future-wise, marriage?"
"Yeah kinda. Since we are starting a family and all..."
"Honestly, I haven't thought much of it - the marriage ordeal."
"Oh."
I could tell that she didn't like that answer, as her smile turned upside down.
"But the more I think about us in general, there's no doubt in my mind I could see us getting married sometime in the future."
And that frown perked back up to a smile, nice save Ethan.
I have so many things running through my mind right now, from where I stand with Britt, to this whole "marriage" conversation with Melyssa. Add football on top of that, and now you have one hectic life - especially with Rodney breathing down my neck if I have one more bad game.
