I decided to help everyone out with an in-depth overview of what has gone on so far in the story. Maybe you remember everything from the story, maybe not. Hopefully this will help someone out or bring a new follower into the mix.
Ethan starts the story as a sophomore who is put in during a crucial situation during a rivalry game in the 2006-07 basketball season. With seconds left in the game, the ball and the game lies in his hands. He goes up for a lay-up, and on the way up, his shoulder is grabbed by the opposing player. This sends him on a flashback where he broke his collarbone earlier that year, during the first game of the football season. When he makes the lay-up to win the game, he expects pain from the earlier injury...but that is not the case. This is the beginning of his clutch reputation, because there are many more game-winning plays he makes in his career.
From there the story shifts back a few years, where Ethan got his start in football. It wasn't by choice, however, but rather because his friend tricking him into going. Scared of being hit, he was matched up against one of the biggest kids on the junior high team in an Oklahoma drill. After being drilled the first play, Ethan finally realizes that being tackled doesn't hurt as bad as he thought and he asks the coach to go again. The older freshman tries to tackle him, but Ethan jukes past and makes an impression on the coaches.
Then the story goes back to the present, where we have Ethan and his family on their way to Hilton Head for vacation. He just got his license, so his dad arranged a way that he would have a car out there. The first night in the south, he takes the car and drives to the beach where he meets a girl named Rebecca at a party. The two decide that the party is lame and they make their way to Rebecca's house, where the couple eventually have sex - despite not having a condom.
The next day he takes Rebecca out to dinner. After some small talk, his phone rings. The scene shifts to some coaches at Everett having a meeting about the depth chart for next season. Despite not playing after the first game, the coaches decide that Ethan will be their number one receiver on the depth chart. Back to the dinner scene, Ethan answers his phone, which was a call from the head coach, Coach Waltman. He tells him about their decision, which excites him about the upcoming season.
After making a great impression in the first game, the main character's story takes a u-turn. Everett goes on to go 2-8 on the season, and after losing the next to final game, some of the seniors start badmouthing Ethan. He overhears their conversation and gets into it with the starting left tackle. Ethan gets the best of him, but when he gets up Coach yells at him to get in his office. Once in the office, Coach slams the door and starts yelling about his actions. Coach suspends Woy, which give him a bad reputation with the community.
After junior year ends, Ethan and his friends go to Penn State's senior camp where he makes a big impression on the scouts. The scene then shifts to a local restaurant where he works. As he's ready to take a man's order, he's very surprised to find out who the man is - Rich Rodriguez. Rich talks about his performance at the Penn State camp and offers him a scholarship...with incentives. Despite not ordering anything, Rich gives Ethan a tip of 500 dollars.
The story goes back to Hilton Head, where Ethan is looking forward to meet up with Rebecca again. However, after calling the blonde beauty, she expresses feelings of anger and disbelief. They meet up at her house where she's home alone and drunk. After talking, Ethan discovers that she was pregnant with his child, but she got an abortion. This would explain her disgust with our main character, and after explaining how she hasn't paid off it yet, Ethan goes back into his car to grab an enevelope full of money - the same money that Rich Rod has been consistently giving him.
Getting Rebecca's outburst off his mind, he decides to relax on the beach the next day. As he falls asleep, he starts dreaming - the first of the many visions Ethan has. However, he was interrupted by a frisbee that hit him. Waking up with a hint of anger in his voice, the displeasure quickly subsided when he saw the beauty standing in front of him. They greet themselves and after some small talk, she invites him to watch a fireworks display the next day.
Melyssa and Ethan meet at Shelter Cove, where the fireworks display is being held. As the two get to know each other, Rebecca starts to interrupt with text messages about the money he gave her. After watching the display on her grandparents' yacht, the two start to flirt and eventually have sex.
Now we are back in Everett, where football camp has just started. Coach starts naming his captains for the 2008 season and Ethan is surprised that he was named one at the end. After a few days of practice, it's Friday where it's the easiest practice of the week. After the morning session of camp, Coach and Ethan talk about media day coming up and then he goes to grab his lunch. Continuing a tradition, the seniors eat their lunch in the hallway while watching volleyball camp. The guys are highly intrigued about a very unfamiliar looking brunette, who was showing all the other girls up.
Media day is where the next scene takes place, as the seniors get questions asked to them about the upcoming season. Ethan gets the most questions asked to him where he discusses schools that he might play for and expectations for the season. A reporter at the end asks him about the incident that got him suspended last year, where he keeps his cool and doesn't answer him. The reporter gets to take his picture for the paper and continues to piss Ethan off. He finds out that he's a graduate of Tussey Mountain - Everett's biggest rival.
The first day of school brings a huge surprise into Ethan's life - the return of Melyssa. Surprised to see her, they talk mostly all class and decide to meet up at her house to catch up on life. That same day, Ethan and one of his best friends, Kevin, go to Burger King for lunch. They talk about the new girl, who Ethan reveals that he knows. After practice, he goes to her house and is surprised at who opens the door. Thinking it's another boyfriend, he's shocked to find out that the guy is her brother. As they discuss the past, she reveals that Rebecca vandalized her house as soon as she moved.
After blowing out Glendale in the opener, Ethan meets a mysterious man as he is walking out of the locker room. The man, CP, is a booster for the Michigan program. He adds to Woy's pay and wants a guarantee that Ethan will commit to Michigan. Ethan says that he might get a better offer but they are still the leaders, which makes CP mad. CP threatens him if he decides to not go to Ann Arbor, which confuses Ethan.
The next game was much closer, as Ethan caught a touchdown pass with 1:45 left to win the game. He gets scholarship offers from Penn State, West Virginia, and Syracuse after the game - which pisses off CP.
After ESPNU does a feature on the superstar, rival Tussey Mountain decides to make some headlines of their own. They call out the team and Woy on the official District sports website and then Cody Swope, an opposing cornerback, vandalizes Ethan's truck. Obviously pissed off, he leaves school and washes off the paint. Then he hatches a great idea, in which he would act as the Tussey AD. He called the Tussey offices and made an annoucement over the loudspeaker, calling out the entire team. This shocked the Tussey players and only added fuel to the fire.
After getting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty during the coin toss, the game started off with a bang. Ethan caught the first pass, then scored on a long touchdown which he earned another unsportsmanlike conduct for highstepping. The extra point was missed which came back to bite Everett in the ass. Down 31-28 with seconds left, Brad Swindell threw the ball deep to Ethan where he caught it near the goal line. Stretching his arm out, the referee signaled touchdown which added more to the legend.
Three more games past and then it was Homecoming. Before the game, Ethan was announced as the king which his teammates gave him some hell for - all in good fun, however. Another blow out win was followed by the dance later that night. One of Ethan's best friends, Breann, was named the queen at the dance. Then at Bill's party, a kid that Ethan doesn't like, Dan, starts to hit on Melyssa while drunk. Ethan knocked him out with one punch but then was startled to hear police sirens. Him and Melyssa made it to her house, but then the cops showed up there. However, they knew who Ethan was and let them off the hook.
After throwing the game-winning touchdown in the District 5 championship, Ethan guaranteed a State championship at the pep rally later that week. The first three games were a breeze, winning each by double digits. However, in the title game they would face #1 seed Steelton-Highspire.
Jeremiah Young, Steel High's star runningback, called out the team in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Ethan did an unlikely thing - he didn't fire back. Afterwards, he discussed expectations with Melyssa and how the world left like it was on his shoulders. After an emotional pre-game speech, the team got fired up and was ready to play the game of their lives. However, for the first half, the team struggled. Brad threw four picks and at halftime Everett was down, 21-7. Then things turned around as the offense got going in the second half. With 22 seconds to go, Brad threw a bomb to Ethan and he brought it in - sealing a State title.
After a fun time in San Antonio, Ethan took the field in the U.S. Army All-American Game. Kevin Newsome, Penn State commit, threw a touchdown to him and they both broke out and did the "Thriller." Then after the game, he would announce his committment to a school. After calling some of the closest people in his life, and getting a call from someone unexpected, Ethan decided to commit to Syracuse - shocking everyone. CP decided to plan revenge once he heard the news.
Then after winning the Gatorade Player of the Year award in PA, Ethan and his friends decide to take a day to go to Hooters. While there, news breaks that Greg Paulus, former Duke point guard, will transfer to Syracuse in hopes of starting at quarterback with the team. This frustrates Ethan but his mind quickly gets off of that when he meets the waitress, Britt. Britt is a fan of the Syracuse athletic program and asks Woy for an autograph. However, when she gives him the piece of paper, he notices a number on there.
Graduation quickly approaches and suddenly Ethan is there receiving his diploma. Once booed constantly, the crowd stands up and gives him a standing ovation. After the ceremony, Melyssa finds him and startles him with some news - she's pregnant. After a flashback to the time where Rebecca revealed she was pregnant, Ethan made it clear that he wanted to keep the baby.
Troy was madder than hell when he found out about his sister's pregnancy. One day when Ethan came over, Troy started to beat him up. Melyssa eventually started it and revealed something from Troy's past that completely turned his tide of thinking. His ex-fiance cheated on him a week before their wedding a year ago, which put a sour taste in Troy's mouth. After apologizing to Ethan, he decided to give his help whenever needed - including moving to Syracuse with Ethan and Melyssa.
After getting a new car and saying goodbye to one of his best friends, Breann, Ethan makes the six hour drive to his home for at least the next three years - Syracuse University. Coach Marrone talks to him about expectations and how he has the potential to be listed with Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, and Donovan McNabb as one of the top players in Syracuse history.
He meets his roommate, senior tailback Delone Carter. After filming a commerical with him and fellow senior Mike Williams, he is pressured into asking a good-looking blonde behind the camera to a party. Surprised to find out, the girl is Britt - the waitress from Hooters. At the party he finds himself alone with Britt, and right before he cheats, Melyssa texts him. He realizes what he is doing and gets out of there, where he is pulled into the basement by a mysterious man, Rodney. He runs the biggest sports gambling operation in central New York. After hearing about the business, he finds out that he is Rodney's "client" or the guy that he bets on to perform well.
Despite getting into it with Greg before practice, Ethan is impressed after catching some passes from him during a drill. This led into some good chemistry as Syracuse won their opening game over Minnesota, 23-17. Lee predicts a Syracuse upset over Penn State the following game, but it was not meant to be as the Orange fell, 7-35.
Then Ethan put himself on the map against Northwestern. Despite a 28-38 loss, the freshman caught 10 passes for over 200 yards and four touchdowns. These stats won him Big East Player of the Week, which had the university schedule a press conference for Ethan to accept the award. After speaking to the Big East commissioner, he answered questions and noticed that Rodney was in the crowd. Once the conference was over, Ethan met up with him where he brought the "three strike" rule to his attention.
Another four touchdown game against Maine helped raise Ethan's stats, but then things took a turn for the worse during the South Florida game. Despite catching nine balls and a touchdown, Greg screwed up in the clutch and cost the Orange the game. Rodney was still impressed with Ethan's performance and decided to raise the bar on his standards, which turned out to be the start of a huge downfall.
Preparing for their big rivalry game against West Virginia, Greg and Ethan were not on the same page on any of their passes. This really got under Ethan's skin and after a few verbal jabs, he knocked down Greg with a good punch. After running suicides for what he did, Coach and Ethan sat down and talked about the quarterback situation.
The Battle for the Schwartzwalder Trophy had Ethan's life spiraling further down. With seconds left and the game hanging in the balance, Greg threw the ball to Ethan. However, Ethan did a very uncharacteristic thing and dropped the game-winning touchdown.
This put Ethan in a major state of depression. He went to Melyssa's after the game and she revealed that she was leaving for two weeks to visit her sick uncle. He then made his way to Troy's apartment, and asked him if he could stay there for a while. He agreed to it and once he left, Ethan made drove over to the local alcohol distributor where he would buy some liquor and rum. As he was watching the highlights from the day in college football, he started to take some shots - hoping that the alcohol would erase the depressed state he was in. Completely delusional, Ethan starts shouting at himself in the mirror before seeing visions of the future. Melyssa texted him and as he was texting her back, he passed out.
Nearing death, the medics save his life and the next scene starts with Britt standing in front of him. She explains how she followed him after the game to all the different places, because she knew he was battling depression. Britt is the reason why Ethan is still alive at this point. Ethan feels like Britt should be in his life and might be his guardian angel.
Coach visits Ethan in the hospital and proceeds to chew him out. He reveals that he has been suspended for the Akron game, which is basically strike two in Rodney's eyes. Once released from the hospital, Ethan has to face Rodney, so after seeing some more visions, he woke up to a voicemail from him. After having his life threatened by Rodney, he walks out knowing his goals and realizes he has to meet them, no matter what.
Barely making the grade in a blowout loss against Cincinnati, expectations were raised again in the showdown at Pitt. However, a blast from the past throws Ethan's life even more into a spin. Breann calls Ethan asking him how he's been and asks for tickets for the game. He agrees and then falls asleep to a flashback of him and Breann together.
However, bringing Breann to the game is the wrong decision cause when Ethan looks for her in the stands, he finds Dan with her. This distracts him and he drops multiple passes, leading to strike three. Then the story goes to a scene where Rodney is watching the game and after seeing the results, he calls up the boss of this hit - CP. They decide to wait till after football's over to take Ethan out.
After the game, the team goes back to the hotel where Ethan falls asleep. He wakes up at 1:30 because of Delone's concern. They get to talking where Ethan eventually finds out that Delone was a client of Rodney's. This brings emotional stress from the senior runningback, as he told the story about what happened when he got three strikes. Ethan made the decision then and there that he was getting out of Syracuse during Christmas break, whether it would be for just then or for good.
Without worrying about Rodney's goals, Ethan could relax and just play his game. He caught a touchdown, but Louisville scored a touchdown with nine seconds left to win the game. Another loss, this one in the blowout fashion to Rutgers left the Orange with one game left in their season.
However, the tides turned in the finale. After discussing next year with Coach, the team took the field against rival Connecticut. It was close the entire game, but near the end the game was hanging in Woy's balance. As the ball was thrown to him, a flashback from the West Virginia game went through his mind. Unlike then, he caught the ball and ran it in for the game-winning score.
So now we're at the end of the first season in football. Ethan and Melyssa are going back down to South Carolina during part of Christmas break because of her sick uncle, so you know something will go down then...Last edited by Woy; 09-15-2009, 09:24 PM.
