Legacy
"There he is."
"What's up Coach?"
"You guys need the motivation, and who better to bring it than last year's all-state selection? Ethan, you got it from here."
"Thanks Coach. Damn...I loved games like this. I loved playing teams that hated your guts, cause whenever you beat them, it made it sooooo much sweeter. First of all, it's a rivalry game. The records are thrown out the window every time we play Tussey. Play hard-nosed D from the tip and never let your guard down. If one of them are going to have an open lane to the basket, close that shit. No easy baskets. Make them earn that shit from the line. Sorry for the cussing by the way Coach, Tussey always gets me heated, haha."
"It's fine, continue."
"Execute your offense. Don't settle for the bad shot and don't try to be the hero. If you have a contested shot but have your teammate open, get the ball to him right away. Not one individual here is going to carry this team. You all need to come as one to beat these guys. They are really good; I know this. No team is unbeatable though, not even our football team last year. Come together as one, feed off this crowd's energy, don't take any of their shit, and win this damn ball game!"
"Yeah, let's get this!"
I walked up smiling, knowing I lit a fire under their ass. They really made me look good, jumping out to a 12-0 lead to start the game. However, the strength of Tussey's squad brought them back to tie it and at halftime they were up by three. Koontzy added twenty minutes to the intermission, that way it would give me enough time to make my speech.
...
"Coach, is it alright if I go watch my brother?"
"Yeah, go right for it Evan. Not every day you get to see a family member have their jersey retired."
...
"And tonight we are honoring one of Everett's legends. He led our school to a state title in football and an elite eight appearance in basketball. At Syracuse, he dominated opposing cornerbacks and was named All-Big East and Freshman All-American. Fans remember fondly this young man's first basketball game, where he came off the bench and hit a game-winning layup against rival Bedford. For the last two years, the number 15 jersey has been worn by possibly the greatest athlete in this school's history; and now it will never be worn again. Please give a warm welcome to the podium, class of 2009 graduate...Ethan Woy!"
...
"This is great. I enjoyed watching Ethan last year. What about you?"
Rodney was momentarily confused as of who the man beside him was speaking to. After a few seconds, he finally realized that the guy was speaking to him.
"Oh...yeah. He really was amazing last year."
Those words were tough to say, but he was just trying to fit in.
...
"Thank you, thank you. First of all...wow. I'm extremely honored to be recognized like this by my former school. It's crazy how I fell from the bottom with the whole suspension my junior year, to rise back to the top with the incredible senior year my teammates and I had. I couldn't have been able to do this without you guys. In fact, they should also be having their numbers retired...not only me..."
...
"So are you a distant relative of his? I don't believe I've seen you at any games before."
This man really pissing Rodney off, trying to dig into his personal life with more questions. He reached for the weapon in his pocket, but decided against it.
"Nah, I'm just a fan."
...
"...I'd like to thank a lot of people for being where I'm at today. First of all, I want to thank my family for believing in me and pushing me in all of my sports. I want to thank my coaches for believing in me and giving me the chance to perform. They really pushed me and made me better than I ever thought I would be. If it wasn't for them, I don't think I would be playing division one collegiate sports. And of course, I have to thank my teammates..."
...
"So, where are you from?"
By then, Rodney has lost it. He reveals the weapon and covers the man's mouth. The once joyful spectator has now turned to a prisoner in fear.
"Listen here. If you shut your mouth, I'll spare your life - okay?"
...
"...what can't I say about them? We didn't win all those games as individuals, but rather as a team. Playing with them was great, and I consider them part of my family actually. I know I'll have a special bond with each and every one of them. We've been through all the lows - like the 0-10 and 2-8 seasons in football, and the highs - the conference, district and state championships. I love knowing that when I come back for a reunion, the first thing my fellow classmates will mention is those titles and how incredible it felt to be at the top. Not me, but we left a legacy here that will be remembered for many years to come..."
...
"Yeah bitch, you're going to leave a legacy alright..."
As Rodney brought out his gun into the open, he showed a villain-like smirk. It was finally time. The struggling man finally pulled Rodney's hand off his mouth as he put his finger over the trigger and said to himself...
"Strike three bitch."
