Walking Out

"You almost done, hun?" Melyssa loudly asked from the other side of the bathroom wall. It was just about 7:45 and our company would be here in about a half an hour.

"Yeah just about," I replied from the other side. "Did you take Sean Joesph to Troy's?"

"Yeah, I just got back."

"Good," I muttered as I turned the water off. Steam filled the room as I wiped off the mirror and pondered about the night. Was that really Rebecca that I saw in Stephen's jersey? Or was I just seeing things?

I rubbed my eyes and looked at my reflection. Relax Ethan, nothing's going to go wrong tonight. You're just going out with your girl, your friend and his girl. I'm sure everything has blown over and there won't be any grudges held.

Flicking through the channels just to catch some highlights of our game, I heard a knock on the door and saw Stephen from outside the peephole. Breathing a sigh of relief after not seeing Rebecca beside him, I opened the door and greeted the South Carolina quarterback.

"Find the place alright?"

"Yeah," he replied. "Nice digs you got here." Then I turned my head and yelled to the other side of the room. "Hurry up Melyssa, company's here!"

I got a muffled response and assumed it was an "okay." "Women," I said to Stephen, shaking my head.

"Yeah," he chuckled. "I know what you mean."

"Speaking of them," I said. "Where's yours at? I thought she was coming with us tonight?"

"She'll be meeting us up there," he answered. "She insisted on it for some reason."

I took a deep gulp and looked to my right to see Melyssa in nothing but a towel.

"Oh sorry," she embarrassingly said. "I'll be ready in a few minutes."

"How good is this Dinosaur Barbque place?" Stephen asked as I was looking for a place to park.

"It's pretty good," I answered. "We've ate here once or twice. Oh here's a spot."

Just as I parked the car, Stephen waved at a mysterious figure in the shadows. Suddenly, she stepped into the light and confirmed my worst fears.

"Glad to see you found the place alright," Stephen said, giving her a hug. I slowly got out of the car and tried my best to avoid making eye contact, but she seemed more than happy to see me.

"Ethan, how have you been?"

I gave a fake smile back and replied. "Good. I'm upset about losing to your man's team today though."

"Well, you can't win them all," she said. Then her smile turned to a frown as I looked back to see Melyssa step out of the car. Once their eyes met, they both exchanged evil glares and there was an awkward silence before I broke it up.

"Let's get a table."

Dinner consisted of some small talk and uncomfortable looks. Stephen couldn't tell that Melyssa and Rebecca knew each other already and hated each other's guts, which brought me some relief. However, Melyssa excused herself to go to the bathroom and surprisingly Rebecca joined her.

"So how long have you known Rebecca?" I asked Stephen as I took a sip of my Mountain Dew.

"Met her at a party on campus," he replied. "We hit it off right away and before you knew it, she was in my bed the first night."

"Figures, that dirty little slut," I muttered under my breath. "You guys real serious like Mel and I, or is it still in the beginning stages?"

"Of all people Ethan could be with, you have to be it," Rebecca laughed as Melyssa was washing her hands.

"Shut it bitch," she angrily replied. "Are you really not over him? Sheesh, it's been fucking years since you've seen each other."

"Actually I ran into him when he was in South Carolina," she revealed, which the intentions of lying to piss her even further off. "Wait, he didn't tell you that? Yeah, he said something about getting back together with me if he did transfer to SC. Luckily for you, he's still here in shitty Syracuse."

"I don't believe a word you're saying," she shot back.

"Oh really now? I bet I'll get your attention when I reveal this..."

"I'm really starting to believe she's the one," Stephen said as he finished his meal.

"Sounds like you feel like I did when I was considering proposing. Thankfully, I'm positive I made the right move."

"Damn right you did, haha. No wonder why you didn't come down to SC."

"Well, she's part of the reason."

"What's that?" Melyssa nervously asked, biting her lip.

"Well you know that Ethan and I hooked up back in the day, right?"

"He told me that, I believe."

"Did he tell you what happened afterward?"

Melyssa gulped and shook her head no. One of the most mischievous smiles came across Rebecca's face as she revealed the painful truth that would cause an earthquake in one man's life.

"He got me pregnant and we aborted the baby."

"You sure you have to go?"

"Yeah man, I gotta get up early to leave for our flight back. Again, thanks for dinner."

"No problem, anytime. Good luck the rest of the season."

I walked over to the table and was about to leave a tip when I saw the one symbol of my love towards Melyssa laying there on the table. Stunned for a moment, I dropped to my knees as I finally realized what just happened.

Because of my past, the most important person in my life walked right out.
