2008/09 Raptors Season:
2008 was thought of as a year of great hope in Toronto. During the offseason, new General Manager Brian Colangelo traded the oft injured T.J. Ford, big man Rasho Nestrovic and first round draft pick Roy Hibbert to the Indiana Pacers for former All-Star Jermaine O'Neal who was expected to team with star Chris Bosh to form one of the leagues most lethal front courts. The Raptors would also add role players Roko Ukic, Will Soloman and Hassan Adams in the offseason while losing only Carlos Delfino to the Spanish League. The Raptors were considered one of the favorites in the Eastern Conference and Chris Bosh infamously pronounced his team equal to the World Champion Boston Celtics in the offseason.

What followed was one of the most un-Celtic like season's the Raptors could have hoped for.

Plagued by injuries to stars Bosh and Calderon all season coupled with the fact off season acquisition O'Neal played only 27 games in a Raptors uniform and the Dinos were almost immediately out of playoff contention and on most night's were forced to start a bench player thanks to an unfortunate injury. 17 games into the season and poised with an 8-9 record, Raptors management fired fan favorite and coach Sam Mitchell and promoted Canadian Jay Triano from his assistant coach position to file Mitchell's role. Triano would do no better and the Raptors would go into the All-Star break at 21-34 and out of playoff contention with several of the team's stars visibly unhappy.

On February 13, the Raptors would trade O'Neal and swingman Jamario Moon to the Miami Heat for former Phoenix Sun forward Shawn Marion and guard Marcus Banks. Marion would immediately clash with Triano and only two games into his tenure with the Raptors demanded a trade out of Toronto. However, after a solid final month of the season in which they went on a season high six game win streak and got several key contributions from rotation players such as Andrea Bargnani and Banks, the Raptors were poised to strike in 2009/10 and build on a 33-49 record that saw them finish fourth in the Eastern Conference's Atlantic Division.

2009 Offseason:
G.M. Colangelo promised a dramatically better Raptors squad from the 33-49 team that showed up in 2008/09 and began his shakeup of the roster June 9th when he traded three point specialist Jason Kapono to the division rival Philadelphia 76ers for big man Reggie Evans, who gives the Raptors toughness they soarly lacked down the stretch last season. Going into the offseason, the Raptors have two expiring contracts in Marion and guard Anthony Parker, who are both not expected to be retained by the July 1st deadline.

Raptors choose DeRozen at 9

Madison Square Garden- The Toronto Raptors ushered in a new era tonight at Madison Square Garden when they selected University of Southern California swingman Demar DeRozen with the 9th pick of the NBA Draft. DeRozen, who played only one season at USC, had averages of 13 points and 5 assists while playing as a two guard in Tim Floyd's offense. He hopes to capture the success of another one year Trojan, O.J. Mayo, in the NBA.

DeRozen will be holding a press conference with the media and asks that you get any questions in to T.Dot by Friday at 5:00 P.M.

Raps trade shooter Kapono to 6ers for Evans

TORONTO- Toronto Raptors General Manager Brian Colangelo promised retooling and Thursday he followed thru on that promise by sending three point specialist Jason Kapono to the division rival Philadelphia 76ers for power forward Reggie Evans.

"We will miss Jason for sure but we believe Reggie brings us some of the toughness we were lacking down the stretch last year and he can be a dependable minute muncher in our front court." Colangelo said at the introductory press conference.

Evans has established career averages of 4.3 points, 6.9 rebounds and 19.6 minutes per game and has grabbed 20+ rebounds three times in his five year career that has spanned Seattle, Denver and Philadelphia. He is expected to compete with Kris Humpheries for playing time off the bench.

Kapono had averages of 7.7 points and 1.2 rebounds in two sub-par seasons with the Raptors that including a three point championship at the 2007 All-Star Game.

"It's tough to leave friends here in Toronto but hopefully I can go to Philly and immediately make that team a contender." Kapono said via press release.
