Match Day #2
2 v. 4
Manuel Fernandes gets a hug
This game was anticipated as a battle between two Spanish league giants but turned into much more than that after an eventful first half.
Fernando Morientes would open the scoring eleven minutes in, redirecting a David Villa pass into the net to give the Bats the lead. However, Atletico would respond just seven minutes later with a cracking strike off the foot of Maxi Rodriguez to tie the game. David Villa would tip the momentum back in Valencia's favor 3 minutes later with a just onside breakaway shot into the net. 2-1 Valencia and the best was yet to come.
Just 6 minutes after Villa's heroics, Atletico striker Raul Garcia added his own flair for accrobatics bicycle kicking a Diego Forlan pass past keeper Renan to tie the game. The goals were not done there however as new starter Manuel Fernandes finished a long rush with a strike to the top corner, 3-2 Valencia going into halftime.
Out of the gates in the second half, Atletico's plan was attack, attack, attack but that backfired when they let David Silva get loose for an easy goal. 4-2 Valencia. From then on the Bats would play a very defensive game to lock away the win, their second of the young La Liga season.

The Push for the Playoffs
What is the Push for the Playoffs?
Everyone knows that the month of September is baseball's most important month, where teams finalize the playoff picture, where every game means something, where for the teams that are out of the playoff picture it is time to call up their prized prospects. Throughout the month of September and early October we will follow only the most compelling games that will ultimately shape the playoff picture in major league baseball.
How does it work?
This franchise is not exclusively about the Toronto Blue Jays anymore. Every night I will be playing one game that I conclude to be important to the playoff race in addition to the nightly Jays' game. Comments are apperciated as this will be a large amount of work.
What teams are involved?
The team's have been carefully analyzed and we have come up with a list of team's that we will primarily follow. Remember, if any team goes on a big run to get into the picture we WILL cover that team as well. This goes the other way, if one of these teams goes on a big losing streak they will not be covered anymore. The list is: Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins, Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Oakland Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies.
How will you determine what team's you will play as?
I will play as each team's offense in any given game that is featured and is the game happens to go into extra innings I will play as each team's pitching.
September.
It signals new beginnings. It is the month when school and the NFL starts while the Chinese New Year is coming to a close.
Baseball has it's own September beginnings in the form of the MLB playoff race that anually glues baseball fans from coast to coast to their televisions every night. Not only to do they follow their home town team but they glance anxiously towards the out of town scores knowing that all of these games matter.
It was only last season that the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies had a September surge to beat out the collapsing New York Mets in the National League East. Or how about in 2007 when the Colorado Rockies won 21 of 22 in September to face the San Diego Padres in a decisive game 163 in San Diego, the rest as they say, is history.
This year, 2009, expect a whole new batch of September heroes to emerge. Walkoffs, heartbreak, home runs... This IS September baseball.
Enjoy!
