      Championship Weekend

Chris: We're coming to you from the Georgia Dome where the SEC Championship will be played later between No. 1 Florida and No. 19 Alabama. Well, we had a big shake up two weeks ago as UCLA knocked off USC. We all had Florida and USC written in to play in Glendale but the upset has created some havoc in the polls. Now, all of a sudden Wisconsin is sitting pretty at No. 2. So there are two games today that will help decide who is in the BCS championship. One of the games is right here in Atlanta but the other one is in Kansas City where the Big-12 Champion will be decided between No. 6 Nebraska and No. 3 Texas. There are a bunch of different ways this could play out but Florida, Wisconsin, Texas, and Ohio State look like the teams that are most likely to get in. It is possible we could see two Big Ten teams in the championship if both Florida and Texas lose today. So do you guys think that's a possibility?

Kirk: If they both do fall today, then I would guess you would have to give it to Wisconsin and Ohio State. We had all written off Ohio State with their loss to USC.

Lee: I disagree with you Kirk. Why not give it to Nebraska who would only have one loss since they would have beaten Texas?

Chirs: Now, if Texas wins and Florida wins, does Texas jump Wisconsin?

Kirk: I don't think so. It's hard not to give it to the Badgers since they are undefeated and took care of business.

Lee: I think Texas could jump them but I don't think they should.

Chris: Alright, time for the picks guys. First up is the Big-12 Championship. Who wins today?

Kirk: Texas will be without HB Vondrell McGee and their backup HB and they're going up against the No. 1 ranked rush defense in the country. That is why I'm picking Nebraska to win.

Lee: Not so fast my friend! Texas has all kinds of athletes. Nebraska will not be able to stop the Longhorns' offense and the Longhorns' defense will hold Nebraska's offense a bit better. Longhorns win by at least ten points but it should be high scoring.

Chirs: Alright. That leaves this one we have here in the Georgia Dome. (Crowd cheers.)

Kirk: There might not be a better coach in the country to have on a big game than Nick Saban and that is why I'm picking 'Bama to win an extremely close one over the Gators.

Lee: You know those Gators have WR Deonte Thompson and HB Chris Rainey? And that defense...how about that defense. They have looked amazing but the Gators did not look too impressive against Florida State two weeks ago. I think Saban can get them today, and I'm picking...(Lee gets out the Big Al headgear and puts it on.) Go 'Bama! Roll Tide! (Mixed crowd reaction of cheers and boos.)

            Oregon State (7-5) heading to
Brut Sun Bowl vs #16 West Virginia (11-1)

Oregon State will be heading to the Brut Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas where they will play No. 16 West Virginia. The Mountaineers finished tied with No. 8 South Florida with an 11-1 record atop the Big East but WVU's one loss came against USF so they came up just short of winning their conference. The Beavers are coming off of their biggest win of the season against their rival, Oregon, in the Civil War. It has been a season of ups and downs for Oregon State as they finished the regular season with a mediocre 7-5 record. It will be interesting to see how a struggling OSU defense can do against a WVU offense that gets a lof of big plays on the ground. Oregon State tends to give up a lot of big plays on the ground so it might appear that this could be one of the bigger mismatches of the bowl season. This might be the best team besides maybe USC that Oregon State has faced this season.

              ESPN College Football
              Brut Sun Bowl Preview

Oregon State (7-5) vs #16 West Virginia (11-1)

Rece: I'm Rece Davis and with me as always is Mark May and Lou Holtz. Well, the bowl season rolls on. We'll get you out to El Paso for coverage of the Brut Sun Bowl in a few moments but first we need to preview the game. Mark, who are you picking in this one?

Mark: Oregon State is a team that is way too inconsistent to compete in this one today. This is a Beaver team that lost to San Diego State and Utah. That is two Mountain West teams. And now they're suppose to beat West Virginia. I don't think so. The Mountaineers rank No. 2 in turnover differential and are No. 7 in total defense. The Beavers just don't match up well in this one. OSU gives up way too many big plays on defense and is too inconsistent on offense. I think West Virginia will run all over that OSU defense and Oregon State will get blown out.

Lou: I could not disagree more.

              Mark: Oh, that's a surprise.

Lou: Mark is overlooking Oregon State's head coach Mike Riley. Riley has only lost one bowl game in his entire career. The Beavers always play well in bowl games and tend to get up for these big games. Plus, I don't think West Virginia's corners can cover OSU's receivers. Oregon State has a receiver by the name of Darrell Catchings. He might be one of the most underrated receivers in the country. Oregon State's receivers will run circles around West Virginia's secondary and the Beavers will stop a one-dimensional West Virginia offense. Oregon State will win a close one today.

Rece: I'll add a little bit of history as Oregon State was able to win the last time they were in the Sun Bowl when Mike Riley bet the farm at the end of the game, going for two at the end of regulation, beating an up and coming Missouri team. That OSU team had Matt Moore and Yvenson Bernard. Will this game match the excitement of the last time the Beavers were in the Sun Bowl? Let's send it out to Chris Fowler and company to find out.

                Brut Sun Bowl
Oregon State (7-5) vs #16 West Virginia (11-1)

El Paso, TX - After a disastrous opening season for Oregon State, the Beavers still found a way to get to a rather decent bowl, but now they would face a one-loss West Virginia team that came so close to making a BCS bowl. It would appear that it would be a mismatch from the start.

Oregon State came out passing as the Beavers were facing one of the top rushing defenses in the country. OSU QB Bryan Rossner hit WR Darrell Catchings on a post over the middle of the field for a 25-yard gain. The reception gave Catchings the team-record for most receptions in a single season with 82 receptions, eclipsing the 81 receptions held by Sammie Stroughter. The opening drive for OSU would stall as West Virginia was able to get pressure on Rossner leading to a sack that would set up a 42-yard field goal to put Oregon State on top 3-0.

West Virginia was held to a three-and-out on their opening possession but WVU head coach Bill Stewart called for a fake and the upback took it for a first down. However, the Mountaineers were still forced to punt. On the ensuing possession for the Beavers, Rossner threw a dumpoff pass to HB Marvin Quinn who broke a tackle, headed to the sideline, broke another tackle, and was off to the races, taking it to the house for a 76-yard reception as OSU was out in front 10-0.

OSU HB Marvin Quinn breaks two tackles for a 76-yard touchdown reception.

Highlight-OSU HB Marvin Quinn 76-yard td reception

West Virginia finally got in rythm on offense, getting their run game going, and WVU HB Terrence Kerns would find the endzone on a 2-yard touchdown run to keep it close as it was now only 10-7 OSU.

On the ensuing possession, the Beavers were knocking on the door, in the red zone again, as Rossner was picking apart the WVU defense, and Quinn was running hard. That was until Rossner tried to throw to an open Catchings in a curl route, but the ball was off target and intercepted by WVU true freshman CB Ben Long to stop the Beavers from scoring.

Oregon State would have another drive stall in West Virginia territory that led to a 52-yard field goal that went off the cross bar. West Virginia would tack on a 51-yard field goal on their next possession to tie the game 10-10. This was turning into an old fashioned defensive game.

Oregon State would find themselves at the WVU 8-yard line on 4th-and-inches where OSU head coach Mike Riley decided to go for it instead of kicking a field goal. The gamble paid off as Quinn bulled forward for a 7-yard gain. It would lead to a 2-yard touchdown run by FB Ryan McCants to put Oregon State ahead 17-10. A big upset was in the making as the game went to halftime with Oregon State ahead.

OSU FB Ryan McCants puts the Beavers back on top with a 2-yard touchdown run.

The Beavers were content with the lead as they played possession football. Quinn would take carry after carry, and Rossner would just try to keep the chains moving. The drive would eventually stall, leading to a an OSU 34-yard field goal to put the Beavers up 20-10.

On the defensive side for the Beavers, OSU was giving no respect to West Virginia's recievers. OSU CBs David Ross and Mike Mayes played man coverage on just about every play as OSU was stacking the box to stop the run. The scheme was working as WVU QB Bradley Starks was unable to beat the OSU secondary for any big gains. This allowed the OSU front seven to stuff the potent West Virginia ground game.

As the 4th quarter started, Oregon State would get the ball back and attempt a 38-yard field goal but K Justin Kahut kicked it wide right. Though West Virginia just could not get anything going as the Beavers' defense was playing as well as they have all season. The Beavers continued milking the clock, tacking on another field goal from 31 yards out to put Oregon State ahead 23-10. It was not pretty but it was effective.

Again, West Virginia did nothing with the ball. OSU HB Marvin Quinn was able to eclipse the 1,000 yard mark for the season on the last drive and was above 100 yards for the game but lost a few yards late to finish with 97 yards, just short of 100 yards. The Beavers would finish off the upset in unexciting fashion as it did appear to be a mismatch, just not the mismatch the "experts" thought as Oregon State won the Sun Bowl 23-10.

                      BCS National Championship: Glendale, AZ
                      #2 Wisconsin (12-0) vs #1 Florida (13-0)

Chris: We are here in Glendale, Arizona where in just a few minutes Wisconsin and Florida will get underway to decide the National Championship. The craziness that is College Football, has continued into the BCS bowls. A game many were looking forward to was a rematch of USC and Ohio State. Well, it turned out to be a sleeper as Ohio State took USC out to the woodshed and put a whipping on the Trojans 52-21.

Lee: Yeah...boy. That Terrelle Pryor lit up the Trojans for five touchdowns. Zip zip zip, he threw it all over the field. Really nice performance.

Kirk: Pete Carroll needs to do a better job of getting his team fired up for these bowl games. They came out and just played flat. This is not characteristic of Trojan football. I think they were still feeling the pain of losing to their rival, UCLA. I know it is not the championship, but you got to come out and play hard or this is what can happen.

Chris: USC has now lost two bowls in a row as they lost to TCU last year in the Rose Bowl. Speaking of TCU, they were involved in a game right here in this stadium last night in the Fiesta Bowl. We all thought that Texas would have this one over by halftime as nobody gave TCU a chance. Well, it turned out to be one of the most exciting games as TCU pulled it out and actually beat Texas 34-31. The Horned Frogs can officially proclaim themselves the best team in Texas.

Kirk: What an incredible achievement for TCU to win two BCS bowls in a row over two of the most prestigious teams in the nation. My hats are off to that program.

Lee: Yep yep. We have to give this team respect. It will be interesting to see what they do next season. I say TCU has a chance to compete to be in the BCS championship next year. Mark it down.

Chris: Alright. We've got a little game here that we need to get the picks for. What are the predictions guys?

Kirk: Florida has the second highest scoring team in the nation and this sounds like a broken record but with guys like HB Chris Rainey and WR Deonte Thompson, Florida is really tough to stop. Florida QB John Brantley has had a terrific season, throwing for 40 touchdowns. But it is that defense that sets them apart, OLB A.J. Jones has had some monster performances, and DE Carlos Dunlap puts the pressure on every QB. I could go on and on about this team but it really comes down to...Florida just looks unstoppable for this Wisconsin team. I say the Badgers lose big.

Lee: Kirk, you're forgetting about Wisconsin's QB Curt Phillips. He has only thrown four interceptions and has 20 touchdowns. That is really impressive. And they got a HB by the name of Will Pittman. He's good too, boy. Wisconsin is a good team. There's a reason they're undefeated...but they are going up against a jugernaut today. The Gators are playing some fantastic football. Urban Meyer is going to have those speed demons running all around the field. And with that fast field turf, Rainey is going to look like a blur flying around the field today. The Gators will prove that they are the best team in the nation today. Give me that! (Lee puts on the Gator headgear and does the gator chomp to a the sound of mixed cheers and boos.) Go Gators!

                        BCS National Championship
                        #2 Wisconsin (12-0) vs #1 Florida (13-0)

Glendale, AZ - Florida came into this game as huge favorites as they have clearly looked like the best season all season. The Gators would be coming into the championship game with the second highest scoring offense in the nation and were able to get through the toughest conference, the SEC, unscathed. For Wisconsin, it has been a different story. The Badgers just kept winning all season as all of the other top teams fell. When USC fell to UCLA, Wisconsin was the last team standing with an undefeated record besides the Gators. It did appear that the Badgers were overmatched. However, the last time the Gators were on this stage, they were defeated by the Ohio State Buckeyes who man-handled them. Could the same thing happen to the Gators again against another Big Ten team?

The stadium seemed really pumped from the very beginning for this game and the noise the Gator fans were making seemed to have Wisconsin QB Curt Phillips rattled as he did not look good early, leading to a three-and-out on the Badgers' first possession. Florida QB John Brantley looked unprepared early as he threw a terrible pass that was not anywhere near his receiver. The result was an interception by Wisconsin SS#39 who took it back for a pick-six. The Badger fans erupted as they had just taken a 7-0 lead over the Gators.

                        Highlight-Wisconsin SS#39 pick-six

Brantley did not seem to be phased by the pick-six he had just thrown. The Gators started going with their option offense as Brantley was doing most of the running. The Florida QB would lead his team to a 55-yard field attempt that was drilled though the uprights to put the Gators on the board down 7-3.

Wisconsin QB Curt Phillips continued to look rattled by the atmosphere as the Badgers were forced to punt after another three-and-out. Florida QB John Brantley started to get WR Deonte Thompson involved on the Gators' next possession. The Gators would get in position for a 45-yard field goal but it was kicked wide right. However, Wisconsin still could not do anything on offense as the punted again after three plays. On the ensuing possession, the Gators put together their best drive thus far but Wisconsin was able to make a big goalline stand, forcing a Florida 21-yard field goal to make it 7-6 Wisconsin as the first quarter came to an end.

It was apparent that the Gators were out of rythm on offense and were not playing the way they had most of the season. Wisconsin would finally make a play on offense when the explosive sophomore HB Will Pittman took a toss to the outside, breaking three tackles speeding downfield for a 39-yard gain to the Florida 23-yard line.

The big run would lead to an impressive pass from Phillips to his TE#86, who made the catch on the sideline of the endzone just barely keeping one foot in bounds to put Wisconsin up 14-6 on the 10-yard touchdown pass.

Wisconsin TE#86 cathes the ball in the endzone, keeping one foot in bounds.

The Gators seemed to energized, feeling the pressure that Wisconsin had actually taken an 8-point lead as Brantley chucked one deep to WR#87 who jumped up between two defenders, making the catch for a 42-yard gain.

Brantley would take advantage of the big gain getting the Gators into the red zone. However, just as it appeared the Gators were about to get into the endzone, Brantley threw a ball into the flat to red-shirt freshman WR Kurt Howard, but it was picked off, ending the scoring opportunity for the Gators. Although Wisconsin could only manage another three-and-out and the Gators would get a 30-yard field goal in the last seconds of the half to make it 14-9 Wisconsin at halftime. One got the feeling that Florida could not play any worse and the Badgers were only up by five points.

It is hard to know what Florida head coach Urban Meyer said to his team at halftime but it did not take long for the Gators to respond as red-shirt freshman WR Kurt Howard got the ball on a fly sweep, broke a tackle and took it to the house for a 49-yard touchdown. Just like that, the Gators had taken the lead 17-14 as the 2-point conversion was successful.

Now the pressure was on the Badgers as for the first time Wisconsin was behind. Wisconsin QB Curt Phillips would throw deep to WR Isaac Anderson who jumped up and made the catch and was upended out of bounds for a 36-yard gain. The play was ruled a catch but it appeared he never got a foot in bounds. However, the play was not reviewed. The big play would set up a 55-yard field goal but the ball fell just short of the crossbar.

Highlight-Wisconsin WR Isaac Anderson 36-yard gain

The Gators would respond with an unimpressive three-and-out. However, the Gator defense was starting to get some serious pressure on Phillips and getting sacks, forcing another Badger punt which Florida HB Chris Rainey took back for a touchdown but there was holding on the play so it was called back. It did not matter though as Brantley was able to get the Gators back in the red zone when he connected on a screen to Rainey for a 24-yard gain. It would set up a 3-yard touchdown pass from Brantley to WR Deonte Thompson to put the Gators further ahead 24-14.

Wisconsin needed to counter back but the Badgers had another three-and-out. It was not looking good for Wisconsin as the Gator offense was getting in gear as Brantley hit Rainey for a 13-yard touchdown pass to put the Gators up 31-14 going into the fourth quarter.

Florida HB Chris Rainey with a 13-yard touchdown reception.

The Badgers would be forced to go for it on fourth down from their own side of the field as it was no surprise to anyone that they were again unable to get a first down on three plays. Unfortunately for the Badgers, they were unsuccessful. Luckily for Wisconsin, Brantley would give them another chance as a screen pass to Rainey was deflected and intercepted. Although Wisconsin was unable to take advantage of the opportunity. Florida DE Carlos Dunlap would record his 14th sack of the season as he broke the team record for most sacks in a season.

Florida would hold Wisconsin again on a fourth down attempt and tack on a 56-yard field goal to make it a 34-14 final as the Gators woke up in the second half and whipped an overmatched Badger team. Urban Meyer took a gatorade bath as the Gators won the BCS National Championship.

The new recruiting class for Oregon State comes in rated as the No. 24 rated class. Four-star WR Brian Horn from Quebec, Canada is considered the biggest pickup for the Beavers but will probably not see the playing field for quite a while. Oregon State also signed a four-star QB out of a junior college in San Rafael, California. Rogers will almost definitely be red-shirted as the Beavers have a lot of depth at the QB position. Rogers is bigger with more athletic talent than the current OSU QB Bryan Rossner, but Rogers is not as good as a passer as Rossner.

Two offensive players that should have an immediate impact are four-star T Jason Rushing from El Cajon, California and three-star G Justin Smith from West Odessa, Texas. The Beavers will likely have both of these offensive linemen starting as true freshman as there is only one returning starter on the offensive line from last season. OSU head coach Mike Riley was most excited in getting Smith to join the team. "We were surprised that nobody had given Justin any offers so we made him an offer in the offseason and started recruiting him after we scouted him," Riley said. "Smith is really talented for his age and I can't wait to start working with him." From listening to Riley, it looks like he may have found a gem that nobody else gave the time of day.

On the defensive side, Oregon State acquired a four-star DT, Lee King from East Norriton, Pennsylvania, who has a good chance to start as a true freshman. Also, the Beavers received a commitment from four-star OLB Carlos Matthews from El Monte, California who will also have a chance to start next season.
