          #18 Oregon State (8-2) at Stanford (3-7)

Palo Alto, CA - Oregon State is coming off of its best win of the season after beating a one-loss UCLA team. Now, the Beavers would look to keep it rolling against another struggling Pac-10 team, Stanford. Though the Cardinal did take USC all the way to the wire, only to lose 27-21 so this is a team that can not be taken lightly. Stanford is still without their starting HB#25 and QB Andrew Luck has been out with a broken foot. However, Luck was listed as probable and would end up starting for the Cardinal.

With Luck under center for the Cardinal, Stanford looked decent on offense on their opening drive. But the drive would come to a halt when freshman DE Brandon Webb came up with a big sack in the red zone to force a Stanford 35-yard field goal as the Cardinal were on top early 3-0. The Beavers would counter back quickly, looking as good as ever when QB Bryan Rossner threw to WR Alex Whitehead, running a slant in the end zone. Whitehead made the catch for a 14-yard touchdown to give Oregon State a 7-3 lead.

OSU QB Bryan Rossner throws to WR Alex Whitehead for a 14-yard touchdown.

However, Stanford continued not looking like a 3-7 squad as QB Andrew Luck would hit WR Devin Williams in the red zone for a 3-yard touchdown to regain the lead for Stanford, 10-7.

Stan QB Andrew Luck hits WR Devin Williams for a 3-yard touchdown.

As the 2nd quarter got underway, OSU HB Jacquiz Rodgers was unable to make a first down in Stanford territory as the run game for Oregon State seemed to really miss HB Marvin Quinn. As a result the Beavers were forced to punt. Stanford would now find themselves deep on their own side of the field where Luck threw one of his worst passes of his career. The ball was lobbed up over the middle of the field where a host of OSU defensive backs had their opportunity to make the interception. FS Matt Arnold came down with the pick to set the Beavers up with great field position.

OSU FS Matt Arnold comes down with the interception off of the ill-advised pass by Stan QB Andrew Luck.

It would not take Rossner very long to capitalize off the turnover when he found TE Adam Banks over the middle of the field. Banks made the catch, broke a tackle, and fought his way in for a 17-yard touchdown to put the Beavers up 14-10.

OSU TE Adam Banks fights his way in for a 17-yard touchdown.

On the next possession for the Cardinal, the Beavers' defense stopped them to a three and out. A methodical drive by Oregon State would be held at the Stan 5-yard line where OSU kicker Reggie Smith kicked a 21-yard chip-shot to give the Beavers a 17-10 lead at halftime.

The Beavers looked like they were in good shape to start the 2nd half as they would get the ball first. However, OSU returner Alex Whitehead got the ball jarred loose and Stanford recovered it for a huge turnover to start the half. The Stanford crowd came to life but the OSU defense came up with a major three and out to force a Cardinal 50-yard field goal attempt which came up no good. The Beavers had dodged a bullet. However, Oregon State was also not so sharp on offense either, leading to a punt. Finally, Stanford HB Jason Garrett broke loose to the outside for a 43-yard gain where OSU OLB Carlos Matthews was able to run him down to prevent a touchdown. But the Cardinal were in business at the OSU 37-yard line.

Stan HB Jason Garrett breaks loose for a 43-yard gain.

It looked like Stanford was about to score when Luck threw to a receiver on a slant, where OSU SS Courtney Smith jumped the route to make a huge interception. Then took off, taking it all the way back for a pick-six, stunning the Stanford faithful who were hoping the Cardinal would tie. Instead, Oregon State was now further ahead 24-10 with the interception return.

OSU SS Courtney Smith with a game-changing pick-six.

Stanford QB Andrew Luck would dust himself off and get back to work where he led his team into the red zone. But OSU DE Brandon Webb came up with another big sack to force a 37-yard field goal to cut the lead to 24-13 as the 3rd quarter came to an end.

The Beavers would look to close out the game by trying to run the clock out. However, OSU HB Jacquiz Rodgers was unable to pick up a first down. But Stanford would have another drive cut short because of an OSU sack, leading to a Stanford 48-yard field goal attempt which fell short of the crossbar. That would essentially put this one in the books as Oregon State took care of business against a team that they should beat with a 24-13 win.

            Week 13

            (2)USC Defeats (12)Notre Dame 49-35

USC HB Curtis McNeal celebrates his 3rd touchdown.

Los Angeles, CA - This was supposed to be a low scoring affair between two of the top defenses in the nation. It did not turn out that way at all. The game started out disastrously for the Irish as they found themselves down 14-0 after USC QB Xavier Miller threw a touchdown and then ND QB Joe Davis followed it up with a pick-six. However, the Irish stormed back as HB David Olsen led the way with a 52-yard touchdown run in which he trucked over a Trojan defender. Olsen would follow it up with a 10-yard touchdown run to tie the game up. But then USC HB Curtis McNeal took over the game, scoring three touchdowns to put USC in front comfortably. It would be 42-21 USC at the end of the 3rd quarter. Somebody needs to figure out why McNeal is not on the Heisman watch list. Maybe he is being slighted because he runs behind the best offensive line in the country. However, despite McNeal's great three touchdown, 200 yard performance, he was outshined by ND HB David Olsen's five touchdowns in a futile effort. USC was clearly the best team on the field and has put themselves in place to play for a national title if they can beat UCLA next week.

USC is 11-0 and ranked #2. With a win over UCLA next week, they should put themselves in position to play in the national title. I will PM you my sliders when I get a chance.

                  Game of the Week

                  #7 Penn State (10-1) at #4 Texas (10-1)

Chris: Welcome to Austin for one of the most anticipated late-scheduled games of the season. We were looking at this one earlier in the season as a game that might determine who plays in the national title, but both Penn State and Texas come in with one loss. And with Clemson, USC, and BYU still undefeated, it is looking like these two will find themselves on the outside, looking in. But there is still some time to go yet, and you never know how the conference championships will play out. I just mentioned USC. The Trojans have a huge game against rival UCLA that will likely determine whether they go to the championship. After an impressive showing against Notre Dame, it seems like the Trojans should have no problem taking care of business against the rival Bruins. We'll get to these games and more, including a big one down in Florida when we get back.

#20 Florida at #15 Florida State
                  Kirk: FSU Lee: Florida

                  #2 USC at #23 UCLA
                  Kirk: USC Lee: USC

Chris: So guys, that brings us to this little shin-dig we have here in Texas. [crowd goes nuts as a "DJ Grant for Heisman" sign goes up] A win for either team does get them closer to a chance at getting to the BCS championship. Especially for Texas. Both teams suffered close losses. Penn State lost to Wisconsin and Texas lost to rival Oklahoma. [crowd boos] So who wins today?

Kirk: Texas comes into today's game with one of the top offenses in the nation and with the best rush defense in the nation. That is a lethal combination. The Longhorns have the leading contender for the Heisman in WR DJ Grant, who is just putting up phenomenal numbers. Let me take a look at my cheat sheet here...Grant comes in with 98 receptions, 1323 yards receiving, and 21 touchdowns. With numbers like that, it is hard to pick against the Longhorns and that is exactly who I'm going with. [crowd cheers as another "DJ for Heisman" sign is shown]

Lee: You are absolutely right sweetheart. Grant is having a great season. He's really terrific. But the guy that gets overshadowed is QB James Minor, who is allowing Grant to put up those kinds of numbers. And here's the thing, Penn State boasts the nation's top defense and 2nd best pass defense. Which is why I'm going with... [Lee puts on the Nittany Lion headgear as the crowd boos wildly] Go Penn State! Go Nittany Lions!

                        Civil War
                        Oregon (7-4) at #17 Oregon State (9-2)

Corvallis, OR - It is Civil War time again already. Both teams come in with pretty good records but Oregon State has really looked like a much better team this year. Despite a 7-4 record, Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti is starting to feel the hot seat from Duck fans. Fortunately for Bellotti, the success of the Ducks in the Civil War against the Beavers has allowed him to keep his job. A win for Oregon State could get the Beavers into the Holiday Bowl, but that proved unlikely as Arizona State would have to fall to one-win Arizona. So it looked like the Beavers would be heading right back to El Paso in the Sun Bowl for the third time in a row. Because of that fact, Reser did not seem to have that much energy but it was still the biggest game of the year. The weather would not play a factor as it was a beautiful clear sky over Corvallis.

The Ducks looked like they had something going early on but their opening drive stalled, leading to a 50-yard field goal attempt that was hooked off the upright. From that point both teams could not get anything going on offense as both Oregon and Oregon State punted back and forth. Finally, OSU QB Bryan Rossner broke the monotany when he threw deep to WR Brian Herring for a 39-yard gain on the last play of the 1st quarter.

OSU QB Bryan Rossner to WR Brian Herring for a 39-yard gain.

Oregon State was in position to score a touchdown with the big reception but Rossner would be sacked on back-to-back plays as the Beavers were forced to kick a 43-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead. On the ensuing drive for the Beavers, Rossner was sacked again and lost control of the ball. Fortunately, the Beavers recovered. Then Rossner decided to try going deep again to Herring who was in single coverage. Herring leaped up and made the catch in the end zone for a 34-yard touchdown to give Oregon State a 10-0 lead.

OSU WR Brian Herring comes down with a 34-yard bomb from QB Bryan Rossner.

Then disaster would strike for the Ducks when Oregon QB Calvin Jackson was picked off by OSU CB Mike Mayes. Oregon State looked like they were going to make this one a laugher.

OSU CB Mike Mayes picks off Oregon QB Calvin Jackson.

The Beavers had an excellent drive going until Rossner was sacked again but this time the Hawaian did not get up and was forced to leave. In came the backup QB Ryan Katz who was pressured and fumbled the ball when he was sacked, which the Ducks recovered. The turnover seemed to have given the Ducks some life.

OSU QB Ryan Katz loses control of the ball as the Ducks recover the fumble.

The Ducks finally started to convert some third downs when QB Calvin Jackson made some good scrambles to keep the drive alive. However, the Ducks would give the ball up on downs just inside OSU territory as the game went to halftime with Oregon State dominating but only leading 10-0.

The Beavers would strike fast to open the second half with an impressive drive. OSU HB Jacquiz Rodgers was having a decent game as he was finding some running room. Finally, Rossner would playfake to Rodgers, then roll out where he found his tailback. Rodgers made the catch, broke a tackle, and fought his way forward, lunging the ball out across the goal line for a 23-yard touchdown to give the Beavers a commanding 17-0 lead.

OSU HB Jacquiz Rodgers gets the ball across the goal line on a 23-yard touchdown reception.

Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti could feel the game getting away and that must have been why he decided to call a fake punt on the Ducks' next possession, which failed when the back was unable to get back to the line of scrimage. The Beavers were now in a postition to put this game away with the great field position. Everything was going well until Rossner tried to fit a ball to WR Brian Herring but Oregon ROLB#59 made a terrific play on the ball, leaping up to make the interception. The Ducks were not dead yet.

Oregon ROLB#59 with an amazing interception.

However, the Oregon offense was still unable to take advantage of the turnover, punting after a three and out. Oregon State would also be forced to give the ball up when Rossner was sacked on two consecutive plays as the 3rd quarter came to an end.

Again, the Ducks could not accomplish anything on offense. The Beavers seemed to have no trouble stopping the spread offense of the Ducks as Oregon was forced to punt from their own end zone. But another OSU drive would be brought to an end by a Duck sack, which would be their ninth of the game. As a result of the sack, Oregon State was forced to kick a 37-yard field goal to make it 20-0 OSU.

Oregon sensed that they had to score quickly and QB Calvin Jackson tried to throw over the middle but OSU OLB Cole Alexander was there for an easy interception. OSU HB Jacquiz Rodgers was able to get the necessary first downs to keep the clock running and the Beavers pulled off a shutout against the rival Ducks. Bellotti will surely feel that seat growing hotter with this pathetic offensive effort.

OSU OLB Cole Alexander ends any chance at a Duck come back with this interception.

                          Week 14

(7)Penn State Wins in Final Seconds Over (4)Texas
                          38-35

Penn State kicks the 38-yard game-winning field goal with :05 left in the game.

Austin, TX - In what turned out to be one of the best games of the year, the Nittany Lions escaped Austin with a huge win over the Longhorns. It looked like Penn State would run away with this one early on as PSU QB Evan McKinley had four touchdown passes at halftime, but because of PSU turnovers, the Longhorns were only down 28-14 at halftime. The Longhorns continued to take advantage of PSU turnovers in second half. It looked like Texas was going to tie the game in 4th quarter when HB Foshwitt Whitaker was about to cross the goal line, but PSU FS David Keisling was able to strip him of the football just before he crossed the goal line. Nittany Lion CB Stephen Carter picked it up and took it all the way back to the house as Penn State was suddenly up 35-21. That would be the difference in the end. However, Texas QB James Minor was able to hit freshman WR Ryan Oliver for two late touchdowns to tie the game 35-35 with 3:16 remaining. But it would be PSU QB Evan McKinley that would get the Nittany Lions in position to kick the game-winning 38-yard field goal.

                            QB Tye Moore

                            QB Tye Moore 4* #16
                            Biddeford, ME
                            Committed: Oregon State

The Beavers landed their first two commitments in four-star QB Tye Moore from Biddeford, Maine and a three-star ATH Derek Holmes from Medford, Oregon. Moore was a guy that the Beavers had been targeting all season. It looked like he was going to go to Northwestern but he decided after the Civil War visit to play in Corvallis. Moore has exceptional intelligence and a pretty good arm but he does need to work on his accuracy. Look for him to be red shirted behind QBs Justin Rust and Phil Rodgers.

                                MLB Jesse Burns

                                Committed: Oregon State

Oregon State received another commitment from four-star MLB Jesse Burns. With MLB Paul Jones graduating, the Beavers do not have a whole lot of depth at middle linebacker position. Burns fills an important need for the Beavers. Burns could maybe see playing time right away playing behind MLB Casey Wright, but do not be surprised if he is red shirted.
