Game of the Week
#4 Florida State (9-0) at #1 Clemson (9-0)

Chris: Welcome to the home of Howard's Rock where we have probably the biggest game of the year so far as #4 Florida State and #1 Clemson will try to claim the top spot in the Coastal division of the ACC, and more importantly will keep their national championship hopes alive. This one is already starting to have a championship feel to it. College Football lacks a true playoff system, but it is the games like this that act as this sport's playoff system. In addition to this huge ACC battle, both #2 USC and #3 Texas will also be tested. The Longhorns will take on the Red Raiders of Texas Tech which there is guaranteed to be a lot of points scored. And #2 USC will try to make it four in a row against the Beavers of Oregon State. Today will give us a better picture of who the real contenders are. But it is becoming a real possiblity that the ACC, the Big 12, and the Pac-10 could each have an undefeated team. But it is also possible that FSU and UCLA could be the top two teams in the nation after this weekend.

Chris: So this is an intriguing game in the Pac-10. The Beavers and the Trojans usually make for an entertaining football game, but the Trojans have now beat the Beavers three in a row after Oregon State had won back-to-back. Many still feel that USC is overrated and should not be able to get out of the Pac-10 undefeated. Despite a couple scares against Arizona and Oregon, they have managed to stay unbeaten. Can the Beavers change that today.

Kirk: You know Chris. I think they could. I actually think that the Beavers have better talent. However, USC has QB Xavier Miller and he has the experience to lead the Trojans to win games. And Oregon State traditionally does not play well in the Coliseum so I'm picking USC to win a really close game.

Lee: Kirk, I totally agree with everything you just said. Trojans win a close one down there. Not only will Miller have a good game but I think the USC defense is the best Oregon State has faced all year.

Chris: And now it's time to make your picks for this great matchup we have here today. Gary Crowton's defending national champion Clemson Tigers now have a 24-game winning streak. But the Seminoles will look to bring that streak to an end today as new head coach Jimbo Fisher has yet to lose. Bobby Bowden must be prowd of his long-time protege. Before we get to the picks, Erin Andrews has an injury update for both teams. Erin...


Erin: Yes, well first the good news for FSU is that DE Darrell Allen should be able to suit up and play today. It looks like he has just about fully recovered from his ACL sprain. But unfortunately, it looks like FSU HB Barry Horn, the explosive tailback will not be able to play today with that bruised shoulder. I've also been told that for Clemson, their fantastic MLB Lance Griffin will also be out today with a pinched nerve. So Tiger OLB Brent Cannon is going to have to step it up today. But Cannon told me he is up to the challenge and the defense is ready. I can tell you that both sides are amped up for this game. It means a lot to both teams.

Chris: Alright Erin. Thanks for that report. Well, the headgear is here so it's time to make your picks guys.

Kirk: Not having HB Barry Horn (96ovr) is a big blow for the 'Noles, but with that offensive line, it won't matter. I don't think FSU will struggle today because of their fantastic receiving corps and their outstanding offensive line. And with MLB Lance Griffin (93ovr) out of the game, that is just one more reason for me to believe that the Seminoles should be able to move the ball today. Plus, with a defense led by a top-five future draft pick, FS Paris Greene (99ovr), I fail to see how the 'Noles lose today and that is who I'm picking to win today.

Lee: Kirk, I think you are underestimating Gary Crowton's offense, but especially the defense. The Tigers still have one of the best linebackers in the nation with OLB Brent Cannon (97ovr) in there. And with QB Marcus Bates making plays and HB Joey Thomas moving the chains, and this great home crowd. I of course have to pick...(Lee pulls out the Seminole headdress as the crowd starts to boo in surprise) Ha! Not so fast! Are you kidding me?! (Lee throws the Seminole headdress wildly at Chris and puts on the Tiger headgear as the crowd cheers him on.) Go Tigers! Go Clemson!

#15 Oregon State (7-1) at #2 USC (7-0)

Los Angeles, CA - Since the loss to still undefeated UCLA, it seems a lot of the excitement for Beaver football was lost. But all is still not lost. However with a trip to the Coliseum to take on the Trojans and the Civil War being in Eugene, the postseason picture looks bleak for Oregon State. The Trojans have escaped usets against Oregon and Arizona already this year, but one had to assume that USC would bring their "A" game against the Beavers. A team that has given USC trouble in the past. There was a lot of anticipation for this one as it was televised on ABC to a national audience.

All the pundits were picking the Trojans to play well against the Beavers but on the opening possession, USC was forced to punt after a rather unsuccessful drive. On Oregon State's opening offensive play, the Coliseum was rocking. OSU QB Justin Rust handed it off to HB Roy Nolen who cut through a huge hole and then turned on the afterburners, outrunning the entire Trojan defense to the house for a 63-yard touchdown right out of the gate. Oregon State took the early lead 7-0.

Nolen had just started to garner some national attention the last few weeks. A 63-yard touchdown run against one of the best defenses in the nation could only help his cause. Despite the impressive run by Nolen, the Trojans responded when QB Xavier Miller hit HB Marvin Davis out of the backfield for a 2-yard touchdown to tie the game 7-7. We had a game on our hands now.

The Beavers would prove that they could move the ball in the traditional way, with a balanced offense to drive down the length of the field where HB Roy Nolen escaped a tackle in the backfield and scored a 3-yard touchdown for his second rushing touchdown of the first quarter to put OSU ahead 14-7.

But the Trojans quickly countered back as QB Xavier Miller threw a perfectly timed screen to HB Marvin Davis. The play was well executed and Davis showed off his great quickness, taking it 64 yards to the house. The game would be tied 14-14 as the first quarter came to an end.

Now the doubt had to be entering into the Beavers' heads as Oregon State was playing about as well as they possibly could and USC was just matching blow for blow. Finally, the tough USC defense showed up and sacked OSU QB Justin Rust twice to force Oregon State to punt for the first time. The Trojans looked like they would take advantage of the opportunity to take the lead as QB Xavier Miller had gotten the Trojans inside the red zone. But then Miller threw into coverage where OSU SS Courtney Smith came up with a huge interception. USC would hold the Beavers in the red zone as Oregon State would regain the lead 17-14 after a chip-shot was put through the uprights. It was only a few moments earlier that USC looked to be on the verge of taking the lead and now the Trojans trailed.

Then USC went three-and-out on the ensuing possession to allow the Beavers one last possession before the end of the first half. OSU QB Justin Rust led a great last minute drive finished off when he hit who else but HB Roy Nolen out of the backfield for an 11-yard touchdown reception to make it 24-14 OSU.

USC QB Xavier Miller would get the Trojans in position to attempt a 53-yard field goal and the kick sailed through the uprights as USC finally has a legitimate place kicker to cut the lead to 24-17 OSU right before halftime.

It looked like the Trojans might finally have met their match. Many had thought that the Trojans had gotten lucky to make it this far unbeaten. The Coliseum, sensing that the game might be getting away from the Men of Troy, stepped up its presence as the crowd became a significant factor. It possibly could have been a reason for the Beavers going three-and-out to start the third quarter. But a sack by OSU OLB Carlos Matthews forced a USC three-and-out also. On the ensuing possession for the Beavers, QB Justin Rust led a good drive until he was sacked in the red zone. Then Rust tried to connect with WR Alex Whitehead on a slant but USC CB Chris Richardson was in tight coverage. The ball was thrown a bit behind and Richardson came up with the interception. But USC would mimic the Beavers as the Trojans would have a decent drive going until OSU CB John Biggers came up with a big interception. On the next play, OSU HB Roy Nolen got the handoff up the middle, made a spin move, cut to the outside, outraced the Trojan defense to the sideline where he was off to the races to house it for a 47-yard touchdown scamper that Reggie Bush would have been prowd of. The highligh run gave OSU a commanding 31-17 lead.

To only make matters worse for the Trojans, QB Xavier Miller would be picked off again. This time OSU FS Scott Vinson would take it back for a pick-six to make it an incredible 38-17 lead for the Beavers.

Now the game moved into the fourth quarter and it was becoming apparent that the Beavers were going to win. It is difficult to figure out why everybody was behind the "B" overall rated USC Trojans as it was quite evident that the Beavers had the better athletes on the field today. USC QB Xavier Miller would look to get the Trojans back in the game and Pete Carroll decided to go for it on fourth-and-goal where USC WR Anthony Miller was taken down short of the goal line by OSU SS Courtney Smith. The play seemed to be a death nail for the Trojans as the fans started exiting the stadium.

The Trojans would get a late touchdown when QB Xavier Miller found a wide open HB Jason Martinez streaking down the field when the Beavers brought a rather aggressive blitz, leading to a defensive breakdown as Martinez scored on the 37-yard touchdown reception but it would not matter as the Beavers would be victorious over the the no. 2 ranked Trojans in the Coliesum with a 41-24 decisive win. This was a huge breakout game nationally for HB Roy Nolen. He will have to start getting more press after a performance like this. Now UCLA will be put into the top spot of the Pac-10 and the Bruins could even make a run for a national title.

Week 11

#1 Clemson Stays Undeated After Close 16-6 Win Over #4 Florida State

Clemson, SC - This was easily one of the most highly anticipated games of the year with two undefeated ACC teams fighting for a possible national title and a spot in the conference championship. But it was an old school defensive affair where neither offense could get anything going. Clemson had a thrilling 6-3 lead at halftime. But in the third quarter Tiger QB Marcus Bates threw to WR Malik Bennett on a screen pass for a 13-yard touchdown that gave Clemson a whopping 13-3 lead. That would be all that would be needed as a few field goals by both teams would bring it to a final score of 16-6. The defending national champions increase their winning streak to 25 games but they do not look like a team that is ready to win back-to-back titles with an offensive showing like that.

Oregon State received their second four-star prospect on the offensive line with T Bryan Townsend committing after the upset win over USC this weekend. The 6'4" 281 pound tackle out of Downey, California might lack the strength to be elite at the postition but he has excellent footwork in his run blocking. Plus Townsend excels in pass blocking. Townsend had actually just come back from a trip from Fresno State where the Bulldogs pounded Boise State 47-3 but it appears that the win over USC may have swayed his decision. "I've never really liked the Trojans too much but they are a heck of a team so when the Beavers went into the Coliseum and put the beat-down on them, I knew that is the kind of team I want to play for," said Townsend.

Erin: Chris, I've gotten word out of the Texas Tech trainers that their outstanding OLB Brandon Albin (94ovr) is listed as questionable and likely will not play today. I spoke to Mike Leach about it and he is not concerned about it at all. He is very confident his defense will make big plays today without Albin. Back to you guys...

Chris: Well, that is a tough break for the Red Raiders, but they are still pretty solid defensively. How does this one play out today?

Kirk: I know much of the talk today will be surrounding their fantastic freshman QB Brad Crenshaw (86ovr) who already has 35 touchdown passes and over 3,100 yards. (Crowd cheers as camera zooms in on a "Crenshaw for Heisman" sign) But the Sooners have a great defense. Not good but great led by MLB Marcus Rucker (99ovr). Also, Oklahoma has one of the most accurate QBs with TJ Lee leading the offense. I see the Sooners coming away with this one today. (Crowd boos)

Lee: I don't know Kirk. I'm with you. I think Crenshaw could face some adversity today. (Crowd boos) But don't forget, the Sooners' offensive line has been shaky this year and I think that Tech could give Lee some trouble today. This one really could go either way. I think whoever wins the turnover battle wins today. Judging by the way some of these other game of the weeks have gone, I expect many interceptions today. So I have to pick the...(Lee fires off an air cannon and put on the schooner hat as the crowd boos and Kirk can't contain his laughter) Boomer Sooner! Go Oklahoma!

Washington (4-5) at #12 Oregon State (8-1)

Corvallis, OR - The Beavers have been playing really well as of late mainly behind the beastly running of HB Roy Nolen who is now a Heisman contender. OSU is coming off of the biggest win of the year, finally beating USC. Oregon State is still in the race for the Pac-10 but their chances grow smaller every week that UCLA stays undefeated. The Huskies are Lane Kiffin seem to have started to turn the corner as they are on the verge of getting to a bowl game this year. So Washington is a dangerous team, looking for a win that gets them closer to being bowl eligible.

Washington head coach Lane Kiffin was out to get on the scoreboard first no matter what the cost as the Huskies successfully converted an early 4th down attempt at midfield that would eventually set up a 47-yard field goal attempt, but the kick was hooked to the right. The Beavers would open the game a bit shaky, but QB Justin Rust, on a playaction pass would hook up with WR Alex Whitehead deep over the middle, threading the needle between the zone. Whitehead would make the catch and show off his deceptive speed to take it to the house for a 56-yard touchdown. Oregon State was on top early 7-0.

Later, OSU was forced to punt after by two Husky sacks on Rust. On the return, Husky Ira Price took it all the way to the OSU 15-yard line. On the next play, Husky HB Luis Johnson slipped through the OSU defense, for a 15-yard touchdown scamper to tie the game 7-7.

Next, the Beavers would have a drive ended early when TE Adam Banks dropped a wide open pass. As the 2nd quarter opened, Husky HB Luis Johnson got loose again, this time for a 31-yard gain. Then QB Ryan Hogan connected with sophomore WR Peter Richardson in the end zone with tigh coverage as Washington went ahead 14-7.

It was looking good for the Huskies and the defense continued to play well, sacking Rust for the 4th time of the game, leading to another OSU three-and-out. Both teams were unable to get anything going for most of the quarter, but the Huskies looked like they were about to do something on offense. Then OSU DE Brandon Webb created some serious pressure to force Hogan into throwing a rushed pass that FS Scott Vinson was there to make the interception. Not long after the turnover, OSU HB Roy Nolen, after a quick spin was able to get to the outside, speeding down the sideline for a 38-yard touchdown run, tieing the game 14-14.

The Huskies were unable to counter back as they were forced to punt after another three-and-out. As the first half was nearing a close, OSU QB Justin Rust led a great drive despite the Huskies sacking him for the 5th time. Rust would hit WR Brian Herring on a crossing route. Herring would break a tackle and then walked into the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown to put the Beavers back on top 21-14 before the end of the first half.

It waas a tight game at halftime but OSU head coach Mike Riley earned his money with whatever he said to his team at the break. The Beavers came out with a fantastic, long, ten-play drive where QB Justin Rust found WR Bill Faaeteete with a playaction pass over the middle for a 13-yard touchdown to put Oregon State in front 28-14.

Now the Huskies looked like they were fighting an uphill battle against a superior team, going three-and-out. Washington would not see the ball again on offense in the 3rd quarter as Oregon State went on an even longer 13-play drive. As the 3rd quarter ended, the Beavers were one foot away from scoring. As the 4th quarter opened, OSU HB Roy Nolen hopped over for a 1-yard touchdown to make it 35-13.

The Beavers would tack on another field goal to make it 38-14. OSU FS Scott Vinson would get two more interceptions in the final quarter to give him three picks on the day. The last one he got off of a deflection. It would set up a 47-yard field goal as the Beavers took care of business, winning 41-14.

Texas Tech gets their 5th interception off of OU QB TJ Lee to end any chance for the Sooners to try and tie the game.

Lubbock, TX - Another low scoring game for the game of the week. This was really a terrible game from start to finish. There was not a single touchdown scored in the first half as the game was tied 6-6. It was not a great game for Tech QB Brad Crenshaw as he would leave the game in 2nd quarter with a bruised shoulder that apparently could keep out the emerging star for two weeks. That would leave the Red Raiders with another freshman to do the signal calling with QB Ryan Harrison. Also, OU HB Scott Buckles left the game early with an abdominal strain. But the story of the game was turnovers as OU QB TJ Lee threw a total of five interceptions. Tech QB Ryan Harrison would throw three interceptions but would also connect with WR TJ White for a 61-yard touchdown to put the Red Raiders on top 13-6. Oklahoma would find themselves down 16-6 in the 4th quarter before QB TJ Lee was able to scramble in for a 7-yard touchdown run to make it only 16-13 Texas Tech with only a few minutes left. The onside kick was unsuccessful, but thanks to horrendous A.I., the Sooners would get an interception to give Oklahoma one last chance to tie the game. But OU QB TJ Lee would throw his 5th interception inside the final minute of the game as the Red Raiders were able to hold on.

There is excitement in Corvallis after they got word that five-star DE Adam Bush from San Rafael, California had chosen the Beavers. His decision had come down to Fresno State and Oregon State in the last few weeks but the speed rusher has decided to come to Corvallis. It would not surprise anybody if Bush were to start next season with DE Brandon Webb on the opposite side. That will be one imposing pass rush for opposing teams to contain.
