DT Mark Crum 4* #11 DT
      South Gate, CA
      Committed: Oregon State

Four star DT Mark Crum has committed to the Oregon State Beavers after the shocking upset over the Trojans. "It was really exciting being at such an exciting game. Watching the students rush the field was cool. Heck...I even enjoyed the rain," Crum said after the game. Crum should help continue the success OSU has had on defensive line recently.

Oregon State (2-2) at Utah (3-2)

Salt Lake City, UT - After the shocking upset last week, it would be interesting to see whether the Beavers could continue their success. Utah QB Brian Johnson did not get off to a good start. On the Utes' first possession, Johnson threw into coverage where OSU MLB Bryant Cornell made the pick to jumpstart a Beaver drive. Oregon State QB Sean Canfield did not take long to capitalize on the turnover as he launched one deep downfield to WR Sammie Stroughter who had beat the man coverage. Stroughter caught the ball in stride and easily sped his way into the endzone on the 59 yard TD to give the Beavers an early 7-0 lead.

Beaver QB Sean Canfield launches the ball deep despite the Ute pressure for a 59 yard TD to WR Sammie Stroughter.

As the 2nd quarter got underway Utah would try and strike back but were unable to connect on a 53 yard field goal attempt. Canfield would waste no time finding Stroughter again on a short slant across the middle which he caught in stride and raced in for his second TD of the day to put Oregon State up 14-0.

The Utes would finally get on the scoreboard off of a 49 yard field goal to make it 14-3 OSU. The Beavers would sustain an injury to HB Jeremy Francis who left the game with a bruised sternum and was out for the remainder of the game. That put the responsibility in the hands of Patrick Fuller to carry the load but he too would get hurt. The Beavers would be down to their FB Ryan McCants to run the ball. Despite the injury, Canfield continued with an impressive passing attack. It was apparent that Utah could not cover Stroughter when Canfield found Stroughter again over the middle on a slant. Stroughter made the catch over the middle and then spun around and took it the full 59 yards for his third TD of the day giving the Beavers a 21-3 lead.

As the second half was coming to a close, OSU MLB Bryant Cornell would get his second interception of the game. The interception led to a nice two minute drill by Canfield which set up a 21 yard field goal to give the Beavers a 24-3 lead at the end of the first half.

OSU MLB Bryant Cornell with his second interception of the game.

Oregon State really slowed things down in the second half taking a lot of time off the clock. The Beavers would march down the field but would score only a 38 yard field goal to make it 27-3. As the 3rd quarter came to an end Utah found themselves in the red zone. HB Darrell Mack was able to get to the sideline and find the endzone on a 10 yard scamper to make it a game again. The Utes attempted a two point conversion but MLB Bryant Cornell made another big play as he made an impressive tackle to keep Mack out of the endzone on the screen pass which made it 27-9 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

OSU FB Ryan McCants made the most of his opportunity able to move the chains with a bruising running style. Canfield would make the necessary passes to move the chains when needed and OSU would get another field goal to put them ahead 30-9. The game was pretty much out of reach at that point but Ute QB Brian Johnson marched his team down the field and scored quickly on a 10 yard slant to WR#84 to make the score a respectable 30-16. The Utes would get the ball back but were pressed for time which led to an interception for SS Bryan Payton to seal this one shut for Oregon State.

Washington State (3-2) at Oregon State (3-2)

Corvallis, OR - The Cougars of Washington State came into Reser today with a surprising 3-2 record. Most thought the Cougars would finish at the bottom of the conference but so far they have proven the pundits wrong. As for the Beavers, they have turned things around with the upset over USC and defeating a solid Utah team. Now the conference play would get underway.

The Beaver defense shined early forcing a quick three and out. Oregon State capitalized on the good field position and HB Jeremy Francis found a hole from three yards out for a short TD scamper to give the Beavers the lead 7-0. The OSU defense would make a stand in the red zone forcing WSU to a field goal to make it 7-3 early on.

Oregon State really looked to be in rythm in the first half and actually getting a running game for once. This allowed a successful playfake where OSU QB Sean Canfield found the playmaker WR Sammie Stroughter on the deep pass for a 47 yard gain. This would set up a pass from Canfield to the corner of the endzone to Stroughter for a 12 yard TD and put OSU ahead 14-3. Stroughter seems to have finally found his way as he continued his success from the three touchdown performance against Utah.

Canfield finds Stroughter in the corner of the endzone and makes a perfect pass for a 12 yard TD.

On the next OSU possession, Canfield would hook up with his TE Gabe Miller over the middle of the field for a 12 yard TD to make it a 21-3 game. Canfield was not done there though as he would later find Stroughter on a short slant which the playmaker took 68 yards to the house to put OSU up 28-3. Washington State finally got back on the scoreboard when WSU 6'7" QB Gary Rogers hit WR Joshua Anderson for a short TD before halftime to make it 28-10 at the end of the half.

The Beavers were more than happy to sit on the lead and played quite conservatively in the second half. Though Stroughter did make another play with an easy 93 yard kick return for a TD. The Cougar punt coverage was not good and Stroughter just flew down the sideline for his third TD of the day.

Stroughter finds the endzone for the third time for the second week in a row this time on a 93 yard kick return.

OSU HB Jeremy Francis would rack up 125 yards on 25 carries and get his second TD which would easily make it his best performance of the season. WSU QB Gary Rogers would also rack up some stats finishing with 349 yards passing with two TDs and one rushing TD and standout Cougar WR Brandon Gibson would finish with 14 receptions and 147 yards as none of the OSU defensive backs could cover the future NFL receiver but it would not be enough as Oregon State would finish this one out 42-23.

            Washington State 23

QB Rogers: 35-41, 349 yds, 2 td, int, rustd
HB Tardy: 13 car, 42 yds
WR Gibson: 14 rec, 147 yds
MLB Trent: 8 tkl, 3 tfl, 2 ff

            Oregon State 42

            QB Canfield: 14-16, 250 yds, 3 td
HB Francis: 27 car, 125 yds, 2 td
WR Stroughter: 5 rec, 138 yds, 2 td, 93 yd krtd
            FS Afalava: 10 tkl, defl
CB Hughes: 3 tkl, tfl, int, defl

Oregon State (4-2) at Washington (3-2)

Seattle, WA - Oregon State faced off against the Washington Huskies under a cold, clear evening sky in Seattle, Washington. Surprisingly, the Beavers come into this game on top of the conference with a 3-0 conference record. The Pac-10 seems open for grabs this year as USC has stumbled. The OSU offense has been on fire as WR Sammie Stroughter has made play after play and QB Sean Canfield is growing up before our eyes this year. It is widely believed that Husky head coach Tyrone Willingham is on the hot seat this year and this would be one game that he needs to have to help his chances.

It did not start very well for the Huskies as Washington QB Jake Locker threw a strike to freshman WR#1 but the ball went threw his hands and into the hands of OSU CB Brandon Hughes for an early turnover. The momentum was on the side of Oregon State but then OSU HB Jeremy Francis went down with what was later determined to be a broken fibula. Francis should be out for at least five weeks. To make matters worse for the Beavers, Canfield threw a pick in the red zone.

Oregon State would come up with a big play near the end of 1st quarter when Canfield threw deep over the middle of the field to WR Kyle Brown who came up with a leaping catch. Then he was upended but held on to the ball for a 35 yard gain. Unfortunately the drive stalled and the Beavers kicked a field goal to take 3-0 lead as the 1st quarter came to an end.

The Huskies struck back with a nice drive of their own led by QB Jake Locker which was finished off with a short, goal line TD run by HB J.R. Hardy to give the Huskies the lead 7-3. However, Oregon State answered back with an efficient drive of their own finished off with a five yard TD run by HB Patrick Fuller to put the Beavers ahead 10-7.

OSU HB Jeremy Francis takes it across the goal line on the five yard scamper.

The pattern continued as neither defense could find an answer to stop the offense. Washington QB Jake Locker threw a short pass to WR#1 who was coming back from a hook pattern and OSU CB Brandon Hughes was unable to make the tackle. WR#1 easily made his way into the endzone for a 25 yd TD giving the Huskies a 14-10 lead.

OSU CB Brandon Hughes is unable to make the tackle, Husky WR#1 takes it in for a 25 yd TD.

The Beavers were able to get a field goal in the closing seconds of the first half to make it 14-13 Washington to end and exciting first half.

Oregon State QB Sean Canfield would go to what has worked best to get back in the game. Canfield faked a handoff to Fuller and threw deep downfield to WR Sammie Stroughter on a post route which the playmaker caught in stride for a 32 yard TD putting the Beavers back on top 20-14.

Washington QB Jake Locker was unable to match the Beavers this time as he threw an interception to OSU FS Al Afalava. The turnover set the Beavers up with good field position and Canfield was able to find Stroughter on a crossing route six yards out but the ball was thrown to far in front. However, Stroughter laid out for the ball and came down with it for his second TD reception of the game to put Oregon State in front 26-14 as the two point conversion failed.

Beaver WR Sammie Stroughter comes up with his second TD reception.

The Huskies were down but not out yet as a nice kick return put them at the OSU 25 yard line. However, Locker threw an interception to OLB Isaiah Cook which essentially put the game out of reach. The Huskies would find themselves in the red zone late in the game but Locker again threw an interception this time to CB Brandon Hughes for the defensive back's second interception of the game. The last turnover would officially end the game and give the Beavers a 26-14 victory.

#15 Arizona State (6-1) at Oregon State (5-2)

Corvallis, OR - The Beavers have been riding high lately on the momentum of their victory over the Trojans. However, despite Oregon State still sitting on top of the Pac-10 with an undefeated conference record, most analysts believed that it would come down to Arizona State, UCLA, USC, and Oregon. With the impressive win over Oregon, head coach Dennis Erickson and his Sundevils were ready to claim the title of top dog and a win over Oregon State would put them in a position to accomplish that objective. The game was even taken seriously by the national media as it was nationally telvised on ABC.

The conditions were ugly at Reser Stdium as the first day of November would bring a 33 degree temperature with a nice, cold downpoor of rain mixed with some freezing rain. The weather did not seem to be a factor early on for ASU as QB Rudy Carpenter moved his team well until the drive stalled and the Sundevils were forced to punt. However, OSU QB Sean Canfield on the third play of their possession threw a terrible pass that was picked off by CB#13 which was returned inside the five yard line. That is where Carpenter found his wide open TE #80 in the flat for a TD to put ASU up 7-0. ASU would also add a field goal on their next possession to put them ahead 10-0.

Sundevil QB Rudy Carpenter finds his TE in the flat to give ASU an early lead.

Oregon State could not get anything going on offense. Canfield was under a lot of pressure. The recievers were not getting open and there was a lack of a run game. On the other side, the Sundevils started to open up a run game with HB Keegan Herring. The speedy running back would eventually find the endzone on an impressive highlight run where he made a nice juke move to find the outside and was in the endzone before anybody knew it to give ASU a 17-0 lead. Arizona State would put another ball through the uprights for a field goal to make it 20-0 before the first quarter was even over.

ASU HB Keegan Herring finds the endzone after making a move to get to the outside.

Just as the first quarter was coming to an end, on the ensuing kick off, OSU WR Chris Johnson caught the ball in the endzone and elected to take it out hoping to make a play. The returner found an opening in the coverage and received some nice blocks and took it all the way to the house for a 103 yard kick return for a touchdown and the Beavers were finally on the scoreboard down 20-7 as the first quarter came to an end.

Arizona State finally seemed to sputter on offense as Carpenter would be picked off by OSU CBs Brandon Hughes and Keenan Lewis in the second quarter but the Oregon State offense was unable to get anything going. The Sundevils would take their commanding 20-7 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

As the second half got underway, OSU WR Sammie Stroughter caught the ball in the endzone off the opening kick off and he also decided to run it out to spark the Beaver offense. Stroughter found an opening and then shrugged off a tackle and he too took it to the house for a 102 yard kick return for a touchdown to give the Beavers hope as they were only down 20-14. On the sideline, there was a very angry Dennis Erickson as he slammed his headset to the ground.

Beaver kick returner Sammie Stroughter shrugs off a tackle and takes it to the house for Oregon State's second kick return for a touchdown of the game.

Despite the two big special teams plays, the Sundevils remained composed going about their business. ASU HB Keegan Herring seemed to be taking over the game, making plays to keep the chains moving. However, the Beaver defense came up with a big stop on a 4th & inches play. Now, the OSU offense just needed to score some points. That is when the Beavers got a bad break as WR Sammie Stroughter went down with an ACL sprain on the punt return. Stoughter would be forced to watch the rest of the game from the sideline. This was a huge blow to an already anemic offense as Stroughter has been the offense the last few games as he has scored eight touchdowns in the last three games.

Despite the injury, Canfield led a nice drive into the red zone where he found his TE Gabe Miller who appeared to be open in the endzone but ASU SS Troy Nolan was baiting Canfield to throw it and stepped in front and picked off the ill advised pass from Canfield. As Canfield came back to the sideline, OSU head coach Mike Riley could only look at the ground and shake his head in disappointment. The Beavers had blown their opportunity to score. ASU would put a field goal on the board in the 4th quarter and the game was nailed shut when Canfield threw his third pick of the game. Arizona State wins 23-14.

Dennis Erickson was visibly upset despite winning an important conference game, "I was really disappointed in our lack of focus on special teams. Yeah we won and a win is a win but we got lucky. Once is bad enough but twice...that's not good. We obviously have a lot of work to do." The Sundevils did not play well on special teams but essentially the defense pitched a shut out.

Mike Riley appeared to be disappointed with his team, "Canfield made a really bad decision down there in the red zone but he wasn't getting a whole lot of help out there. We really showed a lack of heart I thought... unable to get anybody blocked. But those guys we played are a good team. That's for sure." Arizona State put Canfield on his back six times and it was clear that the Sundevils were faster than the Beavers. Next up for the Beavers is UCLA who has only lost one game. It should be another tough game.

                                Oregon State (5-3) at #16 UCLA (7-1)

Pasadena, CA - It is safe to say that Rick Neuheisel has gotten off to a good start in UCLA. The only loss for the Bruins came at Autzen Stadium against the Ducks. No shame in losing a game there. Nobody could have thought that Neuheisel would get things turned around so quickly. He has the Bruins looking for a possible Rose Bowl appearance. They would host the Beavers on a nationally televised game in beautiful Pasadena.

The UCLA offense was running on all cylandars early efficiently moving down the field. Unfortunately their opening drive stalled in the red zone leading to an early field goal to make it 3-0 UCLA. The Oregon State offense was horrid against Arizona State the previous week. It was no different this week for the Beavers as their offense could not get anything going and continually were forced to punt from their own side of the field. On defense, the Beavers were having a tough time stopping a conservative UCLA offense from moving the chains. The Beavers were forced to try a blitz and the Bruins seemed to know it was coming as QB Patrick Cowan threw a screen pass to a wide open HB Kahlil Bell who found a lot of green. OSU CB Keenan Lewis tried to pull him down but failed to find the right angle to make a tackle and Bell was gone for a 76 yard TD reception putting UCLA up 10-0.

Bruin QB Patrick Cowan times the screen pass perfectly to HB Kahlil Bell who takes it 76 yards to the house.

Finally, OSU caught a break when Cowan threw an ill-advised pass off his back foot which was easily picked off by CB Keenan Lewis who took it all the way back for a pick-six to put Oregon State back in the game down 10-7. However, Cowan and the UCLA offense was not phased by the turnover as the Bruins marched right down the field into the red zone behind the legs of Bell. Eventually Cowan found his WR#84 who made a nice diving catch in the endzone to put UCLA ahead 17-7.

UCLA WR#84 makes a diving catch in the endzone.

As the Beavers attempted to run the clock out to end the first half, HB Patrick Fuller caught a simple pass in the flat, hurdled a defender and tried to juke past another two defenders but the Bruins were having no part of that as Fuller was drilled and the ball was separated from him for a fumble which the Bruins quickly recovered. The turnover led to a last second field goal to close out the half 20-7 UCLA.

In the third quarter, the Beavers seemed to find some confidence finally getting into the red zone behind a 13 play drive. OSU QB Sean Canfield threw to the corner of the endzone trying to hook up with WR Sammie Stroughter but the ball was off target and picked off. Beaver head coach Mike Riley was really frustrated crossing his arms and shaking his head at Canfield's decision to throw it up for grabs. It would be the last time the Beavers even sniffed the red zone as their offense was just plain bad. Canfield was sacked eight times as he just seemed to lack confidence and held the ball too long.

The game was essentially over in the fourth quarter but the Bruins kept playing like the game was still in question scoring on a goalline pass in the flat to HB Kahlil Bell who leaped over the Beaver defenders and was upended landing in the endzone to finish off this blowout 30-7 in favor of the Bruins.

UCLA HB Kahlil Bell is upended as he jumps over the defense landing in the endzone.

The Oregon State offense has now gone scoreless for eight quarters. It is safe to say that the offense is in a slump. Mike Riley after the game, "You just can't have your quarterback throw it up for grabs like that at that point in a game. He made a bad decision but hopefully he can learn from his mistakes. We really need to just execute better. We will be going back to the drawing board this week to turn things around. We have to give it to the Bruins. They are a darn good football team." The Beavers will have Cal next at home and will hope to turn that offense around.
