          Roster Changes Before "Trap Game"
After a tough loss at home to Florida, Head Coach Kirby Smart said he was disappointed by his team's performance. Heading into a game against an in-state rival, he was hoping his players weren't going to rest and overlook Western Kentucky.

The Hilltoppers are off to their best start in program history, starting 4-0 and looking ripe to knock off Kentucky. Hosting the Wildcats, who won their only road game, are 2-2 and WKU Head Coach Willie Taggart thinks he can compete with the in-state SEC team. This has become bulletin board material for the Wildcats, who have gone through a rigorous off week of practice. Offensive Coordinator Shannon Dawson has been let down by the play of the offense. He knows that players are still getting used to a new offense, but he expects better play after the next eight games.

A position that needs to improve is the Quarterback position. Patrick Towles has stepped in as the starter and won his first two games. Yet his completion percentage floats just above 40% and Andre Woodson and Shannon Dawson have been harping on him to make "the easy plays." "He is looking down field too often, taking too many risky throws. It will cost him more as we play better defenses. His arm is good enough to make up for some mistakes, but he has to trust the players around him to make plays. It doesn't all have to be big aerial plays." said Andre Woodson, who grew into being the winningest Quarterback in Wildcats history, as well as the career leader in touchdown passes.

The unit protecting Towles has seen some changes, partly due to Darrian Miller's injury. Miller is hoping to be back for the team's home game against Arkansas. In his place, Tyler Davenport has stepped in and played well. Next to Miller (and Davenport) has been an issue and now the team has named a true freshman starter at left guard. Allen West takes over for Zach West, who allowed a team high four sacks including two against Florida. Allen has impressed the staff enough to be jolted into a starting spot.

Another position that has been worrisome is the special teams. Landon Foster has been "average" so far to start the season; but the kicking game has been the real issue. New starting placekicker Joe Mansour, a senior, has made half of his kicks but has missed 3 inside 40 yards. He also missed an extra point, partly due to a mistimed snap. Landon Foster has been named the team's new placekicker. Foster, who played kicker in high school going 11 of 16 on field goals as a senior with a long of 49 yards. Length is Foster's issue, so many expect Joe Mansour to get attempts over 45 yards. Mansour did make a kick of 51 yards this year, but his inconsistency cost him the job.

Heading just over 150 miles to play Western Kentucky on Saturday, the Wildcats have been hammered on the importance of not dropping a game like this. Many call it a "trap game," but the Wildcats seem poised to come out of a tough loss, and rebound with a win.

Smart Shoots Down Using Black Jerseys
The Kentucky Wildcats unveiled a black jersey two seasons ago. Since then, they wore the all-black look for the Mississippi State game in 2011 and 2012 (lost both games), the only two times they have mixed black into the uniform. Before last season, the team announced that there were 18 uniform combinations, nine for home and nine for away. That includes using the white and blue helmets, as well as the white, black and blue jersey and pants.

The team used few of the combinations last year, but this year it was expected that with a change with the coaching staff, there could be different uniform looks. Instead, it has been the opposite. Head Coach Kirby Smart announced that the team will only use two uniforms (a standard home and away) until the team is bowl eligible. He wants the team to earn the black jerseys, something players and fans alike enjoy.

He cites that Alabama rarely changes their jersey and he says it can distract from winning. "The focus right now is on building this program. We won't get on television because we have nice jerseys. If the product on the field is bad, what we are wearing doesn't matter." Some universities like Oregon use their uniform combinations as a point of pride, using it as a recruiting pitch. Kentucky, a Nike school just like Oregon, wants to do the same but first does not want to take away from building the football program.

Some players have taken to twitter about the news that they won't wear black for the Georgia home game and Mississippi State away game as previously announced. The Athletic Department is standing by the decision of the Head Coach and want to win more than anything. Kentucky heads to South Carolina this week, looking for their first SEC win of the season and fourth of the year.

Not exactly happy with both games. The Georgia loss was bad because I basically gave it away. I couldn't do anything on offense in the second half and Georgia marched up and down the field. But losing in overtime is never easy to take. South Carolina is a much better team and I played with them. There were times that they couldn't stop the pass. On the other hand, we couldn't stop the run. In overtime, I thought about going for it on 4th and 2, but I kicked the Field Goal. Looking back, I should have taken a shot.

First Commit In After Two Tough Losses
The Kentucky Wildcats record dipped below .500 after two straight losses. The losses had a lot of similarities being SEC road games and both losses were by seven points. The team now heads home to rest up and host Arkansas, along with some official visits. Two more players from Tennessee plan to visit: three-star linebackers William Burns and Keveon Carter. Both could be part of a class that is heavy on out-of-state talent.

The only good news to come from the loss to Georgia was the team's first commitment to the class of 2014. Bo Matthews, a corner from a small town in the middle of Nashville and Memphis, picked Kentucky over other SEC teams that had recently extended offers. Just last week, Vanderbilt had offered Matthews a scholarship, but UK had Matthews' on their radar for a while. Mississippi State and Florida State showed interest, but both had not offered a scholarship.

A tough-nosed corner who excels in man coverage, he might lack the athleticism to deal with some of the receivers and players in the SEC. But the coaching staff believes he can grow and has room to improve. He plays both ways at Jackson Christian; a private school that is destined for the playoffs on the back of Matthews who has had a big year as the team's leading rusher. The city of Jackson has produced some NFL players including Al Wilson and Jabari Greer. Matthews' goal is to make the NFL.

As Kentucky starts to contend with SEC schools for recruits, they can start to sell prospective players on the success of players like Patrick Towles. A highly recruited in-state player, he was a high three or four-star Quarterback that had lost one high school game in his career. He had offers from big schools but chose Kentucky to be part of the turnaround. Head Coach Kirby Smart believes that program is showing signs of growth, competing and keeping games close in the SEC. If the turnaround is happening, they will have to win more recruiting battles like they did with Matthews or two years ago with Towles. Towles, now with a 3-3 record as a starter, is looking forward to homecoming and a chance to get a win in the SEC this week.
