            Conference Realignment Dominos Fall... Quickly
Heading into next season, the only known change in the college football landscape was Navy joining the Big East. The Big East, after being picked through for years (especially by the ACC) had assembled now a coast-to-coast conference that included a whole batch of new teams. Then came the news that would start the next wave of conference realignment.

Rutgers and Maryland were looking to the B1G Ten to take the conference to 14 members. Within 72 hours of the leaked interest by both programs and the conference, Rutgers announced they would join the B1G Ten for the 2014 season. Maryland followed suit the next day, leaving the ACC and Big East down a member.

In the ACC's known style, they were quick to pick from the Big East. Originally, the news was UConn would join to continue to bolster the Atlantic Coast Conference as the new basketball power conference. Louisville also seemed a viable option, although UConn would make sense with the recent addition of Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the ACC. Instead, the Cardinals were picked to join the ACC replacing Maryland.

Now the Big East was back down to ten members heading into 2014, when they once were at 12, adding a 13th and looking for a 14th. Now, looking to keep their conference championship and divisions - the Big East added Air Force. The Falcons made sense geographically, giving the conference a member school close to Boise State. Also, adding two annual rivals (AF and Navy) made sense as both have agreed to play Army in their non-conference schedule as well.

The Big East did announce a change in divisions. Changing from the Coastal and Continental to the new Big East "Red" and "Blue." In the Red are UConn, Memphis, Navy, SMU, San Diego State and South Florida. In the Blue: Air Force, Boise State, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Houston, and Temple. There are also annual cross-overs between geographical (and otherwise) rivals: Boise State-San Diego State, Cincinnati-UConn, Houston-SMU, Navy-Air Force, Memphis-Temple and the battle of Florida between UCF and USF.

The B1G Ten changes also led to a bit of a change in their divisions and the addition of protected annual rivalries. Both Maryland and Rutgers added to the Leaders Division, with Illinois moving over to join the Legends. As for protected rivals: Michigan and Ohio State will continue their annual battle, while Minnesota and Wisconsin will continue to battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe. Iowa was upset that the division split meant no annual battle for the Heartland Trophy, instead Iowa plays Purdue. Penn State and Michigan renew the Battle for the Land Grant Trophy. Illinois and Indiana share a border and now share an annual game. Rutgers and Nebraska are paired in a game of the two teams that are farthest apart in the conference (separated by 1,300 miles). In the "Sea of Red Game," the two will play annually. Maryland and Northwestern are both Under Armour schools and will play yearly.

The conference realignment dominos fell quickly this time around, with all the pieces falling within a week of the first "official" move. These will all take affect next season, as the landscape of college football is now used to constant change.

              Kentucky
Three Add After Win Over Hogs
A big conference win, the only one Kentucky secured last season, was also the first SEC win for the Wildcats this season. Heading into a game with defeated Vanderbilt, the team saw their recruiting get a little boost. Recruits are starting to take notice of the effort of a new coaching staff. Recruiting Coordinator Tommy Thigpen said the team will focus on three areas in recruiting: In-state, Georgia/Florida, and the team will start to look north (Ohio and Tennessee).

The three players brought in come from each of those regions. The highest ranked player is three-star receiver Ryan Davis. Davis had received a lot of interest from MAC schools, but a strong senior season got the attention of the Wildcats. From a city just outside of Miami University in Ohio, many expected Davis to end up with the Redhawks. But interest from an SEC school made all the difference. A sure-handed player with decent speed, his size and hands could make him a big target in the future.

Clifton Archie comes from Lawrenceville, Georgia as a perfect fit for Kentucky's recently installed 3-4 defense. A nose tackle, he could see time right away because of his size and footwork. He doesn't just fill space, but can also get after the Quarterback. Archie does disappear at time, especially when teams bring in extra blockers. Archie also adds another player from the state of Georgia, the state recruited almost as much as Kentucky. Next year's roster has a chance to have more players from Georgia than Kentucky.

Finally, Matt Sanders is an in-state player who committed as soon as he was offered a scholarship by Kentucky. Originally, his interest was with Indiana, but Sanders grew up a fan of Big Blue and was really waiting on Kentucky before he made his decision. Sanders is a great run blocker that can make blocks in space and will be a solid lead blocker for Kentucky. He will have to improve his pass blocking skills, especially with the new offense. Sanders is a potential state champion wrestler, who plans to wrestle at 280. He coaching staff has asked him to get up to 290 before he is on campus. Sanders was quick to oblige, happy to be a part of Big Blue nation.

Kentucky Accepts Bid to Poinsettia Bowl
No matter how you say it, the Wildcats will be playing for the Poinsettia. In Kirby Smart's first season at the helm, a year that saw a switch to a pass-oriented offense and the 3-4, Kentucky stayed competitive all year and fought to a 6-6 record. Staying competitive in the SEC has been a key to Kentucky's turnaround and they did that; winning three conference games, and two of their losses were by one possession (By 3 in overtime to South Carolina and by 7 to Georgia a week later).

Even with an improved season, Kentucky still did not earn an SEC bowl bid. Instead they accepted an at-large bid to the Poinsettia Bowl. Playing against a Mountain West opponent, the Wildcats drew the Spartans of San Jose State (7-5, 6-3). SJSU will be playing close-to-home at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. The Spartans had a similar up-and-down season, their first in the Mountain West. They lost three straight to start the season (against Stanford, Fresno State, and Colorado State). All tough losses to good teams, they rebounded and won their final three games of the year to get bowl eligible.

The game will air Saturday, December 21st on ESPN2. Kickoff is at 5:00 PM and the Kentucky Wildcats are rumored to be wearing black jerseys. Something the team earned with a bowl birth this season.
