Injuries Start to Pile Up for UK
One of the surprise teams of the college football season thus far is Kentucky. The Wildcats are off to a 3-0 start in which they have outscored their opponents 124-45. The offense is already one of the best in the country, ranked as the top passing attack. Quarterback Patrick Towles is gaining national attention and is becoming a quiet Heisman candidate. Much will depend on his play in SEC play that starts this week. Kentucky heads to Gainesville looking to break their 27 game losing streak to Florida. The longest streak in the nation against common opponents, the Wildcats are heading into their first game against a top 25 opponent. So the game with the Gators could decide a lot for Towles and Kentucky's season.

The only issue the team has dealt with so far are injuries. Health was a worry for the team that still has inexperienced depth, especially along the offensive line. Tyler Davenport's injury two weeks ago will cost him another month of the season. The earliest the team expects him back will be when the team plays Vanderbilt. Replacing Davenport originally was a team effort, with both Steven Taylor and Jake Boynton getting reps. Now, Allen West has moved over and will be the starter indefinitely.

Net to West is no longer Teven Eatmon Nared. Instead, the team has made a switch after TEN's early season struggles. He allowed 4 sacks in the team's first two games and then had two holding calls go against him in the home opener last week against Ohio. Shaquille Love has moved into the starting lineup, starting two games last season when the line was dealing with similar amounts of injuries. Still, the line has held up well but the coaching staff is worrisome about now the lack of depth.

As for the rest of the offense, an injury to A.J. Legree's hand will leave him a cast for at least 4 more weeks. After that, his recovery back into playing will be slow, but the team is hoping to have him for the final three games of the season. In the mean time, Ronnie Shields will see more reps in three and four receiver sets. DeAngelo Yancey, a big target who has seen some playing time on special teams and short yardage passing plays, is penciled in as the starter.

This week is a big test for the Wildcats. Head Coach Kirby Smart is used to winning conference games, but in his second year in Lexington, he is still changing the culture. Although many are calling for a .500 season or above in conference.

How 2014 Became A Historic Season
The Kentucky Wildcats are off to one of their best starts in the program's history. Entering the second year under Kirby Smart, the Wildcats were returning 18 starters and were expected to have a winning season. Yet playing in the SEC, and the Wildcats' history in the conference, they were picked to finish 6th in the East Division. As of right now, they are on top of the SEC East and rising in the polls. Ranked 16th, it is the highest the team has been ranked in the 21st Century.

It started with the upset win over rival Louisville and then two other non-conference wins led the team to a showdown in Gainesville. The Florida Gators had a 27 game win streak over Kentucky and were expected to easily get the 28th. The Wildcats took a 14-7 lead late into the fourth quarter. But the Gators were able to send it to overtime on a momentum shifting drive by Jeff Driskel. It sent the game to overtime, and an unlikely hero emerged for Kentucky.

DeAngelo Yancey, who snagged a redzone touchdown in the fourth to give Kentucky the lead, did it again in overtime. Jubilation broke out on the UK sidelines and Kirby Smart was bathed in Gatorade in The Swamp. From there, Kentucky broke into the AP Top 25 rankings and were set for a home matchup with SEC East favorite, South Carolina.

The Gamecocks were rolling behind the duo of Quarterback Dylan Thompson and running back Brandon Wilds. Wilds was on the Heisman shortlist and the Gamecocks were heavy favorites in Lexington. But South Carolina could not handle the pressure put on by Kentucky's defense. Kentucky held the lead the entire game and held the South Carolina rushing attack to under 200 yards for the first time in 2014.

Since 1992, when South Carolina entered the SEC, Kentucky has never beat both South Carolina and Florida in the same season. Part of that was the 27 straight losses to Florida, but the team has also struggled against SC. Now, a home game with Mississippi State, Kentucky is favored against an SEC West opponent. That is unheard of for UK, who is still getting used to winning at this current clip. "This is part of changing the culture, it is competing every week in the best conference in the country." said Head Coach Kirby Smart. So Kentucky has made history, and now is thinking about their first appearance in the SEC Championship game.
