    Texas State 2012 Season Recap

    SR QB Rutherford pre-injury

    RB Curry

    WR Battle

The Texas State Bobcats had a pretty rough first year in the FBS. Granted, with the injuries they sustained, and the complete switch to a different offensive scheme, any team would struggle. Senior QB Shaun Rutherford was balling out in his first 4 games winning 2 of 3, but broken his collarbone week 5 and was done for the year. Backups Delancellotti and Arndt attempted to have some success of their own, but just could not grasp the triple option. Senior HB Marcus Curry was carrying the load until he also went down with a hamstring injury in week 9/10. Once against his backups vied to keep the success going, but to no avail. The Bobcats finished the year at 3-9 (2-4), but showed promise at full cylinders. And in one of the most surprising events in recent times, that I have seen, Coach Ryan Long had a huge hand in landing a 4 star recruit (EVEN THOUGH ON AUTO PILOT IT RECRUITED THIS INDIVIDUAL LOL). 4 star QB Gabe Leftwich decided he was going to take his talents to Texas St and the triple option. "I am fairly confident he will come right in and take charge of this offense day one on campus and I am extremely excited to start the next season", Coach Long said in a statement. The team also brought in 18 other recruits, mainly on the defensive side, but managed to land a couple run blocking tackles.

                  Texas St 2013 Season Predictions

After the 3-9 season of last year, there is no where to go but up for the Bobcats. However, after spending extended time at summer practices, I must say that these kids looked to have completely turned it around. It seems like they really grasp the new offense/defense now. Freshman QB Gabe Leftwich has taken control of this offense and has impressed everyone that has watched him. A sleeper going into the season, I think, is the JUCO transfer Trevor Chavez. He will be a JR once the season starts and he has taken the full load of FB duties. He also has many packages that he comes in at HB. The kid is a truck, but with the speed of a WR. He can catch, block, run....hell he can do it all. Watch out for Chavez to have a huge year. RBs Gay and Franks will be splitting the carries for the season, but don't be surprised if Gay takes more of those duties. His speed gives him better opportunities on the edges. At WR and TE it's honestly pretty much a wash. There is no consistency with the group and not one person has stood out for me over the summer practices. As far as the offensive side of the ball, I can absolutely see these men winning 6 games this year. At LEAST 6 games. The defense looks solid, so as long as the offense puts up the points they need, look for the Bobcats to be a bit of a surprise in 2013.

Texas St Chews Up and Spits Out FCS MW; 55-7

Freshman QB Gabe Leftwich slides past a defender for a TD

HB Gay scampers for a 55 yard TD (his 2nd of the day)

As much as the fans should be overly excited about this win, they need to just realize that this is FCS MW we are talking about here. Not much competition. However, these boys played a hell of a game. Coach Ryan Long, 2nd year offensive coordinator, had his offense running on all cylinders against this overworked FCS defense. Totalling 574 yards, with 339 of those yards on the ground, there was not much the FCS MW defense could do to stop the Bobcats. Freshman QB Gabe Leftwich was injured in the first quarter (DeLancellotti came in and threw for 2 TDs), but once he returned he was a force to be reckoned with. He was very efficient in the air going 4/5, but on the ground he was dominating with 83 yards and a 34 yard TD run where he hurdled over a DB. HB Gay ran for over 100 yards and 2 scores, while JUCO JR transfer (FB) Chavez ran for 70 yards and a score. The Bobcats defense did not do so bad either, with 6 sacks on the day and a fumble recovery in the endzone. Next week the Texas St Bobcats play a tough opponent in Virginia Tech.

Texas St not ready for Hokies in Blacksburg; Downed 45-17

WR Battle catches a 10 yd out pass and breaks a tackle in route to a 66 yd TD

Freshman HB Smash Williams scores his first TD of his career late in the 4th

Here is the Texas St Bobcats we came to know and, unfortunetaly, love during all of last season. Turnovers, Injuries, Miscues, Blown coverages, etc you name it, it went wrong for the Bobcats. Freshman QB Gabe Leftwich was knocked out of the game on his 3 play with a concussion. HBs Gay and Franks also battled lingering injuries for the majority of the first 3 quarters. QB Delancellotti replaced Leftwich and threw 3 INT's. Coach Long yanked him in favor of 3rd stringer QB Arndt. He went on to have a pretty decent day, despite the stout defence they faced. The run game was completely non existent from the very first play of the game. Arndt and DeLancellotti were sacked a combined 5 times by the Hokies defense and was stopped cold on almost every running play. The 4th quarter we saw nothing but pass plays by Arndt and Co. This was a punishing defeat, but noone should really be surprised. The Hokies are looking to make a run at the ACC title this year and the Bobcats, well, they are still "rebuilding". Week 3 pits the Bobcats against the LSU Tigers. This could get ugly.

Bitter Defeat to LSU leaves Texas St at 1-2; Final 24-13

Gabe Leftwich led his team valiently in loss to LSU

HB Gay scores on a long run in the 1st Quarter

Despite the L in the Loss column, the Texas St Bobcats played lights out and not only kept up with the Tigers, but actually outplayed them for the majority of the game. Not only did their offense outgain LSUs, but they made less turnovers. What killed Texas St was not converting on 3rd down after multiple 50+yard drives. Freshman QB Gabe Leftwich did outstanding in moving the chains, but as I stated he/his teammates just could not get the ball rolling on 3rd down. The Bobcats actually had a 3 point lead going into the 2nd quarter, but LSU's running game was extremely consistent and they were able to eat up a lot of clock time. Once Texas St finally got the ball, they would drive down the field, but more often than not, fizzle out around mid field and have to punt or kick a field goal. The Bobcats one TD came in the 1st quarter with HB Gay broke out on the left side for a 50 yd TD run. The Bobcats played very well and actually should be confident going home to face Wyoming next week.

Incredible 4th Quarter comeback gives Texas St their 2nd win of the season; Final 36-33

FORGOT TO TAKE PICS AGAINST WYOMING

FORGOT TO TAKE PICS AGAINST WYOMING

Wyoming was completely dominating Texas State in the first half. The score was 17-0 going into the 3rd quarter and it seemed like all hope was lost. The offense was flat and the defense was giving up huge plays left and right. Something must have been said that really fired up the team because the Bobcats came out swinging in the 3rd quarter. Wyoming scored on their first possession in the 3rd to go up 24-0, but the Bobcats scored on 2 straight passing drives to make the score a respectable 24-14. Wyoming added another TD just before the 4th to go up 30-14 (2 pt conversion failed). Freshman QB Gabe Leftwich connected with WR Battle on his 3rd passing TD of the day with 4 minutes and 35 seconds remaining in the game to make the score 30-20 (missed FG). Wyoming made it all the way to the 15 yard line, but stalled out and kicked a field goal. 33-20 with 3 minutes and 19 seconds remaining. Gabe Leftwich tossed a couple short passes and a couple of short runs here and there and finally threw a beautiful streak to WR Millburn for a TD with 2:43 left in the game (FG is good). 33-27 now. Wyoming just has to hang onto the ball and continue to spread it out like they have been doing all game. However with 1:02 left in the game and on 3rd and 6, Wyoming QB Brad Smith fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Texas St. With just 55 seconds left, Gabe Leftwich marched his team down to the 3 yd line. With no timeouts he had to hurry up to spot of the last completed pass at the 3 and spike it. 4....3....2....1...SPIKE! Incredibly he was able to stop the clock with 1 second left on the 3 yard line. Leftwich play actioned left and roll right to find a wide open HB Gay in the endzone! Texas St scored 21 points in the 4th quarter to comeback and win it in one of the most dramatic finishes I have ever seen. Gabe Leftiwch completely took charge of the game and established over 400 yds of offense BY HIMSELF. With the excitement surrounding this win, look for the Bobcats to destroy North Texas in week 5.
